Title: Could you survive?
Post by: Gunz on November 27, 2011, 11:59:38 AM
If the government had a break down, leading to civilization going to shit, could you survive? No more public gas, electricity, markets, nothing. Would you, could you survive? How? What would your plan be? I would gather up all the survival things I could such as tools, weapons, canned food, blankets, and move north towards Colorado Montana area and do what I could to find shelter and hold down fort.

Yep. and part of me is ready for it. Not for my kids to suffer or anything...but complete bedlam would be kinda humorous.

Dont go to Montana, yellowstone will blow, and youll be barbequed. Im getting a boat on the mIssisippi, and calling it the "Vagina boat to freedom." You can get on only if you can clean a fish, and have a vagina. Then, me and my new fishing harem will head south to the gulf settling somewhere in mexico, restarting civilization.

just as long as it doesn't happen till Sat morning, I will be sweet.
I have my own land, water supply, & can generate power if needed.
Flatmate has horses so transport is covered
Have guns, but would not want to rely on them too much, so good that I have bows & arrows too..........

Hmmm, might have to figure out a bio-fuel plant so I can still play on the raptor though!

Safety in numbers.  If you want to make it long term, you would have to form a small community and be able to spread the load around.  I'd gather my family and the friends that could contribute (life's rough, no room for dead weight) and head for my inlaws place.  They raise cattle and have a pretty big ranch with running water (not common around here).  I think that would be our best place to ride it out.  There is high ground at three points around their place where you could see anything coming for a long way and deliver some ordnance if necessary.

every week i hope and pray it waits till the next payday, cause i am always finding more shit i need to buy. i only have about 30k rounds of ammo so i definitely need more of that. and the hot chick back home knows if anything ever happens to bline for my parents house lol. shes hot and one hell of a shot. dont have an exact bug out plan yet but still working on it, i am sure i would go to northern michigan, hard winters but easy to hide and lots of food. my brother has gone so far he is learning how to brain tan deer hides and goes out learnign what plants are edible and where to find them. oh and i also have a seed vault with all non hybrid seeds so they can be replanted.

still need water filtration stuff, not worrying about gas masks yet lol

What would your plan be? I would gather up all the survival things I could such as tools, weapons, canned food, blankets, and move north towards Colorado Montana area and do what I could to find shelter and hold down fort.

Actual movement would be difficult.  The roads would be a series of ambushes.  Whatever movement you made would have to be made pretty quick, before the traffic jams and the collapse.  When Hurricane Ike blew in, all the highways out of town were jammed solid.  People sat in their cars and idled them dry.  Read an account where a guy burned half a tank of gas and had traveled less than five miles.  He turned around and went home figuring he was going to either ride the storm out in his car or in his house.  A buddy went to Lufkin, about a two hour drive, and it took him twelve hours.  I'm sitting my butt and home and hunkering down.

Before the Ike hit, I went to Walmart and bought two of the large rubbermaid trashcans.  I washed and bleached them out then put them in the house and filled them with water and a splash of bleach.  I'm all electric with a water well so when the power goes out, I'm screwed.  And no generator.  A well armed neighborhood is a polite neighborhood  so we didn't experience any problems there.

Houston is pretty big with lots of mouths to feed.  I live in the outskirts so I'll probably end up as cannon fodder.  All those people won't stay in the city for long.  I'll have looters to eat until I run out of ammo.   :puke:

History Channel:  After Armageddon (1 of 9, this should be a playlist), pretty interesting stuff played out here.

Here's a few ideas for survival off grid

Fresh water - Sand point well

Water purification/cooking
Denatured alcohol stove - single jet, double jet, coil type. http://youtu.be/3Bl0Yr_wS0U

Solar cooking in pyrex containers

Heating
Rocket mass heaters (rocket stoves)  http://youtu.be/-jzKKIHhTU0

waste oil heater  http://youtu.be/X51gD6YXNko

babington burner http://youtu.be/pBC7fCOGmi0

brake drum heater http://youtu.be/Sir6r1xlHi4

Showers - solar

In my search for fire & fire related things I came across these videos.  Some of the videos are from tree huggers living off grid & I laughed at them but when America turns to crap everyone will need some survival skills & caveman technology. Is there an app for that ?

The most appealing to me ? The rocket mass heater, they are used in 3rd world countries & are very veratile as they can be fired by animal dung.   ???  People are cooking on top of them. A copper coil can be used for heating water or making steam.  The rocket mass stoves exhaust  (chimney) is ran underground & will heat the floor.  The chimney can be routed thru an earthern bench which absorbs heat during the day while the stove is in use & releases it slowly during the night acting as a heatsink offering a more comfortable nights sleep. Throw a sleeping bag on top & float away into dreams of refrigeration, electricity, cable TV & Raptors  Cheap to build. Simple. They can be bought commercially as a table top stove.  A lot of possibilites.

I don't think the average person is prepared for a natural disasters or power outages. How many of you have hand crank weather radios or flashlights? Generators ? Candles ? Wood burners? I could go on... I hope it never happens.  I watched the movie Contagion the other day. That will get you thinking. If you haven't seen it I'd recommend it

Just for fun - Rubens tube - http://youtu.be/J9mgLcZv1Do

pool/hot tub heater. Heated patio. Domestic hot water at a cabin. With a water or glycol PEX system buried around the exhaust you could capture heat & reclaim it thru a  heat exchanger & have forced air heat. Creating steam power with the stove has its risks but the possibilites... Steam driven generator ?  Water super heater.

What worries me is I was thinking that too, lol.  I didn't say anything because I thought it was a bit morbid.  But you know, heck with it.  They died already, I'm gonna roll them and take what I need.  Then give them a Viking funeral.  <- Yeah yeah, that's it.

I would just stay in Washington it has plenty of deer (food). plenty of water (rivers and lakes) plus ALOT of wood. Also the mountains will be a good place to hide out in. Only thing I am missing is a few guns and as Dragon said a bow or two with plenty of arrows to last a while. I am also missing an axe for chopping the wood (would like a chainsaw but as mentioned before gas will be scarce sooner or later and would rather not rely on one)

See if it was a nucular blast then pretty much anyone who was not underground before the blast would end up dieing. I don't have an underground bunker to shelter myself in so I would be fucked. My thoughts were for if the world went chaotic, no nucular shit, I would just  hide out in the woods and build a nice shelter prior to winter because it could get nasty in the mountains of washington.
