Anyone know about gearing? I was going to get an F-450 but the dealer talked me out of it. He said the 450s come with either 410s or 430s. Says they only get 6-10 MPG. He said the F350 come with 383s that will let it get between 15-20 MPG.

Any truth to this?

It's a good time for buying trucks, MSRP was 63K on the one I looked at and they offered it to me for 41K+tax after rebates.

Ford is offering up to $7500 in rebates right now through the 30th. I am going to gamble and wait for the first of the month and see what they offer. Truck sells are stagnant nation wide I think they are going to offer a $8-10 grand rebate in Oct.

I am going to use the X plan (from a relative) The plan get you below dealer invoice and you still get all rebates and incentives. This should beat the deal I spoke of earlier.

I can't wait! Should have it for the trip to the dunes in Oct.

haha busted

oh and back to topic. you wont be seeing anywhere near 20mpg with that truck. you will be lucky to get 15mpg ougta it.  thats a big truck to expect good mileage out of. the 383gears should help you on the highway. but i would think they would hurt you alittle in towing and around town driving for that size of truck

It is a good time to buy trucks because the dealers can't move them, and make killer deals.

On the 08 GM, Ford, and Dodge the gov has asked for better emissions and caused the diesel makers stress. They all are running a Re-generation now and the fuel mileage has gone way down. The Ford F450 is a serious fuel hog because of the added weight and gearing. At work we have 2 new F550 reg cab, 4x4, utility bed trucks making 6 - 8 mpg. Great running, best I've driven yet and even cruise better than our older 6.0L. We also have a 08 F250 2x4, ext-cab, long bed and it makes 15 mpg. It is also the smoothest truck, runs great.

I have read there are some mods to do that gets the mpg up.   I am buying it for towing my forty foot fiver.  Fully loaded it comes in around 15K  The F 350 should do fine with the 383s.

Oh I lied, I don't work for the IRS, I work for the Air Force.

There are mods that you can do to increase the mpg and towing. Beware that if not properly controlled the exhaust gases can increase and hurt the manifolds. It is highly recommended to add gauges to monitor that stuff. We have pulled all kinds of weights with no problem with stock 250s and 350s. Have even double towed with an F350 for a 2000 mile round trip into the mountains of Colorado.

Unless they changed it for the 08's, ford doesn't offer 3.83's...they are 3.73's.  Thats what I'm running in my truck (2004 F-250 6.0 diesel crew cab 6' bed with 38" tires) and I can still pull 20+mpg on the highway if I stay under 70.  But as far as gearing goes...it all depends on the speed you want to run.  If you want to run 70+ down the highway, then 4.30's will have your RPM's screaming and you mileage will be bad.  If you keep it around 55mph, you will still get good mileage and it will help out while towing a big load.  If you want to run a little quicker, 3.73's are good.

The DPF on the 08's is what is killing the mileage, if you get rid of that...you can expect much better mileage.  Also, if you do something like a SCT tuner, or a Spartan, you can get better mileage plus a ton more power.  But you would want to get some gauges to go with the tuner to keep the EGT's and everything in check.
