Pics of motor tear down.
« on: January 04, 2009, 03:32:39 PM »
Just tore down my top end for a little "freshning up" and thought I would share some pics. In my eyes it looks DAMN good and will use the piston for another season with some new total seal rings. Their is'nt even a scratch on the skits.  They cylinder has me a little concerend there is some pitting marks (dont know what to call it). You can bairly feel it with your fingernail. I almost want to say its like rust, but could'nt be.

Take a look....

What fuel/oct are you running with that Venon? Looks like maybe a hair on the rich side, but for a season it looks good.

Plug seems to look good though. can see that nice brown.

That pitting looks a bit on the odd side.  I'd maybe shoot Bo a PM. Get his thoughts.

Yeah, I didn't catch that.

I've been really considering going with a 12.5:1 or a 14:1.

That pitting kinda looks like porosity in the sleeve to me. Could it be the beginning of electrolysis from dissimilar metals ?
Any chance your head gasket was letting any coolant into the cylinder? Did you run coolant or straight distilled water ?

I NEVER had to add coolant to the rad, but I did add a little coolant to the overflow once or twice. The only time it would push the coolant out of the overflow was when it was beat really really hard. The only times I could remember it doing it was when I let 3 of my buddys drag race it 20-30 times in a row. After that I remember seeing some coolant residue on the out side of the motor.

Looking at the the headgaskets I see no sign of coolant getting through. I always used the 50/50 premix ethylene glycol and distilled water.

on the one pic of the exhaust valve, is that a white build-up on it? Or just from the flash?
