Cowards die many times before their deaths The valiant never taste of death but once

Hefe

there seems to be more and more controversy with people drag racing at the dunes these days
just not safe
that place is pretty small
someone will die because of it
the DNR has been trying to stop it for years

Krandall

I don't get it.. It's gonna happen... no matter what they do.

so maybe they need to embrace it vs fight it.

It's the DNR Randy...They will err on the side of caution and eventually close it completely vice investing in attempting to regulate it.  Cost and safety win out in political decisions in my expierence.

Krandall

well.. there's no way they could close the dunes. Unless they are comfortable with losing TONS of money (ie permits) and also if that happend, they'd shut down an entire city.

It wouldn't shock me....I got the greatest Sand dunes in N. America wasting away 2 hours from me....

Krandall

was it ever open to quads?

I just don't see how they could ever honestly close that state park. It brings in so much money for Michigan.

No, it's a national Park.  But same deal, the town has nothing, literally millions of dollars awaiting them should even a section of that park to open for ATVs

Hefe

the most valid argument for that would be the danger
and add to the fact that there is an ACTUAL dragstrip right down the street
one with lights and all that jazz

quite honestly.. as fun as drag racing is at SL, it is extremely unsafe and epically stupid
I noticed at LS how much safer it is...
the place is so much larger, and the "strip" area is located off to 1 side
therefore no one cuts across to get somewhere else

it really is a just a death waiting to happen at silver lake

Michigan is ran by some of the biggest idiots in the nation
I could go on for days on how the new anti-smoking-in-bars law is going to hurt the local economy for days
but don't think for a second that wouldn't shut that state park down in a second
regardless of the economic impact on hart and mears

all it will take is for the right person to die there

yep, nearly wrapped barker's Raptor around a Polaris Ranger. :help:
Krandall: "peelz. I'll be real with you. As much as I hate on you for soccer, I really don't mind it"

Krandall

you can't comment peelz. when you were there the main strip was flooded w/ water.

Hefe, are you crazy? Where we were tucked in back by the lake, I can see why you say that , because it's sort of enclosed by little hills and if you came over a hill, you'd run straight into the strip we were using. the main one though. It's almost completely open. When I was there in.... 07 ??? I think it was. first time there. the main strip was open and all dry.  people lined up on both sides watching. there's no way anyone could cross in front of you w/ out seeing everyone unless they were driving with their eyes closed.

umm. yes I can. I rode barkers bike for a few runs. THe last one I did, somebody came down that hill full blast from the right. I am sure it can be better though.

Krandall

When you were there the main strip wasn't open is what I'm saying. to see it when it's 100% open, it'd be nearly impossible for someone to not see people racing. The small bit of racing we did, that location was bad.

ok.. I made a cheezy drawing to illustrate my point

regardless of what "strip" you use, you are asking for someone to enter your path
and they usually do (like peels said)
when you have a huge head of steam built up

as you can see, the shutdown area is EXTREMELY unsafe from many directions

and even though LS was MUCH better suited for that, it still has a slight air of danger
but what doesn't when you are on a quad (even a slow 450)

is there another strip you are talking about?
in my 100 or so times I have been there, these are the 2 main places
