Went to the range Saturday and banged a few rounds through the .40.  A little while later a guy walks in and sets up.  He hauls out a BFR and shoots a few rounds.  Next thing to go off looks and sounds like a stun grenade.  He's shooting a .308 pistol in an indoor range.  The muzzle flash was ridiculous.  I asked him how the recoil was.  Not bad he says.  I think, "uh huh, yeah right."  He lets me shoot it though and wow, very low recoil.  Whoever designed the brake on it earned his paycheck.  I bet any .40 or .45 semi auto has heavier recoil than this thing.  I kind of want one now, can't say it's very practical but who cares.

Got a video of him but no video when I shot it.  My friends videoed me when I shot it but the file is too large to email to me so I'll have to wait till I get a jump drive or something.

Requesting assistance gun gurus..

I'm in the market for my first gun (going to get a shotgun first since I don't need a permit to purchase)

Based on looks, I was looking at the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870.

I went to Gander Mountain and was there for about 2 hours asking questions and what not.. What I failed to ask is....  So I know both of those models are fairly common.. The question I was asked while looking was "What's it going to be used for" the kid that was helping wasn't super knowledgable but anywho....

Primarily.. It's to look cool   It's going to be part of my zombie defense kit So it'll be on the wall.. But I still plan on shooting crap with it... (Clay pigeons, pumpkins... junker cars etc)...

The one that primarily caught my eye was the 500 Persuader. I'd like one all black appearance wise... But while talking with the guy, sine the barrel is not choked at all, he said it wouldn't be good for shooting clays at all.. That sound right?

If so... What are options for just buying new barrels ???

HELP!

I think Remington offers an 870 with two barrels.  That's a good choice.  I like the Mossberg 590 but it's not cheap and comes with only a 20" barrel.  I have shot skeet with it but just goofing off at a friends.  I wouldn't actually hunt with it.  The magazine tube goes right to the end of the barrel so it holds a lot of ammo, something like eight 3" shells or nine 2-3/4" shells.  Also has the bayonet lug, just because.  Good sights too but I'm biased.

Mossberg 590 - milspec
Remington 870 - every PD in the US carries it, fewer moving parts than 590.  prob milspec (I don't know)

Several friends have 870's and love them.

Anything in particular that you didn't like or just as a whole?  My friend bought a used police 870 and being used, it was well broken in.  That slide was silky smooth.  Beat the 590 hands down there but I don't have the round count through it like the 870.

unless you want/need a slug barrel, the remington 887 nitromag is the only way to go.  you can load 2 3/4", 3", and 3 1/2" shells.  it is all black synthetic, its coating makes it rust proof, and this thing is super light.  i dislike the remington 870/deluxe and all mossbergs because of the "ting" they make when you work the pump action, you will find the 887 is solid and unnecessarily loud.  I have the 887 in 28" barrel and ill take some pics if you ever like.

870s would work in a pig trough, the moss would jam, piss poor ejector design

Another friend works for HPD and could choose between the 870 and the Benelli (M4?).  I was all, "get the Benelli!"  He said nah, it's semi auto (and $$$) and when you arrive on scene, all the bad guy hears is *click as you take off the safety.  Nothing beats a good old slide rack when somebody is trying to figure out if they're going to give up or be a knucklehead.

I do like the option of 3 1/2" shells.  Those def get your attention when you bang them off.

i believe it holds 5 shells, i have it plugged at 3.  its the most versatile of the ones you mentioned, the ability to put in whatever shell you want is huge, as long as it is a 12ga, you can fire it.. i am also a huge fan of the butt pad, it nice and squishy yet firm.  it is alot easier to shoot with a 3.5" than my buddies browning, that thing just plain hurts after about 40 shells.  go to a gun store and pick up the 887 nitromag, i promise you wont put it down
