gearing help!!!!!!! please

Im running a 13 tooth up front and a stock rear. my question is if I go to a 40 in the rear will my stock chain still work?  here is what im trying to do. Im going to sand mountain nv and running comp hill. right now with the 13 tooth im pulling a hard 4th gear. what im wanting is to pull 5th. just wanting to know if that is going to make me faster or should I leave well enough alone.  It works in my head that if I go bigger in the back by a couple of teeth I should be able to  pull 5th.

You could gear more for 4th so its less shifting

well I get them at the bottom of the hill but at the top i lose. they catch me at the end. so if I can get ito 5th I think they might not get me.??

oh and right now if I try 5th it bogs but 4th is wound out.
