GM Ceasing Corporate Aviation Operations

DETROIT -- GM today announced that it is ceasing operations at General Motors Air Transportation Services (GMATS) at Detroit Metro Airport.

Due to significant cutbacks over the past months, GM travel volume no longer justifies a dedicated corporate aircraft operation.

GM is currently exploring options for transferring its aircraft to another operator. The company is pursuing sale of four of the aircraft so it can terminate the leases.

GM will shutter the facility at Metro Airport effective January 1, 2009. GM will work with the airport to seek a tenant for the balance of the lease, which expires in 2009.

Now I'm sure they will just charter jets, or buy fractional shares.

Ford did the same.

Buy into a private jet lease...instead of a fleet. Do you need a fleet when your business is in the tank?

This just makes me sick.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/12/04/news/companies/saving_detroit/index.htm

The CEOs of the nation's Big Three automakers are on Capitol Hill today asking for a $34 billion bailout package. GM wants $18 billion, Chrysler $7 billion and Ford wants up to $9 billion as a backstop. Their last visit to Capitol Hill was a public relations disaster. Each CEO flew to D.C. in their own corporate jets. This time, they all drove fuel-efficient hybrids.

And since the Big Three's 14,000 dealers employ about 740,000 people nationwide, legislators have to worry about rising job losses if a Big Three automaker were to fail -- even if their district is no where near the Midwest auto belt.

Thats won't cost dealerships, what is costing dealerships is the credit markets and lack of consumer confidence.

It's time for some of that "Feel Good" talk E's dad was talking about the press unleashing. One thing about Clinton first taking office, everything was a positive coming from the press, no "doom and gloom" talk. Get on with it already, I've got bills to pay!

No shit, they still are putting a negative spin on everything.  Maybe we'll have to wait for Obama to get into office.  They don't want to push any good news at all just in case it reflects positively on Bush.

I think the doom and gloom stuff has peaked. Now it all revolves around the big three and job loss reports.

+1 Getting monotonous now. Yeah...we know it's not going well, find something else to talk about.

But big business execs have to remember the rest of us are out here. And not to be wasteful. Just out of respect....Very disheartening to see a bread line followed by the CEO of a large corporation sipping champagne on his private jet...all on the same news program.

But if anyone of us worked out way up to his level we would be pissed if someone asked us to only make 40k.
