Wings are not like a conventional aircraft.

They are swept forward instead of backward. The airplane, a Sukhoi S-47 Berkut was only a prototype, and it never made it into full production. It used the same engines as the Mig 31.


Several advantages to a forward swept wing, higher lift component, reduced bending moments, and delayed stalling. The biggest disadvatage comes from twisting, which during manuevering can rip the wings off. Composite materials must be used to make theses types of wings.

didn't NASA have the x-31? (not sure on the name). Forward swept concept. But it took too much computer power to keep it in stable flight..  It maneuvered well, but pilot couldn't keep up with all of the adjustments necessary for level flight.

There was an X-31. It was a pioneer of thrust vectoring. The plane you're thinking of is the X-29, and you are correct!

Yep X-29 was an experimental aircraft to explore highspeed airflow dynamics and manuverablity  :thumbs:

x-29, x-31 blah blah blah :lol: thanks guys. I figured you would know the name. It had a bunch of giant computers in it, making it impractical for production, but useful for experimenting. I remember seeing it when I was a kid...at an airshow...and thinking WOW!!  how futuristic  :lol:

it was never intended for production R&D only, although some of the lessons learned were incorperated in the F-16XL program, but they were'nt funded by the Air Force.  The design technology knowledge is highly apparent in the F-117, B-2, F-22, and F-35  :thumbs:

The B-2 still amazes me......Fly by wire shit is unreal, especially since it lacks vertical and horizontal stabilizers.
