for a first car, or HS student I think they are a decent choice for the $$.  I'm not into the "tuner" scene, but I know there are some parts available to make them go

:grin_nod: Exactly why I want one. They are under 20k used, and they can keep up with the 30k+ tuners.

The SRT4 Neon was not exactly an affordable car, at $24,000 there were many other alternatives available. Insurance was a little pricey for consumers wanting the flashier, better performing Neon. When compared to other subcompact performance cars in it's class, it rates well. I think The Subaru Impreza is a tad quicker, mainly due to the AWD available.

I was going for used prices, but yea the neon was up there. Other alternatives? At the time the only ones that compared to the Srt4 or the Impreza wrx/sti and the Evo. All three had turbo'd 4 cylinder engines and were all about 6k or more higher then the srt 4. With both cars having awd, they do produce off the line better times, but I think I have read the that the 0-60 for the srt 4 was faster? Not sure about that.

I know its not the best car, but it does pack a punch for only 24k.

I suggest for you and every other person who has raced one to race from a roll. Its a night and day difference for the srt 4s. If the driver of the car doesn't know that, they shouldn't be in one.

Actually, I think it would be worse then.  I've already got damn near 10k pounds rollin' and all I gotta do is spool up that turbo and... bye.  And yeah, if you don't wanna look gay, get in a diesel truck

Dead stop here also.  As far as traction I don't fare so well if I want to really get in it from a stop in two wheel drive.  So if I really want to mess with them I will slap it into 4 wheel drive and spool up  8)

It's not called drag racing if you don't do it from a dead stop.

when you race them, are you guys going from a roll or a dead stop?

Usually a dead stop at a light.  I'm old, but I've got great reaction time.  Either way they get owned.   :grin_nod:

I suggest for you and every other person who has raced one to race from a roll. Its a night and day difference for the srt 4s. If the driver of the car doesn't know that, they shouldn't be in one.

Actually, I think it would be worse then.  I've already got damn near 10k pounds rollin' and all I gotta do is spool up that turbo and... bye.  And yeah, if you don't wanna look gay, get in a diesel truck

It's only better if they aren't very good behind the wheel.

Well it 80% of Srt-4 owners, they have never taken the time to learn how to launch the core properly. I know there is a way to launch it just right that wont give you shit as far as traction.

Be glad you didn't get one since they don't make the Neon any longer. Values plummet when they drop a model.

Dead stop or roll, tuners still lose. Raced a modded mustang one time with gauges on the pillar. The road went down to one lane and i ripped him a new one. He was so pissed, he went flying around me on a double yellow when i slowed down to near the speed limit.

Ok Brian got a question for you.  I am going to a bigger tire (35x12.50x17) and I was told to bring my truck in to have them change the pinion factor.  I am assuming that it will change the speedo and possibly shift points, am I any where close?  Thanks

Michael
Title: Re: What do you think about SRT-s? (the car)
Post by: disco on May 24, 2008, 04:51:30 AM
If they don't change the ring/pinion then your speedo will read slow.  And it will be a turd.  I don't see how shift points will be affected.  What gears do you have now?  It would be like taking off in second gear all the time if you didn't regear.

The formula is   Tire Diameter (inches) x RPM  /  336 x Gear Ratio (transmission) x Gear Ratio (Ring & Pinion ratio)

For example,

30 inch tire x 3000 RPM ( = 90000)
336 x 1.00 (third gear my truck) x 3.54 (my axle ratio) ( = 1189.44)

90000 / 1189.44 = 75.67 mph

Throw on taller tires only:

35 x 2571 RPM = ~90000
336 x 1.00 x 3.54 = 1189.44
Still going about 75 but your speedo will read 65.  You are turning less RPMs so your speed will read low.

In this case, 4.10 or 4.11 gears would be closest to what you want.

With a non-lockup automatic you are supposed to add 10% or something RPMs to allow for torque converter slippage but let's keep it simple.

I'm making this more difficult than it is but look at it and play with the numbers and you'll see it.

Ok Brian got a question for you.  I am going to a bigger tire (35x12.50x17) and I was told to bring my truck in to have them change the pinion factor.  I am assuming that it will change the speedo and possibly shift points, am I any where close?  Thanks

Michael

Correct.

Disco pretty much hit it on the head.

