Fraken was in a movie I watched a few days ago.

He was a baggage handler on a train in the movie Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd.

WTF!  Talk about a 180!

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/S/SENATE_BURRIS?SITE=MITRA&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

WASHINGTON – Changing course, Senate Democrats emerged from a meeting with Senate appointee Roland Burris on Wednesday and set forth the legal steps under which they're willing to welcome him into the Senate in President-elect Barack Obama's vacated spot.

Praising the former state attorney general, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the Senate is awaiting a court ruling in a case that tests whether the Illinois secretary of state is required to sign Burris' certification. Senate leaders say that signature is required to seat Burris; Reid suggested that securing it would be a step toward seating him.

"We don't have a problem with him as an individual," Reid said at a news conference in which he dramatically softened his party's opposition to seating any appointee of embattled Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Federal prosecutors arrested the governor last month and accused him of trying to sell Obama's Senate seat.

Knowledgeable Senate officials said the visual embrace of Burris was meant to show acceptance of his personal and professional qualifications, reflecting the belief of Senate Democrats and Republicans that Burris will eventually be seated.

New support for admitting Burris from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., on Tuesday night lent some urgency to the matter, these officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

"There's going to come a time when the entire Senate is going to have to act on this," Reid said. "And that day, I hope, would come sooner rather than later."

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, who also met with Burris, said he hoped the legal matters would be resolved "so we can fill all the vacancies and have a full complement of the Senate."

Like Reid, Obama has opposed the seating of any Blagojevich appointee. But shortly before the Reid-Durbin news conference, Obama told reporters the case "is a Senate matter."

"But I know Roland Burris," Obama added. "He's from my home state. I think he's a fine public servant."

The pleasantries were a far cry from the he-can't-be-seated rhetoric that came from the Senate Democratic caucus a week ago when the governor shocked the party and nominated Burris, who would be the Senate's only black member now that Obama has departed.

The meeting itself, with cameras invited to photograph Burris seated between Durbin and Reid at the Senate's power center, was an abrupt reversal from a day earlier when Democratic leaders would not allow him to speak to reporters inside the Capitol. Instead, they made arrangements for Burris and his lawyers to hold a news conference outside, in the pouring rain.

The softening comes after black lawmakers lobbied for his seating and Feinstein said Burris should be allowed to join the Senate. Another political element in the equation: Obama is trying to focus Congress on his nearly trillion-dollar economic recover plan and may not welcome the distraction of a Burris showdown.

Neither Durbin nor Reid guaranteed Burris would be seated but the majority leader said there almost certainly would be a full Senate vote on it.
