Title: Will Colorado700r own me a case of beer??? Date set
Post by: preddy08 on May 29, 2008, 01:13:38 PM
Well headed out to Colorado July 24-27th to ride a bit with the girlfreind. The raptor is DYNO TUNED as of now and runs like a top!

In the past Colorado700r has been pretty adamint (sp?) about the 700's will adjust them self for elevation changes (I know they wont). He said that he will buy me a case of my beer of choice if my quad runs like poo po :batman: So the challange is on. I will be near Alma, colorado on the 5th. Its a meir 14,000ft high

Colorado700r, you do know my beer is miller light right? Oh wait, what is the most expensive beer out now??? :D

I am getting thirsty just thinking about it :grin_nod:

Its a tough one, I've heard good arguments on both sides.  But when I went up to big bear mine ran fine and thats at 7500 feet so I tend to agree with Aaron.

Care to get in on the wager??? I could use two cases of beer

Keep in mind that I am going from 1,100 to 12,000-14,000+ above sea level.

If the raptors adjust for elevation then why do we need PC3's? Its the same theory. You need an O2 sensor to complete the fully adjustable FI system.

I took the same trip last year and it ran HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only bet on a sure thing, and I can't be a 100% on it.  I just know I went from sea level to 7500 with out a problem.  So who knows what will happen.

But along that same idea, why does Aarons quad run well?

It runs well to what he knows........lol. you loose like 3% of power for ever 2000ft of elevation you go up. Bikes are "setup" to where they are shipped to.

I know that on predators the standard jetting is a 45pj and a 150mj.

I have seen some in the higher elevation come factory with 40pj and 140mj.

pretty sweet!

Nope, lots of places out here I have yet to discover.

Check this shit out....

I just got off the phone with Rocky mountain cycle plaza (Stealership I bought my Rappy from here in CS).  I asked them about the quad set-up.  They said the DO NOT make any changes or touch the fuel injection at all  ???  He said that the Rappy does very small adjustments on the first ever start up to adjust for the enviroment.

He also said (This should invoke memorys Preddy ) that you should unhook the battery for awhile and let the system reaquire a start up reading if you have issues.  I our case, this also would require a remap via a laptop to the PC3 or else we'd be at the zero map again  ???

IDK, guess we'll find out, and I love free beer

Please just all me Shawn  Preddy is so informal

Have'nt we herd that before, unhooking the battery to reset the "memory" I believe that some eles has proved that wrong????? oh well ;)

What would be a good place to take the Girlfreind? She will be riding tandum with me. Also don't let the cat out of the bag, but one of the days i am up there I will be "poping" the question. So no areas too rough, don't want an $8,000 ring rolling down the mountain :'( :'( :'(

Dude, Lake George is perfect!!!  I'll post some pics later before I pack up for walden.  Fast, but smooth trails and absolutely beautiful with rock cliffs, snow capped 14er's and a small lake at the bottom.  And the best part is there hardly anyone ever out there, so no need for extra "privacy"  :grin_nod:

I am tuned at 5,200 ft and ride at 8,500.  It runs like it should, just has less power obviously because of less air.  I got spoiled at Sand Mtn mine runs really good there compared to where I usually ride   I couldn't imagine riding above 12,000ft.  My car has a really hard time above that altitude let alone a single cylinder motor.

I know it will be fine since I and other people change and ride at different altitudes all the time and ours run just fine without doing a thing to them.  I don't think you can compare a fuel injected vehicle with a power control module and O2 sensor to a single cylinder fuel injected motor with a fuel control box.  If yours runs like crap it will be because you are used to being at sea level and the machine actually have true power down there  :P

Dirt riding sucks anyways, ride sand  :grin_nod: :grin_nod: :P

Preddy, you might be buying some beer buddy.  I ride the same areas in Colorado and Wyoming as most guys here and get up to around 10-12,000 and have ridden close to sea level with no problems at all.  I also got away with running 91 fuel in Kansas with my 12.5:1 piston with no problems.  I think you get up here and just get really dissapointed, it sucks when you are used to killer performance and come ride above 10,000 feet where your motor makes 30% less power.  That takes a 70 horse bike down to 50 quick.  I do know I like to ride at the low elevations from time to time, makes your bike feel like a complete badass for awhile!

I know about power loss in the mountains. Gas motors loose about 3% for every 1000' you go up.

My bike ran perfect here and supddered and poped like crazy!

So just to update this thread for future readers....

Preddy (Shawn's) bike ran quite well at Walden Colorado.

