I've been looking for way to fill whats left of my spare time and decided to start brewing my own beers. I went out on a whim and picked up a nice big kit (didn't need half the shit) and got started last Friday night. In short, boil the water and ingredients and cool down as fast as possible. Stir in the yeast and put in a air tight 6.5 gallon bucket and put the air lock in. A about month later you've got beer ready to drink. In the last week I've been totally over whelmed with all this information. being the forum whore that I am I joined HomeBreTalk.com and they have been GREAT! There's one catch, EVERYTHING has to be sanitized.....EVERYTHING!!!
I'm hoping this is gonna turn out great. Hearing what others have said it should be just fine.
Here's my thread, if you want a good laugh

Mmmm beer. I've been thinking about trying to brew beer for the past couple years just dont think I have the patience for it. Knowing I have beer brewing that i can't drink for weeks would kill me.
Let us know how it turns out.

Its really very simple to do. All you need is about 50 bucks worth of equipment and 4 hours one night, wait a month and about another 2 hours to bottle.
Patience is the key though. Thankfully the bucket is plastic otherwise I'd be calling into work and sitting infront watching it bubble away.
And no I have not seen the new show brewmasters
that show isnt good. dont waste your time.
I have reached my limit on reality based tv shows.

I hear ya! I would probably consume 8 times my normal beer intake during the time i was forced to wait for the beer to ferment.

Yea, looks pretty nasty, but I bet in a nother week once it all settles, it'll be good.
will you be doing 2 pours or bottling straight from that? my friend had 2 bottle examples, the that was poured 2 times there was a lot less crap on the bottom of the bottle.

I been reading that homebrewing forum for a weeks now and found that people are moving away from secondary containers. All that does is add oxygen to the beer (which is bad) and moves it away from all that wonderfull flavoring stuff you see stuck to the sides. In a couple of weeks I'll move it to a bottling bucket by siphoning it and leaving all that nasty crap in the origional. It will really start to clean up in the next two weeks. IPA's are known to be slightly cloudy anyways.
gotcha, Yeah, there's a IPA made in Wisconsin company called New Glarus. its a mid sized mom/pop brewing company, their bottles have some sediment on the bottom still, pretty cool. (cool knowing its a true home brew style)
sediment is not cool. means you're lazy. And I won't drink it.
you don't drink it from the bottle peelz, you do a smooth pour into a glass :)
Definitely looks like poop...

not really, when you do the smooth poor itts pretty minimal

Last Thurdsay I had a really good, expensive beer that had instruction on it on how to pour it. Pour at a certain degree and leave the last inch of beer in the bottle and toss it.

I have not tasted it yet becaust there is no caranation in it yet. I need to add the priming sugar and bottle it. That will add the fizz and hopefully it taste good. So far every thing leads me to believe that this will taste great. No infections, no cider smell, nothing out of the norm.
Bottled it yesterday and snuck a quick taste. So far so good.

The beers a IPA, so its going to be a little cloudy right from the get go. Its also only a week on in its clarification life. Time is beers best friend when its this young. I really should let it sit for another two weeks or so, but its just to damn tasty. That and I wanna get my drunk on
A little interesting reading on IPAs.
"Double India Pale Ales (abbreviated Double IPAs or DIPAs) are a strong, very hoppy style of pale beer. Also known as Imperial IPAs (or IIPAs), these beers have high amounts of malt and hops. Double IPAs typically have alcohol content above 7% by volume. IBUs are in the very high range (60+). To add to the confusion however, is the fact that American "regular" IPAs (most notably the aforementioned Ballantine IPA of Newark, NJ) long had an ABV of 7.5% and was 70+ IBUs; It was a product that was actually regularly available from the mid 1930's through the 1980s.
There are some brewers that believe the name should be San Diego Pale Ale, since the style most likely started near San Diego, California[22] – specifically a Double IPA brewed in 1994 by Vinnie Cilurzo, then head brewer of Blind Pig Brewing Company of Temecula, California (now brewmaster at Russian River Brewing Company).[23] Cilurzo claims he "accidentally" created the style by adding 50% too much malt to his mash tun. He then "corrected" this mistake by adding 100% more hops. This is up for some debate, however, as the local San Diego Pizza Port brewery claims to have been brewing "the original San Diego IPA",[24] since 1992 when they opened their brewery (two years before Cilurzo and Blind Pig). Still others attribute the creation of this style to Rogue Ales, a microbrewery in Newport, Oregon, and its I2PA beer, brewed in 1990.[1]
Northern California breweries such as Lagunitas and Russian River as well as those in the San Diego area have taken to the Double IPA style (DIPA), including Stone Brewing Company, Green Flash, Oggi's Brewery, Alpine Beer Company, Alesmith, Ballast Point Brewing Company, and Port Brewing Company, etc. The style is extremely common in Oregon, with DIPAs produced by most microbreweries, including Rogue Ales, Deschutes Brewery, Hair of the Dog Brewing Company, Full Sail Brewing Company, Ninkasi Brewing Company, Beer Valley Brewing Co., BridgePort Brewing Company, Laurelwood Brewery. Some DIPAs are now even made in Denmark, Belgium, and Norway.[25][26][27]
Many of the stronger Double IPAs could be alternately classified as American barleywines or Triple IPAs. As a relatively young style, it is still being determined. It is one of the fastest growing styles in the craft beer industry, and a favorite among hopheads. 100% more malt and 200% more hops is the basic (but unofficial) guideline for a Triple IPA versus a normal IPA.
Ah, should have looked back through the thread, thought you were brewing an amber ale. Really been thinking about giving brewing a shot since you started this thread but am a little worried about having 5 gallons of beer I don't like. Wife brought home a growler from one of the local micro breweries/restaurants for my birthday and I really didn't like it. Think it was an APA. I need to start drinking more different types of beer so I can figure out what I really like before I give brewing a shot.

