Title: WTF guys?? Help me out
Post by: pj4553 on June 20, 2008, 08:08:26 PM
Here's the story.. A few weeks ago my quad wouldn't start. Ok so I did a bit of trouble shooting and it wound up being a fouled plug. Pretty common right? I've ridden a few times since then with no problems what so ever she ran great. Today I rode with my buddies for a few hours and after a couple hours my Raptor started running like complete shit. It was missing, sputtering, and wouldn't idle but just kill if I let off the gas. I had to get towed in. I figured I'm running rich and fouled another plug. Well I get home and start it the bike ran great  ??? Has this happened to anyone else? I'm scared to go riding because sometimes we go long distances and I don't want to get stranded in the middle of the Lacombe bayou at night  :'(

It's an 07. I had Jerry from Holeshot Designs pre-map my PC3 for my duals and intake. I never even loaded the software on my computer b/c I really have no idea how to custom tune or set a map.

Is the radiatior fan working?
Title: Re: WTF guys?? Help me out
Post by: pj4553 on June 21, 2008, 03:29:37 PM
I think so.. Do you think it was overheating? It did start acting up after some slow crawling over obsticles that required high revs.
Title: Re: WTF guys?? Help me out

I was thinking a vapor lock issue since it seemed to run ok after it cooled down.
Is your gas tank vent tube clear & free of obstruction ?

I checked my fan my throwing a tarp over my quad & let it idle until I heard the fan kick in.  If the fan isn't working then the gas could be heating up inside the tank & be way too warm possibly causing issues with vapor lock.  The warm gas might  be flashing off gases from the additives & whatever else they put in gas these days.  The 3 balls in your gas cap act as your vent valve, next time the quad is hot & won't run listen while removing the gas cap, it shouldn't sound like air escaping the gas tank, a "whoosh" noise.   If you hear a whoosh noise remove 1 of the 3 balls in your gas cap & try that after verifying that the gas tank vent hose is clear & open.  All this may seem strange but the early 06's had faulty fuel pumps & had issues in different areas.  I may be way off here but I gave it a shot, let me know what you find  ???

A tip I read in Quad Magazine - cut all vent hose ends at a 45 degree angle as its much harder for them to plug.  Examples, gas tank vent hose, radiator fan vent hose, coolant overflow hose,  sometimes spiders & bug can plug a hose

Cool man I'll check that out. I noticed a hissing sound coming from somewhere after I shut it off today. It sounded like a tire leaking. Maybe it was gas vapors? ???

I'm trying to remember a good way to test your fan?
I've read about several methods & there was a small amount of controversy with each method......due to the machines electronics  ???

Be sure to check all fan connections/fuses also

Well I rode a bit today. It never died on me and idled fine but at constant speed at low rpm's it felt jerky and would miss . The fans never came on but I didn't ride hard or for a long period of time. I'm going to go out in a bit and check my plug, connections, etc..

Connections seem good. Here's my plug after about 5 hrs of riding. Does this look ok

Cool man. +1 karma. I'm rich. I have no idea how to lean it up a bit. Sometimes I really hate having EFI. If anyone can get me started on using my PC3, reading maps and getting maps to and from the module to my computer I'll be glad to thank you too!

I did it the hard way, I read most of the FAQ's with the PCIII software & adjusted my map from 4500 to redline.  My adjustments were headed in the right direction but a dyno smoothed out my tune for me & I haven't thought about PCIII software since.

Ok I found a map similar to what mods I'm running just a different intake. So all I do is open the map with my PC3 plugged in and hit SEND MAP  and thats my new fuel map?

Ok. I got my current file. In the notes section it says stock 2006 Raptor 700r. OK? So now I'm trying to pull up the map for the monsters and my current map stays on the page and the new one does not come up. What do I do? ???
Title: Re: WTF guys?? Help me out

are you opening the monsters map via the "open map file" button???
Title: Re: WTF guys?? Help me out
Post by: pj4553 on June 23, 2008, 06:17:32 PM
Ok I think I got it. I just closed the pages and opened the new file from Krandall's page. Then I hooked up my PC3 to my computer, fired it up and hit SEND MAP. It said map was recieved. Now, when I first hopped on it, my quad stumbled a bit when I touched the throttle then it ran fine. Was that a normal part of the learning process? Also, the map was for Monsters, and Trinity intake. I have a Monsterflow intake. No biggie right?

nope, not much difference in the intake.

also did you let the bike warm up before you hit the throttle?  I always restart the bike after I load a map and let warm up for 3-5 minutes

Not really. I did the whole deed while it was running. I waited only about 30 sec then I hit the throttle a couple times and got a little stumble. I got on the quad, backed it out while it stumbled a couple more times and then it was fine.

It seemed to be ok. It feels like it pulls like a fuggin freight train. I couldn't keep the front wheels down. Also, the new plug seems to be turning a better color than coal black. I'll ride this weekend. At least if I start having issues again I'll know it's not the map.

as long as its not bogging or poopping or anything you should be fine. if anything does happen i would try another map first then dive into it.

