Hey fellas,

So i have comcast internet @ home w/ an Arris tm402p modem, and my linksys WRT54GS V6 Router W speed boost (about 1.5 years old)

When i run a speed test from the computer wired directly to the router i get about 16000 down and 3500 up.

Now the issue is when i run a speed test from my laptop which is up stairs (router is in basement i use laptop on main floor)

I get 8800 down 2623 up ish

Am i supposed to loose that much bandwidth?
My main annoyance is that when playing COD i can never host a freaking game. it always kicks everyone out and i already made it a DMZ(ps3 is connected wirelessly.)

Thanks for your help in advanced!

Can you relocate your Linksys router to a centralized location?

You're going to loose bandwidth especially if your router is in the basement.

Looks like you are getting near full potential of the router. The max speed it can handle is 125Mbps through wireless

The problem with comcast is... When you do speed tests, they are good and all, but comcast w/ speed burst only helps for short spurts of speed and doesn't typically help your upload speed. Upload is what you really need for hosting servers for gaming. And that is where comcast lacks (because they are Nazi's) For hosting more than 4 people, I'd guess you'd need at least a 768k upload dedicated to not notice any dropping. If you have just one person connect to your server do you notice dropping or only when there's multiple? If it's only when there's multiple. It's comcast upload speed related. If it does it also w/ just one person, I'd try like brian said, relocating the router.. your overall best bet would be connecting via hardwire though.. because you'd be getting a full 100MB/sec (or... 800Mb/second) vs the wireless which is 15MB/sec (or.. 125Mb/sec). So.. Just going to wireless your sort of shooting yourself in the foot.

Hi Randy thanks for the quick responce and intel.

This is happening when hosting 8+ people so thats probably my problem right there(have yet to host just 1 person)
I think i am going to relocate my modem directly next to my PS3 so i can take full advantage of my connection, its just gonna be a pain running that cable wire.
I did not know there was such a drop from wireless to wired, i thought it was minimal with our technology. Guess i was wrong.
I was thinking of doing the DD-WRT firmware hack but i am not that sure i can follow all those instructions. Anyway thanks for the help and let me know if theres anything else i should do.

Does the PS/3 Have wireless built in or are you running a bridge?

Darn, I was going to say. There's Wireless N routers out now. They support up to. 248 Mb/sec

and I lied. Wireless G is 108Mb/sec not 125.  :)

So would a Wireless N Router do anything for me? Or no because the PS3 has built in wireless....

Krandall

You'd get better transfer rates, but you'd have to buy a wireless bridge for the PS/3 (just a little gaget that pluggs into the ethernet port and sends/recieves the wireless signal. AND you'd have to buy a new router. ::)

You got to remeber who the networks are designed for.  99% of home based web user's are just browsing websites (Or posting to Raptorsource  ).  So Hyper upload speeds are not required.

The >1 percent of Internet users that are FPS gamers suffer due to the demographics of the industry.
