It's time to replace the brake disc on the rear of my '06. I see a lot of wavy ones out there that look cool but I'm more concerned about quality than looks.
Suggestions?

GYT-R Engine/frame skid plate             GYT-R Nerf bars
GYT-R A-arm guards                           OMI Steering stem mount
GYT-R Aluminum radiator guard            ODI Lock-on grips

How about a genuine Yamaha wavey disc from a new SE.  That's what I'll be getting when mine need changing.

+1... check into sintered pads too.

I was just looking at those.
Now I just have to find out if if the new "SE" brakes will fit on an actual SE (my '06).

They will, they didn't change the calipers or major brake setup on any of the years (that I know of anyways). I know a guy with a 07 running a Galfer wave style rotor with no changes to the stock caliper or mounts.

UPDATED: Are we sure? Two Yamaha dealerships I just got off the phone with said they are unable to tell via their computers if Yamaha brake discs are interchangeable. I then called the Yamaha Motor USA customer service center and was told they were unsure as well. Yamaha apparently doesn't list bolt pattern within the specs for brake discs, so defaults to a 'does not fit-type' recommendation. Their best guess was that '06-'08 only might be interchangeable but they wouldn't commit to saying it would in fact work.

- AND -

The part numbers for the disc brackets have remained the same - so it would seem to make sense bolt patterns would be same - but the part number for brake pads have changed.

It's possible either they changed the pads too (it IS entirely conceivable that the manufacturer would change pad material slightly) or it's just a combo thing to match it up to the new rotor style without it cross referencing back to the 06-08 brake systems. Just get one off RMATV or through a sponsor like TQS or KB Moto, aftermarket rotors tend to be of a far better quality than OEM depending on which brand/type you get it...TQS/KB will hook you up though and make sure you have the right setup.

Very worst case, order the pads too...I would do that anyways whenever you change a rotor cause if you don't and the previous rotor was worn pretty good it will not brake as efficient and may even prematurely warp the new rotor.

I try to stick with OEM parts because I can buy them online from yamahasportsplaza.com at 30 percent off. And since I live about 20 minutes away from them I can pick up orders there to avoid shipping fees, pushing overall savings to almost 40 percent - which is significant because I'm a cheap bastard who happens to be poor.

Maybe I'll have to brake from that in this case (misspelling intended) since Yamaha doesn't seem to know its own parts.

Thanks for all the help - especially to you, Ranger. I'll update the update when I have something worth updating.

Yep, they are the same. I just got the typhoon rear rotor and it is nice, not nice to change it... had to grind the screws to get it off. I installed it together with EBC sintered metal pads and brake feels a lot better.

Ordered a '09 SE rear disk brake last week to replace my bent stock '06 one.

A nice piece for sure. The bolt pattern is 3" 25/32 or 71mm and it have a total width of 7" 7/8 or 200mm. Don't have my raptor to really compare, but it looks like bolt on. :)

I'm also concerned about it fitting within the GYT-R skid/rotor guard.

Worse case you can put a spacer where the bolts go to the skid plate and push it out a little bit...or stack washers.
