The F-4 Phantom II flies for the first time.

The first and last manned fighter aircraft produced without guns.  ???  They corrected that in later models F-4s.

Sorry, you weren't on yet when I made the statement.

The F-4 is also one of my favs. The F4 was stationed here for a long time prior to the F16 and now the A10 at our local Air Guard base.

My Uncle flew F-4's during Vietnam.  It's fun to listen to him talk about his transition from A-4 Skyhawks (What Viper/Jester flew in Top Gun)to F-4's.  He loved the power of the F-4, but the A-4 could turn on a dime.  He said he used to wrap the A-4 around inside of a mountain canyon, whereas if you tryed that with the F-4 you'd ended up a greasy spot on the mountain side.

The A4 was much more manuverable, but lacked the speed, and payload of the F4.

Definately, the A-4 was designed with Close air support in mind.  The F-4 was the first "Interceptor/light bomber"