That spark plug wasn't looking pretty so maybe a new plug & map was just what the doctor ordered  :)

Thanks for your insight guys. I live in southern Louisiana which is pretty far from most of ya'll. All my buddies ride carbed quads and the ATV shops around here said they wouldn't touch an EFI quad so all I have to go on is this site for help and info.

Heavy pressure washing can mess with your TPS.  If its a connection issue you could try plugging & unplugging the TPS connections about 5 times & see if that helps, use some dieleltric grease when plugging in too.

Its weird. I unhooked my PC3 and tried to start it and it still wouldn't stay running. it ran a bit smoother but once you let off the throttle it dies.

Octane is fine.  I agree with Bert, your TPS needs recalbrating.  PM Kenny from KDS (Sponsor)  He'll be able to help you calibrate it.

I'm gonna call the TPS......Sometimes they just die on these things. Go ahead and break out the multi-meter and test it. You can use the laptop as well. Just turn the key on and start moving the throttle while watching the tps value. If it changes in a linear fashion, we'll move to something else. If behaves in an erratic fashion(voltage or % jumping all over), we found it 8)

Ok heres what happened. I first started it up and the throttle value was at 17-19% while it was barely running. Gave it a few revs and it hung steady at 21-22%. Then it shut off. I restarted it and it was running good at 7-8%  ??? then of course it started running shitty and killed.

I've never tested my TPS so I can't help you there...
All I've ever done is reset my TPS in my PCIII software

Do you have the Service Manual & a multi-meter to check the TPS voltage?
If you adjust your TPS I believe you'll have to  calibrate the TPS position in the PCIII software after adjusting TPS.   I wish I knew for sure instead of guessing.... ???

Go ahead and check that sucker while the engine isn't running to be sure, but I think we have the answer. The bad news is that I am out of used TPS sensors, so you'll have to hit up the dealer.  :(

I really don't want to sound like a dumbass or anything but how should I check the tps sensor with the meter? Also I'm under warranty. Shouldn't my dealer replace this for free? Lastly, when I get the new one do I need to re-program it?

I had a 3 wheeler with a clogged nipple where the breather hose connects to the cap, and when the engine got up to tempature it would build pressure and bogg it out and stall. It would hiss untill I unscrewed the cap and then it'd run fine. I'd also try 87 octane jsut to see..

Yea the dealer should install a new TPS, they can trouble shoot & test it for you as well
assuming a PCIII doesn't void your warranty  ???   Be sure to check/reset your throttle position on your PCIII after the dealer installs a new one

With a new TPS the PCIII should be calibrated to read the same throttle position so they can work efficiently & in unison. It may not need to be done but ceretainly worth checking out.  To reset the PCIII you'll need to hook up to the PCIII & bring up the software.

It's been a while but I think you'll want the machine off & reset so the PCIII reads 0%
I wish I could remember for sure.  I had to borrow a laptop to check mine & never installed the software on my desktop.  It didn't take me too long to figure that out & I'm not a computer/software guy, you'll be fine.  Any questions about it?  Post up, we'll find someone who knows how to do it...

IM A NEWB SO DONT LAUGH BUT WHAT IS A MAP? My guess would be something to do with aftermarket chips and they way they are tuned as far as air / fuel mixture.... :nana:

Yes a "map" is the file loaded into a PC3 fuel injection control module.

Just found out my dealer keeps them in stock because he gets them so often  It's covered under warranty so they will replace it for me. I guess I just gotta figure out if its calibrated correctly on the pciii.

Anyways, thanks a whole lot for all the help. I learned a lot from this thread

Man, you all made me start an account over here to help a brotha out!  Hey PJ, once you get your bike back from the dealership, go here   http://www.powercommander.com/powercommander_iii_usb/powercommander_general_downloads.aspx

And click on tutorial #10.  It'll show you step by step how to reset the TPS!        Yeah, and I'll take a bud light :P

We lure you smart guys in by being stupid

I figured it would be a while before I saw it again bc when I was leaving I heard the guy say "hey james.. Another one for the graveyard"

Dang. If its close I'd pop in and ask some questions  ???

You would think they've had time enough to diagnose & order parts

What happened was the TPS crapped out. It was flooding the bike. So I called and let them know that I was dropping it off in a couple days and they said no problem. They also told me I wasn't the only one with bad TPS on a rappy so they kept them in stock(lie#1). I drop it off and they said they didnt have one but, ordered me one(lie#2). No big deal. I call them up 2 weeks later looking for my bike. the part never came in because someone forgot to order it(lie#3). After talking with a few of the mechanics I find out the part did come in but they lost it and forgot all about it. I made them over night a new one and fix it the next day.

The bike runs fine now. I took it for my first trip to the dunes and I must say.. FERK MX and trails the dunes is where its at!!! I had a blast!! We raced all day and I am very impressed with the rappy. Two of my buddies ride yfz's and both of them had paddle tires while I was on my stockers. They would jump in front of me at the start but I would pass them every time and I'll admit they are better riders than me. They both wanted to try the rappy and were very impressed that you could do a 3rd gear launch and rip up a hill. I also raced a 450R and beat him pretty good and raced a few banshees but fell victim to them .

There were a lot of people out there so we raced and tore up the dunes most of the night before retreating to the camp site to polish off a few beers and reminisce about the day.
