I fitted a trinity 734 cc 105.5 and stage 3 webs to my red raptor and it worked great , went in like a dream.
I bought what I thought was the same kit from the same guy , and fitted it to my blue raptor , and I had ring issues . The piston was a good fit but the rings had to be filed down. They said 107 on the package. The piston would not go in without filing the rings , I never had to file rings before ( this was a 741 106 mm kit )
also trinity . I had to remove a lot more than I liked to from the rings before the piston was free and now I have blue smoke at high revs . I need to fit new rings but JE dont make a 106 mm ring and on the website they dont show a 106 mm piston. Can I fit 105.5 Rings to it ? has anyone else had issues with a 106 mm piston , and do you think it will eat itself if I run it ? we are planing a big group ride monday and I am going to give it the 15 min run in with a big fan today to see if it improves . It also has a "metalic" sound to it at low revs .... help , I may be parting out a blown up engine soon....  :(

Ive never seen a piston were I didnt have to file fit the rings. The JE even has to be file fit on the oil ring, they actually overlap most of the time when you first check em. What size gaps are you seeing and what gap are you shooting for? What is the piston to wall clearance?

ralph265

.5 mm , fitted a wiseco 12.5 piston to raptor 660 last week and the gaps where fine out of the box ,
but I am real new to 4 stroke work , This is like my third piston , and the JE came with wierd ass instructions
that I think where generic

** Blow up time ** At least I will be able to fit a stroker crank after ...  :'(

VelociRaptor

What was wierd about the instructions? .5mm is the gap your lookin for or the piston to wall clearance?

ralph265

I must of F****** it up , it smokes like a B******* so I guess I have to tear it down again . The metalic
sound was sorted by re gapping the valves. I talked to a friend of mine who is a great mechanic and he tells
me that the whole problem is due to me filing the rings with a grinding wheel. He says it must be done with a file. Great time saver  :'( now need new rings and a full days work.

  That story just helped my hangover a little bit!

Yeah and the most wonderfull thing is that absolutely EVERYTHING for modding raptors except for exhausts and filters have to some from the states , and exhausts have to some from the states anyway , as the exhausts they sell here are from the states but 3 times more expensive. So I have a 3 week wait for ANY part I want :'( unless it gets stuck in customs.... then It could be 5 weeks.... So , anyway , I'm a happy bunny.
Nobody in Spain mods anything , I mod everything , most stuff for cars and so forth can come the UK , but
riding quads is pretty much impossible in the UK , so no bits. Plus my wife is 7 months preganant and somewhat *insane* my puppy refuses to believe that crapping should be in the garden , I have had no sex for about 3 months , not going to get any for the next six months , the ecomony is shit , my guest house roof has a leek , and my best riding buddy got moved to another town half way across the country..... so do you have a
big shi* sandwich with a side of pi** in cornflakes award ? Cus I should win it .  :'( Or Dumbass of the month
award for gapping rings with a grinding wheel ?

VelociRaptor

Theres nothing wrong with useing a gridning wheel depending on type and technic used.

double check that you didn't put the 2nd ring in upside down

the second ring is "bigger" at one point ( it has like a step in it ) What should the step ( larger part ) be towards the top or the bottom ?

and thanks for the replies

Spartan

Aren't there markings on the rings to indicate which side is up?

And sorry but I was laughing at your other post pretty good, that was the funniest story I ever heard all week when you take it lightly  No offense meant, just seemed hilarious esp about the dog and the wife

No need to worry about laughing AT me , everbody does , including me  :D

** so just to keep this thread about gapping rings and 106 bores *** Tuesday this week we are getting ready to go for a five hour or so ride cus we have been getting good weather, two friends in town, raptors ready. We get home and wife lying on sofa crying . Trip to the hospital , after keeping me outside
the room for about 40 min ( worrying ) the doctor calls me in and say ( exact quote ) " What is wrong here is anxiety , you and the baby are fine , but of course you could die of heart failiure or a brain aneurism tomorow "  Me , without the benefit of 10 years of med school and whatever kinda think
that is a dumbass thing to say to someone that is suffering from anxiety . Anyway , we get back home , still in time for maybe a 3 hour ride , and as we drive
through the gate , the puppy ( who is obviously related to me cus he's dumb as shit , and related to my wife cus he's cute ) as usual runs round the car toungue out , legs all over the place ( insert labrador puppy here ) , I turn to my wife and say "lets not run over the dog " , and promptly run over the dog.
( with a range rover ) . So we rush the dog to the vet , and after a raptor's worth of xrays and whatnot , they say the puppy is fine , we must have just brushed it or something . ** So now I think that I should actually get dumbass of the month award , but maybe with a crown , or a firework display. ***
( I WISH I was making this up )   :'(