However, he was not running it at the extreme altitude (14K ft) that had previously either.  I believe the current consensiss is that the Raptor does infact adjust for altitude, however may not be able to adjust to extreme diffrences.

I'll qualify our results, remember niether of us changed our PC3 maps for the alt.

Preddy's results:

Omaha, NE (Home) ~980ft to Walden CO. ~8416 ft.  His Raptor adjusted for a ~7,436 ft altitude change

Colorado700R (Aaron) Results from previous trips:

Colorado Springs, CO (Home) ~6100ft to Tarryall, CO ( riding area trail head) ~8,865ft to Wausau, WI (Parents' house) ~1195 ft.

Also, the trails I hit around Beuno Vista, Colorado are 9,400 ft to 11,800ft.

So what kind of beer do you like Aaron?

Well, I did post in the "Beer of choice" thread that I'm a Guiness man , but since Shawn's got a wedding to save for I think we'll just have to split a case of Miller over a camp fire sometime

I think that 8000 ft is all it can handle. My bike ran alright, not good, but alright. It had NO top end and was lazy to rev. Even Troy will tell you that. At home the bike will rev so fast that its hard to keep up with, and the top end is where all the power is at.

Will it adjust its self, yes, but to an extent.

Yeah it wanted some more topend for sure, but what it really is asking for is a set of duals and a Dynatek custom tuned :grin_nod:  Mine feels the same way at lower altitudes, you can't shift fast enough to stay in the power band.  Just be glad yours only runs that way when you come up for a visit, us poor bastards have to ride like this all the time :(.  I'm sure two bikes built the same will have different maps at each altitude giving that bike the advantage in their own back yard.

I think what we're saying is if you have map built for the median of you altitude changes you expect, it'll give you the best results.  So if ride at 1000ft, but also ride at 8000ft, if your map was setup @ 4000ft, the rappy should be able to use the small adjustments it makes so you have good power at both areas.

Ill agree with that.

So...

The question is with that being said Aaron... Can a person when getting their bike dyno-tuned @ 0' sea level request that their bike be tuned for 5000' due to them traveling between 10,000 and 0'?  ???

I doubt that they can predict what the A/F ratio would be at 10,000+ ft. You could get close, but there is to many factors that come into play.

I don't believe you could properly set a bike for an altitude besides for the one your at ???  You can't pull oxygen outta the air to take the proper measurements.  I've heard of some folks setting up for a 12.5 to 1 A/F ratio so they're not to too rich in the mountains, but I have to disagree with that approach.  The total air amount is constent regardless of altitude, it's the oxygen content that is less up here.  The air mixture up here has more nitrogen and some other trace gases that are lighter than oxygen effecting the overall density of the mixture, but not by a ton becuase the average oxygen content is only 20% at sea-level and roughly 18.7% at 9K.

But honestly I don't think its a big deal since Natural Raptor, Shawnz, and Myself are all running the same map.  I've run above 11K feet, Natural and Shawnz are right near sea level.  The map may not be perfect, for them, but it's real darn close.  Both have reported that the bikes pull harder with my map than any others they've had.

I will definately agree though that above 10K the oxygen content ramps down quickly (hence why fighter pilots are trained to always have their masks on above 10K), and thats why I think Shawn had major issues at 14K cause the rappy was measuring for overall density and couldnt compesate that drastically.

Ya riding at high altitude sucks.  Not enough air up here to shove in the motor!

I was told by a couple builders here in Colorado that you DO NOT have to change maps for altitude.  I could get a map from a guy at sea level and run it here at 5k feet and it will be the exact same.  These are guys that make custom maps that are almost like going to a custom dyno tune.  You just loose compression up here due to less air.  You don't have to remap when you change your compression right.

Very interesting info guys!

Now I have a question that was touched on earlier in this thread...

If I reset the battery (take both terminals off and system clears) Am I at the base yamaha map? I know for cars this is how it works (you need to reflash your custom tune/map to get it back to where it was).

Anybody know? I have not gotten a new map on my raptor yet but it has lid on stock airbox with pro flow k&n and barkers..and I had to reset the battery (long story) so hopefully its not on the STOCK map!!!?!?

Your power commander should not lose it's map

I have personally lost my map in the PC3 when I've removed my battery for an extended time.  When I pulled my battery this winter to clean up and resecure some wire routing, when I reinstalled the PC3 and battery and then tryed running the bike it sputtered and popped.  When I pulled the map off the PC3 to my laptop it was all 0's (Stock Map) ???  .

I know others have done similar things and have not lost the map, but I always bring my laptop when I ride now, just in case.
