you can run some nice beads  jw do you guys have any tips for me on what is a good way on getting into the trade?i graduate this year and i really enjoy welding, theres a place close by that was looking for welders and they start you at 18 an hour which i thought was really good plus they said you dont need any experience but i have a bit.

well i graduated in may 2006 and then i went to the place i'm currently working at in august 2006. i just went in, took my weld test, i didn't get the TIG job right off the bat. but they hired me as a MIG welder. and i just stayed after work a few hours a night for about 2 months straight working on my TIG tests until i finally past all 7 of them. all i can say is if you get in the door and they will higher you in any postion. just keep working on your skills and then work your way up. when i started my job i was getting paid $12.56 per hour(as a MIG welder). i got a few raises and i got up to $16 per hour, then when i past my TIG tests they bumped me to the bottom of the TIG pay scale which was $19.75 at the time. now i'm up to a little over $20 per hour. trust me if you can get in the door i would take it man. especially at you age. that's all i ever hear from people, is that i'm to young to be making that kind of money. lol if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

thanks

it took me about 5 minutes to weld those cans together. i used a 3/32 tungsten sharpened to a point, i started with 1/16 filler rod but it wasn't filling fast enough, so i went to 3/32 filler too. and i used a number 4 gas cup. i had my machine set to 91 amps, because thats where it was for what i was welding for work, but i was probably only using maybe 20-30 amps. i was barly on the peddle at all. lol what kind of settings does your machine have? if it has some of the ones i used to could tell where i had them set.

yeah that's exactly right. that's why i welded the bottoms together. that's where the cans are the thickest. my next project though is to weld a piece of .012 thick aluminum sheet to the side of a pop can.  :)

or you could cut two cans in half(like a coke and pepsi) and weld them together 8)

Warren

i have thought of that too. lol. i will see how just welding down the side goes first though.

just wondering, do you have any idea what kind of money a journeyman welder makes once he's kind of topped out(as much as he'll make sort of thing)? thanks

depends if u want to be structural, or pipe, or tube, or rig welder..I'm structural welder ATM getting paid 24 per hr and 70 a day per Diem (7 days a week),mandatory 50 hrs per week( over 40 is OT) and that's kinda low, I've been a journeyman welder for about 3 yrs, u don't really get raises as a journeyman. just some companies pay more than others.

true that, i gave that some thought, didnt know if i wanted to weld on barges uderwater in the river(undertow,visibility,ect..)....or even if i could imagine what it would be like uderwater in the ocean welding and see a shark,whale,ect..

Warren

plus underwater welding messes with your body big time. a few a the guys from my work went to a class that was close here and they said the instructor was only like 35 and he looked like he was about 65. it's from all the pressures of the water. yeah that's just not for me. lol
