I have been thinking about getting a crossbow lately and wanted to know some opinions and general knowledge about them. What brands are good? What speeds do they shoot? How far can they be shot and still be accurate?  ???  Any information because I never never even shot one, thanks.

It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

xbow should be <350fps accuracy for a killing shot ~55-60 yards (personally, I never shoot beyond 40 with my regular bow, just too many variables)

I cna't say crossbow for sure, but I shoot regular bow. I know distance wise, they are not far apart. You pick the distances you want to sight in for. My bow is sighted in for 15, 20, and 30 yards.

I'm not sure if a crossbow sight is set up similar to a regular bow where you have 3 pins, and you set each one for a different distance.

Speeds. They are all within 300fps all depending on draw strength set. My bows draw weight is 70lbs. But, Crossbows are more since you don't have to hold them. So I would bet they have a higher fps. (350+ maybe)

Not sure about brands. Mathews, PSE, and Hoyt are all solid brands for compound bow, might look to see if they filter over into the crossbow world.

I also hunt with a compound bow. I have never really shot too many crossbows before (not legal to hunt with in Iowa unless you are disabled) but what I have read about them, the Horton Vision 175 is supposedly great.

According to that spec sheet, it can do up to 325 fps.

I have also heard that the as the price goes up with crossbows, the quality goes up also (like you would think all things should do haha). I have read a lot of times if you go with a cheaper crossbow, you get cheaper quality and more problems.

The other main thing I have read is to get a hand crank for pulling the string back helps A LOT. That crossbow above has a draw weight of 175 lbs so I imagine that would get you tired fast trying to draw it a few times

I wouldnt think you'd get to tired pulling it, only reason. If you shoot and miss. You're not gonna get another shot off before it runs away.

Unless they make revolver style crossbows?

I meant just target practicing I would think you would get tired after drawing it back so many times. But like I said, I don't know a ton about them so I could easily be wrong!

Also, I have no idea about bow fishing with a crossbow. I would imagine it can be done, but I have no idea if it is legal. Legal, smeagle, I say go for it!

Krandall

No idea. I know you can in Minnesota with Bow.

I was loooking at cross bows in the Cabelas catalog and they were ranging from 325-425fps and from about 200-700$. My friends dad has one and it's awesome to shoot. I'm more accurate with a cross bow than a bow that's forsure.

Krandall

if you want to hunt w/ crossbow, why not get a gun?

Obviously, someone needs to teach you to shoot

This thread makes me want to get back into bow-hunting. I used to be pretty good back in the day. Won every tournament I ever shot in and there still should be a shafted arrow laying around my Dads house somewhere. Been out of the game a long time now though.
