Okay, I searched and didnt find anything. It's yet another noobish question. I got new piston rings and top end gaskets. Do I have to do anything different with breaking in the motor if its only the piston rings and cylinder? I heard it only takes an hour of breaking it in if its only the top end. No head work done. Just honed the cylinder and new piston rings. And of course new top end gaskets.

Thanks, Steve

Here is some reading material for ya.
I've always followed the information in the first link.

I have read both of those. But I was wondering if there is a different way of breaking in a motor if i'm just changing the piston rings and top end gaskets? Someone told me it will only take about an hour of riding and it will be good to go after an oil change.

It's a tough subject, and you'll find conflicting ways to do it.

Mine when I got the motor built. I ran mine mildly for about 15mins and then rode the heck out of her. I only was careful going up to the HIGH rpms.

Do a heat cycle, ride w/ varying throttle and get on it a bit while you do it.  You can break it in on a ride if you need to.

LOL post of the day

I prefer the heat cycle way. Heat cycle three times with little to no throttle, then ride it like you stole it.

Whats the heat cycle way? Haha. I only know about breaking in car motors.

let it get hot all the way, idle only, or little to no throttle, then let cool completely. repeat 3x. Then ride it hard.

Update on it. I did the heat cylce 2 times then rode for 15 minutes easy, Then 45 minutes of normal riding not going past half throttle and got on it a couple of times. Followed by the oil change and new oil filter. So she is all ready now. Just kind of sounds like it has lifter tick. But still hauls. Its so hard to keep the front end on the ground. Haha