Brewing beer is REALLY REALLY simple! You best bet now is to get a complete kit from Brewer Best. They have tons of different kinds of beers to choose form. I got a kit from a local home brew store and really all you need is a 6.5 gallon air tight bucket with a drill grommet to accept a "air lock". Follow the instructions per the brewers best kit, and drop it in the bucket and let it sit for a month. Bottle it, cap it, wait a week or two and your ready to drink. REALLY REALLY simple! I'd be more than happy to guide you along the way.
This kit is more than enough to get you going on some Ales. http://www.midwestsupplies.com/brewing-basics-equipment-kit.html
I'd love to get some "brewing buddys" going and share a few beers that we've brewed up. I've got one buddy almost convinced to get a batch going. Brewing 5 gallons at a time (~55) bottles gets to be a bit tireing. I'd like to brew up 5 gallons and swap halt the batch with someone else and get some comments so I can get an idea of how my brewing is. Right no I may have a case us "my beautify baby" going, but who knows.

So after getting a set up going about how much does it cost per batch? and normally how many bottles comes out of a batch?

After the setup costs its pretty damn cheap! You can buy beer kits from 15 bucks to over 100 bucks. A typical Pale Ale or a Blue Moon clone would cost around 25-30 dollars. IPA's cost more due to the quantity of hops.
Most kits will make you 5-6 gallons which turns out to be about 60 12oz bottles. If you do that math thats about 50 cents a bottle and 3 bucks a 6pack. Most 6 packs I buy will range from 7-15 dollars. And yes, I'm trying to justify the start up costs
Once you do your first batch you'll be hooked.
I should have my kegging system up and running tomorrow night, and be drinking my own draft beers by the weekend.

Finally bought my starter kit and IPA ingredients, should be here in a couple of weeks. I will be ready to start cooking by the end of the month!
Please, if you guys are thinking/doing your first kits call me and I'll really set some fears to rest. It sounds SUPER complicated, but it really is simple. Any tips other than sanitizing, careful with temps and patiece to let it mature? I can still cancel this kit if you think it's not so good.
That kit will get you buy, but as time goes on you'll want to upgrade some things. I'm at work now and cant view any homebrew sites. When I get home I'll link you to some kits that are alot better for not much more money.

Thanks Shawn, guess I'm pretty good with the one I bought I think, maybe just get a Better Bottle 5 gallon plastic carboy as a secondary with stopper and airlock as I have to mind weight and not volume with the company I ship my stuff with. Aside from that I'm guessing I would need the autosiphon with about 6ft of food grade vinyl hose to be able to move to secondary and to bottle right?
With beers I like them pretty strong, tried an OPA wheat beer in Brazil that was absolutely amazing, love stouts as well so pretty well bodied beers more likely. Was looking over at IPA from Brewer's Best, Austin and Cooper's. Try any of these?

You should be good to go with that kit. With a brew pot you going to want something that around 4 gallons. You usually brew about 2.5 gallons and when finished you add that to the secondary and add water to hit your origional gravity which is usually around 5-5.5 gallons.

When you buy a kit it should come with a siphon, so you shold be good to go.
If you like a stonger beer I would suggest going to the store and grabbing a 6'er of IPA, a Stout, and a Pale Ale and see what you like. I'm a REALLY REALLY big fan of Ranger IPA. Just up on AutinsHomeBrew and grab a clone kit of the commercial beer you like and go from there.
If I were to head to a buddys house for some beers and I had to buy something to take along I always buy Siera Nevada Pale Ale. That is my go to beer. VERY drinkable and pretty strong too bootl
I got my kegging setup going.

I like this design better...

for some strange reason, your original design does not interest me anywhere near as much as the one colorado found...........
I used your thread to inspire a buddy of mine to get started brewing his own... we will see how he does
sweet! let me know if you have any questions.

