My dad has a 98 dodge ram 2500 80,000 miles that wont go into 4wd. Its happend in the past and it was a loose hose the came unattached. Vacum leak. We pluged it back on and the truck had 4wd. But now the 4wd is not working and the hose is still attached. The 4wd light wont even come on. What could it be? I trust you guys to help me and my dad as he is not happy at all. We have the wost luck with vehicles. Trust me.

Well to start off it is a dodge.  JK

Does it have a switch to put it in 4wheel drive?

blueyamaha

Not a switch. Its on the floor as a pull lever.

dick-84

WOW. I thought that went right to the transfer case. I know dodge had a problem with there transfer cases.

first off this should be in dodge section and if i was a mod i could take care of this **cough cough**

id guess this had a disconnect on axle? when you enguage the 4wd does the front shaft spin? easy way to check this is to jack up rear end so tire are off the ground. next if it is spinning then you have a problem with you disconnect you can pull it off with 4 10mm bolts and vacuum test it on the bench. once disconnect is removed you can see how it works. you will see sleve that locks two shafts together. if not what case does it have in it? 241?

the lever might be slightly bent or almost broke?

Or maybe the vacum line is dry rotted and is leaking or is pluged up.

or it is a dodge. They had way to many trans/transer case/rearend problems. But i think they got them all worked out now.

I am with beaner, check the front axle disconnent. They have a habit of the vacuum pod going bad or the fork itself may be fractured where the shaft goes through it. They are easy to take apart. remove the 3 e clips and then slide the shaft out so you caninspect the fork.