I saw a Neon SRT out last night after dinner. He was revving his shit up at the stop light trying to antagonize me (sounding like a pissed off mosquito)....I punched the throttle and let the dual mode exhaust roar open at 3500 rpms, and the light turned green. He backed off....Oh wait, no that was me pulling him by four car lengths.

Yeah, I hit the throttle let it rumble back down...The light turned green and he was way back there.

Not a fair race at all, I think some kids just want to press my buttons to get me to nail it.

The exhaust valve opens at 3500, and gets loud. It closes below 3500rpm.

They won't be changing my gearing out.  It's a flash

I've heard a lot of complaints about the new 6.7 over the 5.9.  One of the complaints was horrible gas mileage.  I think the new emissions standards has something to do with it, though.  The 5.9 is bullet proof.  If you're pulling diesel is the only way to go.  Gassers can pull, but not very far.

I filled le Corvette up last night, 91 octane, $63.37 for 15.37 gallons.

The Cummins isn't really efficient on diesel, but for the size of the vehicle it's pretty good.

16-18mpg on 2wd rides is pretty good.

uber is actually an adjective and cant be used as a noun/by itself to describe something. it could be "uber" sweet, but not just "uber"

but yeah, neon srt4, fwd is seriously no fun, you need to get yourself a rwd car if you want to go fast and have fun. also if your gunna start making some power your not gunna have traction on the street if you want to race someone and thats really frustrating. get yourself an LS1 powered 98-02 f-body and run 12's with bolt ons for like 12k or whatever

Yea but I believe its going to upwards of 35k?

I am into turbos and tuners. Thats one of the reasons I like the srt-4, plus by the time I drive they will be cheaper.

point? Its a 2.4 engine with a turbo, all for under about 15k used. Stock times of about 13 seconds and under in the quarter mile.

Try getting that with a factory turbo'd car made in 2000 and above with under 50k miles. Sti's/wrx's all go for 17k + used with 60k miles or so. Evos are just expensive as shit, and there arn't any other "tuner" cars that come to mine with a factory turbo.

Every person here can knock the car, but when you see the facts its obvious. If you like tuner cars, turbos, and want something that performs well for a cheap price, you wouldn't be saying that suck.

:moon: :jerkoff:

Not just you Socal, everyone who thinks its a p.o.s when if your interested in that type of car, its a great value.

The fact that it's still a Neon is what I like about it.  It's like beating somebody in a Beetle.  It has to sting a little to get beat by one.  I can't see myself getting one, but if I did I'd be tempted to make it look like a regular Neon.  Just to add insult to injury.

There is something wrong with any straight man wanting to drive a bug or neon.

no there is really not. I could be saying the saying the same thing for huge trucks with huge tires and 10 inch lift with stacks. It doesn't appeal it me, and some people that I know. Its what we like, not maybe what you like.

I think trucks are big, heavy and no fun to drive and harder to make sharp turns. Therefore in my opinion gay people only drive trucks, because they will never have the experience of driving a small turbo'd car thats fun to drive.

Not liking is one thing.  But I was saying there is something wrong with any straight man wanting to drive a bug or neon.  If you see a guy driving a big truck people don't look at that as gay, but when you see a dude driving a neon....well, thats another thing.  I'm not a big fan of a big truck and I'm all about a fast car but you wont see me cruising in a turbo bug anytime soon.

The wrx is a few k more then the neon used with more miles plus the fact that the srt-4 is almost identical to the wrx as far as power goes. There arn't many tuners with turbos out there though.

One of the mechanics at work drives a Beetle.  We found out about it and gave him ten kinds of hell about it.  We asked him where he bought his rainbow sticker, etc.  His saving grace is he races a '69 Camaro.  We offered the excuse that he's driving his girlfriends car.

One of the drivers has a Neon.  He was complaining about cracking a tail light and trying to buy a new one, saying the dealer wanted total it out.   He gets good mileage though, that's what he's after.

I'd drive a diesel Jetta or Golf. They are quick and with a little modding can become really fast.

I'll stick with my truck though, it's awesome. It has no badges on it so no one ever knows they are going to get their ass handed to them until they see the black smoke. I just got 21 mpg on the drive from Phx to Tucson. If i could have stayed under 2k RPM, i might have been higher.
