Ventage: My Truck

So, here's my vent for the year.  Seems like no matter what you do, something goes wrong at exactly the wrong time.  I was really laying on the butter to "the War Department" this year, hoping she would put up with a new quad.  Wouldn't you know, something had to come by and EFF up all my plans.  The truck transmission let me down on Monday and right now, it looks like my quad plans are squashed.  Here's how it went:

I'm hauling the mail coming home on the interstate.  I had to run a few errands in town getting stuff for my night class on Tuesdays, and proceeded to head home for what I thought would be an uneventful night.  I buzzed along, not really thinking about anything but how I was going to fill my stomach once I got home.  I finally reached my turnoff for the exit and came to a stop to turn left and go over the overpass.  Once it was my turn to go, I poked the gas as normal and the truck didn't shift normally.  Almost like... like it was towing a load, like I was pulling a trailer with the Sears Tower on it and this is no diesel my friends.  I took a mental note as it finally shifted, that I would take a look at the fluid level when I got home as I had noticed that something was leaving a spot in the driveway under my truck.  I figured "eh, it's just leaking a little fluid, I need to service it anyway, I'll fix it then".  I came to the next Stop sign to make a right.  As I took off, it didn't shift right away... in fact, it didn't shift at all.  It acted like, "eff you dude I'm tired of carrying your A$$ to work and back every day, I'm done".  I drove the entire way across town in 1st gear going 20mph.  I say entire way across town like it's Chicago or something even though I live in a town you sometimes can't find on a map, but that's besides the point.  I got it home and immediately checked the fluid level.  Oddly enough, it seemed fine... that's bad mmmkay.  I was hoping it was the easy fix, add some fluid and be done, fix the leak later.  Nope.  I called my lead mechanic Micah and asked him to come down and take a look once he finished what he was working on.  In the mean time I was going to work on my trailer.  I went to put the truck in reverse and NOTHING.  It kind of made a sound like a wrist watch held up to your ear while having a coke addiction.  TICK TICK TICK TICK real fast and then nothing.  Great, wonder what this is.  After some more phone calls and some research, turns out I have a cracked Sun Shell.  When it goes, you loose reverse, 2nd, and 4th gear.  Seems like it's fairly common on trucks equipped with the 700R4 or 4L60E.  That's ANY light truck, S10/Blazer/Jimmy/Silverado 1500/Sierra 1500 made in the past 15 years or so.  When the sun shell cracks, you have to drop the trans, take all the "guts" out of the trans, replace the sun shell, and put it all back together.  Seems easy when i explain it like that but I assure you, it's not a job for the weak at heart.

So now, because I have no time to do it, I'm paying a good friend and long time GM Mechanic to rebuild my transmission instead of buying a quad this year.  What can I say, I can't be without a vehicle and paying him to rebuild it is cheaper than financing a new truck.  Aint life grand?

Thanks for letting me RANT. :(

NICE truck dpe_ele.  I'm told I can pretty much have "whatever I want" in about a year when she's done with school and it'll probably be something like that.

There is a guy me and sand work with that has a 03 or 04 cavi with around 300,000 miles on it. Runs like a champ and he is thinking about selling it. Someone said he wanted like $500 or something in the lines.