Well, now that you mention it, I do have a couple.
1/ how does the theory of relativity exlain our place in the universe?
&
2/ How do I get the barmaid at my local to sleep with me?

3. Will the plane take off?
Will a car traveling at the speed of light be able to see the beam from its headlights?
there's theories that the speed of light can be broken.
If I'm traveling at the speed of sound, and I call Krandall a punk will he hear me?
I'll hear a sonic boom.
But you'll still see my middle fingers from the cockpit :bird:
I'd just see a blur more than likely. Not enough time for my eyes to focus.
quit being so literal.
The only way you can see your headlights is if you turned them on prior to reaching the speed of light. Then the light would constantly be in front of you at the distance it originally traveled prior to you reaching the speed of light. Think of it like you are driving and there is someone driving in front of you. If both of you are driving at 35 MPH exactly and in a straight line you will never catch one another, but you will also never separate any further. Always traveling at the same distance and speed until something changes (speed or direction).
It is now considered possible to reach the speed of light, not proven. The CERN collider has particles traveling at 99% the speed of light, their mass increased substantially, but it was not unbearable for the system. To push the objects to 100% would require so much energy (because their weight is about Randy's Mom's after Turkey Day :nana: ) that it is considered too much of a challenge at this time.
*noted. turn lights on before hitting warp drive button.
bet one of those collider things blows up the earth one day.
I emailed CERN about adding the flux capacitor to their collider. They must be really busy because I haven't heard back yet.
they're too busy trying to get their moms and dads back together at the dance in 1955.

Someone Finally found a way to make a Delorean cool.
The car was only average conceptually, built very badly, highly unreliable,
& was a piece of shit to drive from most accounts I have read

FYI, from brew day to when you pop the first beer its going to be a month. Month and a half is much better.
IPA's are my favorite! I'm drinking a Boulevard Single Wide IPA as I type. Last weekend I brewed a Ranger IPA.
Hey Shawn, finally had the time yesterday to mix the wort and left it fermenting about 12 hours ago. Temps are a bit low so will move it to where my water heater is so it'll be a bit warmer. Only 2 things that worry me are:
- On the IPA recipe from coopers it said to mix the LME hopped can with 300g of Dextrose and 500g of Light DME, no problem with the LME and the dextrose mixing but the damn DME clumped up awefully! had to fish the clumps out with my spoon, set them up on a sanitized bowl and threw some boiling water over it and got it pretty much diluted there... not happy with that, will mix in slower next time and make sure my water is still hot hot hot! this I think is what caused the second thing thing that worries me:
- The OG was only 1031!!! WTF!!! this beer will have like 3.5% alcohol content, my wife will probably like it. I had already thrown my sanitized spoon and water in the sink so I did not want to re sanitize and throw more dextrose in there to bump up the alcohol. Is it ok to open the fermenter and throw maybe 150g more of dextrose in there without mixing so as not to aereate?

I wouldnt worry about the clumps, they'll all get eaten up in the Primary. Also keep in mind when your boiling you dont have to be 100% sanitary. Your dealing with boiling water and that will kill off any germs that might arise.
As far as the OG, that kinda has me stumped. I've never done a Coopers beer kit, but dealing with other types of kits I'm guessing somewhere along the line too much water was added. Thus giving you the 1031 OG. Did the kit produce more beer than stated? If your beer is sitting in primary you can not add more sugar. That has to go in during the boil. You can add enough sugar during the boil to bring the ABV up 1%, but anything after that and you'll start to taste it.
I'm not a huge fan of the coopers kits. If I were you Id stick with something like this for your next batch.

I followed the instructions as per Coopers: pour 2liters of boiling water in fermenter, add dry sugars (500g of dry malt extract and 300g of dextrose) and dissolve, then add IPA hopped liquid malt extract (1.7kg), mix thoroughly, add water to 23L mark, pour yeast on top and close. I think my OG reading was off because I forgot to fill the test tube amd discard and then refill again to float hydrometer, this must have thrown the reading off right?

Well first IPA batch is bottled up and carbonating since 2 days ago, it was on the fermenter for 2 weeks, will have 11 days by Christmas so will probably sneak a taste then, will try it again by new year's. Don't really have high hopes for it since it'll be a bit on the low alcohol side. Tried a little before bottling and seemed a little watery and pretty hoppy, we'll see what bottle conditioning does to it. My second brew is in the fermenter since yesterday. I'm doing a Canadian blonde ale kit with 0.6kg of dextrose, 0.4kg of Malto-dextrin, and 640g of honey. Should be pretty good for the wife. Will let you know how the IPA does Shawn. Prost!
awesome, I wish I had extra room to brew my own right now. It's on the agenda though. :)

I know a couple of Canadian Blondes that I wouldn't mind "doing"
You should go ahead and do it Randy, doesn't really take that much time to do and it is pretty rewardimg
