he release date of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX on Verizon has been subject to plenty of speculation, rumored release dates that were eventually missed and a series of disheartening messages from the carrier's support staff.

However, another day brings with it a new rumored release date for the updated software package: Once hell freezes... Could actually  mark the start of the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade's never happening roll-out.

Last week, June 12 was raised as a possible release date for the two smartphones' Android 4.0 updates, but that day came and went without any official news. Verizon subscribers using those phones later reported receiving text messages hinting that the update should drop in the near future, but the carrier denied the messages were real, with some reports even dismissing them as spam.

However, some beta testers claim to have gotten a new beta version of the phones' Ice Cream Sandwich build, raising the chance that the update could actually drop within the Q2 release window earlier announced by Motorola. I'm going to go ahead and call shinanigans....

More fortunately, Droid-Life claims that Motorola has started sending out invites for a soak test of a new software release starting on June 22 ahead of the full public roll-out on June 27. While the Droid-Life report hasn't been verified, the website has proven reliable in the past.

For a lucky few, the first official Android 4.0 packages for the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx should get to handsets on June 27, but we all know that's bull shit.. It could take a few extra days before users get their taste of Ice Cream Sandwich.
