SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving early Wednesday morning.

An officer with a law enforcement task force that targets drunken driving saw the former NBA star run a stop sign around 1:30 a.m., said Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler.

Barkley declined to submit to a breath test but was given a blood test. The results weren't immediately available.

After Barkley was processed, he was cited and released. He left in a cab, Shuhandler said.

Shuhandler said there was nothing remarkable about Barkley's arrest and that it is customary to release people after they've been arrested on suspicion of DUI.

"There was nothing unusual about how he was taken into custody," Shuhandler said. "He was treated exactly like we treat anybody else."

Barkley was arrested in Scottsdale's Old Town area, one of the trendiest spots in the Phoenix metro area.

Barkley played 16 NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, and played on the USA Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992 and 1996. He was an 11-time NBA All-Star and league MVP in 1993.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - A man in Hot Springs faces charges for using a golf cart to crash through a storefront to steal several cases of beer.

Police arrested 24-year-old Alejandro Cortez-Sanchez of Florence, Kentucky, after he allegedly crashed into the El Alamo Store on Central Avenue on Christmas Day. A police report says officers responded to a burglary call and found the store's front doors broken in.

The officers spotted a suspect motoring away in a golf cart and gave chase. The suspect began throwing beer bottles at the police cruisers as they followed for several blocks. Cortez-Sanchez stopped when he reached the 100 block of Golf Links Road, where he was arrested.

Several cases of beer were recovered from the cart and returned to the store owner.

Cortez-Sanchez is still being held in the Garland County Jail on $8,000 bond. He has a January 20th court appearance scheduled. He faces felony counts of theft and commercial burglary, both punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and a misdemeanor count of fleeing.

Remember the ALAMO!

LONDON (AFP) – There's a gnawing problem in the countryside -- a giant beaver on the loose, wreaking havoc in southwest England.

And his owner reckons there's only one thing that can lure the lovelorn rodent back into captivity: the scent of female beaver.

The six-stone (84-pound, 38-kilogramme) animal escaped from the Upcott Grange Farm in the county of Devon back in October, along with two females who were recovered soon after from a nearby lake.

But the one beaver still on the run is thought to be the culprit felling trees some 20 miles (32 kilometres) down the River Tamar at Gunnislake.

Conservationist Derek Gow, who owns 24 of the animals under licence, reckons the runaway is hunting for female beaver. He is planning to catch the escapee using honey traps: boxes that smell of females.

"I know where he is, but he's occupying a territory of probably a kilometre in length," Gow said.

"We've got traps being made up at the moment.

"Using the scent from one of the female beavers, we'll be able to catch the male beaver fairly quickly."

The furry escapee and his trail of destruction were widely covered in Wednesday's national newspapers.

Gow suspects the electric fence surrounding his beaver pen failed during a flood.

"We've checked the fence, we can't find any holes at all. We can't think of any other way they might have got out."

Beavers were hunted to extinction in Britain in the 16th century.

However, in a controversial project, four families of beavers have been shipped in from Norway and will be released in western Scotland early next year.

NASSAU (Reuters) - The teenage son of actor John Travolta died suddenly on Friday during a family vacation in the Bahamas, according to the family's lawyer.

Jett Travolta, 16, suffered a seizure at his family's vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island, attorney Michael Ossi said.

Attempts were made to revive him, but he died at the scene, Ossi said.

Jett, who had a history of seizures, was the eldest child of Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston. They also have a daughter, Ella Blue, who was born in 2000.

How tragic!

Travolta's 707 (N707JT) was named after his son and daughter. The aircraft is named Jett Clipper Ella.

Franken finally won... This has been going back and forth since the election. How crazy is it that an election can come within a few hundred votes. ::)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090105/ap_on_el_se/minnesota_senate

MINNEAPOLIS – The state Canvassing Board was poised to certify the results of the recount in Minnesota's grueling Senate election in Al Franken's favor — but that doesn't mean the race is definitely over.

The board was to meet Monday and was expected to declare which candidate received the most overall votes from nearly 3 million ballots cast. The latest numbers showed Franken, a Democrat, with a 225-vote lead over Republican Sen. Norm Coleman, who led Franken on election night.

But after the announcement, there will be a seven-day waiting period before an election certificate is completed. If any lawsuits are filed during that waiting period, certification is conditional until the issue is settled in court.

Lawyers for both campaigns have laid the groundwork for lawsuits through public comments and legal maneuvering. In recent weeks, as Franken clung to a small lead, Coleman's lawyers promised a lawsuit over their claim that some ballots duplicated on election night wound up being counted twice in the recount.

The Coleman campaign also has a petition pending before the state Supreme Court to include 650 ballots that it says were improperly rejected but not forwarded by local officials to St. Paul for counting.

The court has not said when it would rule in that case.

New York Sen. Charles Schumer, who until recently was the head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said Sunday that Franken had won the election.

"While there are still possible legal issues that will run their course, there is no longer any doubt who will be the next Senator from Minnesota," Schumer said. "With the Senate set to begin meeting on Tuesday to address the important issues facing the nation, it is crucial that Minnesota's seat not remain empty, and I hope this process will resolve itself as soon as possible."

Sen. John Cornyn, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, called Schumer's comments premature and troubling, since Schumer is the new chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, which has jurisdiction over contested elections.

"Senator Schumer will likely play a key role in determining who ultimately assumes this Senate seat," Cornyn said. "Pre-judging the outcome while litigation is still pending calls into question his ability to impartially preside over this matter when it comes before the Committee, as it most certainly will."

Coleman's term as senator officially expired Saturday.

Senate Republican leaders have said the chamber shouldn't seat Franken until all legal matters are settled, even if that drags on for months.

Franken campaign spokesman Andy Barr said in an e-mail Sunday: "In terms of future planning, we're taking it one step at a time. The next step is the canvass board's meeting tomorrow, where we have every expectation they will declare that Al won the election."
