looking for gamer nerd internet buddy help. please......

dvd drive failed in this thing. just says "open tray" Already done it all, so please don't reply with "clean the lens" I even adjusted the laser itself.

it's just the cheapo arcade model with no hard drive. I put a external hard drive on it.
I want to just get a new dvd drive, and swap the board. straight swapping requires reflashing because drives have a matching key...which is ghay. And looks like a whore to do.

Anybody have some experience with this? doesnt look tough. soldering 6 wires. and unplugging two ribbon cables.
Or....anybody have a junk xbox with RROD they wanna gime their drive out of. (long shot, had to ask)they are pretty simple to pull out. Mine happens to be the philips dvd drive.

I don't really give two $hits, but my kids play it, and I just got a pretty good atv game for xmas, and I want to play it some more. I don't feel like being out the$ we already have in this hunk o junk.

honestly peels, (i would hate me for giving an answer like this)

but by this point you would just be beter of getting another one or sending it to microsoft for repair. because these things arent meant to be tinkered with, and you would just save yourself alot of time getting a new one. once it is apart, it will never be perfect again.

its just like how everybody on here disagrees with me buying cheap parts just because, as for in the long shot i should just get the good ones the first time. why buy a cheap chain that you would replace 3 times rather than buying one that you wont have to replace?

and i know these kinds of answers suck, but its the truth.

bring this one in to gamestop and trade it in for a refurbished one, it wont cost you more than $180 said and done. trade it in at one gamestop, and buy the new one at another so they dont know anything is wrong with it. 

once again, sorry for the bs answer. but i know xboxs are an on going cycle of problems once it starts. kinda like a dodge or a kawasaki, ya know?

i put a new drive in my previous xbox and it lasted about 40 hours, i dont reccomend doing that, i just bought a refirb from eb games/gamestop for 120$.   and you could just put yours in it and return it  saying the disk drive doesnt work

yeah then you have to flash the drive, or swap the boards between drives. Microsoft gives them matching keys that wont work if wrong. :LAME:

Im buying a new laser to slap in there ($15)- if it doesnt work, I'll have some games for sale and a new boat anchor. 

Sucks because we just bought a second controller that came in the mail yesterday so the kids can play together. Ordered while it still worked.
