Well I love everything blacked out so I have been adding a lot of black parts to my quad. I will have pics of that stuff soon (once its all done and back together) but here are the parts I took off to paint:
- Headlights & Tailight I used VHT "Niteshades" tint. I did two light coats so they still transmit light (no point in having them if they dont work!)
- Wheel guards...they were there so they got the black treatment
- Radiator... I saw one other person on the forum did this so I snagged the idea
- & The barkers! I masked off the red labels as I still wanted them red. I did everything in Duplicolor Header paint. I had used VHT Header paint first but it was a complete matte black, where as the duplicolor is more of a semi-gloss black. I was going to have the cans PC'd but for 60 bucks I just thought I would rather just use the paint... I also considered ceramic coating the headers but thats 170-250+ My total investment was a few hours time, some tape and a couple of cans of paint.

So far I left the barker tips x2 the heat shields x4 and the straps x2 natural aluminum. I am thinking they might get the black treatment too so its ALL blacked out.
I am VERY pleased with how all of it turned out! I cant wait to get the quad back together. Should look pretty menacing :)
Let me know what you guys think!!! I am really happy how it all looks. Plus my GF has big boobs..so life is good! :woot:
-Mike
everything looks really good. great job man.
prove it w/ the girlfriend.
jk, I would leave the straps and heat shields, it gives everything some definition and contrast. that all turned out very good though!!! 8)
wow, that came out great, can't wait to see it all on the quad. what color are your plastics and frame? i have thegrey with red frame and have been thinking about going all black wih the red frame.
Thanks guys I am stoked to put it all together. I bought it as a stock 2007 SE but have added a LOT of stuff to it. Its orange and black plastics with silver frame (wish it was black...thanks yamaha for that!) but I am adding a lot of black stuff, both the stuff I painted and aftermarket.
I should have everything buttoned back up in the next 7-10 days so I will get some pics then :)
& Krandall...maybe some day :) I will see if I can do some convincing!
As far as the heat shields/straps and tips I think im going to leave them silver for the rebuild and see how it all looks. They are obviously easy to remove parts so I can paint them later if I see the need.
For the tips... My plan is to leave the whole thing silver but hand paint (brush) the little milled out areas (there are like 6 of them I think around each tip)...should look good! Plus the tips are CNC'd so I dont really want to cover them up completely.
You could always tear it down to the frame 8)
Great work Mike. Can't wait to see it all on the quad. And to see how the paint holds up on the headers.
Did you use the high temp paint like people paint car headers with?

In his post he said he used Duplicolor Header paint, I wonder how that holds up.
Thanks Erich. I am more than pleased how it turned out. And my taping skillz were not too bad on the labels!
As far as taking it down to the frame...wish I had the ambition. Now would actually be the time to do it since its half apart anyway. BUT... might do it next winter when the motor gets "freshened up" :)
But ya it is the high temp header paint from duplicolor. The rating on duplicolors can is "1200*" where as VHT's (what i used for the base coat on everything) is (1200-2000*). I am 99% sure the cans will hold up, but worse case scenario if it burns up on the headers I will just clean them up and respray with the VHT 1200-2000 stuff so I know it will last.
I just really prefer the "semi-gloss" black of this duplicolor stuff to the complete FLAT/Matte black of the VHT.
I agree, if there was a way I could get my headers gloss black I would be all over it.
On a side note, you should come up with Jake when we pull my engine. We'll have plenty of pizza.
Thanks for the offer. But shit...I owe Jake for him storing/helping with my teardown and install of parts.
Guess Jake and I will just need to order a SHIT TON of pizza...lol.
I would like to come when he goes...we will have to see what time of the month it is (that sounds weird..lol). But I cant do much better than eye-balling my front end so maybe you can throw us some tips on getting the houser/motowoz combo dialed in.

Jake wanted me to dial his in too so just bring the both of your quads up and we'll get it take care of.
Yeah, I don't think there's a way to get a gloss look on headers. I know even polished pipes on hot rods dull after the heat. Ive been tempted to take the header paint to mine... we'll see.
I wonder what would hold up better, that paint or the ceramic.
Ceramic is better by far.
Reason why people go w/ the do it yourself painting is it's WAAAAY cheaper to do.
oh, and roost, I've been reading about high temp paint, Sounds like to make it last for a long while, you are supposed to cure the paint by baking it in a 350-400 degree oven for 2-3 hours.
Sounds like you need to throw those parts in the oven. The headers should be able to fit, but the cans might not.
mike if all else fails i throw your quad on the trailer with mine and we will get it done and its no problem helping you out man glad to help anyone out just been really busy last few weeks so cant really get much done
Sounds like a plan. We should be able to get it all done in one day.
Ya ive been pretty busy too lately..o well there is only like 10% left to do...all of it should be able to be done in one night.
And thanks for the invite Erich I will probably take you up on that!
As far as the ceramic coating, it would for sure be more durable and probably have better heat dissipation characteristics BUT The paint I used DOES have ceramic in it :)
Ya they said for the best heat protection to heat the parts in cycles... 350* for 3 hours, 450 for 1.5 hours and 600 for like 45 minutes, allowing equal amounts of time to cool between the heat cycles.
THe funny part is...we are in an apartment for school, and leave soon. So please believe im cooking the parts in the oven! lol..the can says not to do it in an oven where food is prepared...o well... We pay 1020 a month for the damn place, I will use the oven for whatever I DAMN PLEASE! :)
Sounds like a plan, so when are you done with school, and where are you going back to?
Do you think you can get your oven up to 600?
o GERD your cooking again hope it doesnt turn out like those burnt ass cookies you made lol
Well our oven goes to 550*, so might have to let it pre-heat for a really long time and try to only open the door as long as I need to, to throw the parts in.
That, and once I get it installed and ride the first time I will be sure to put-put on trails to get the temps up, and then let it sit for a good 30 minutes to finalize the heat-treating process.
I figure this way... my total cost is about 20 in paint (3 cans.. @ 6.50 a pop). Plus a few hours of my time, which I dont mind because I like doing this kind of crap anyway.
If I had sent it all out to be done... I would be looking at 50-60 to PC the cans, plus 180-240 to ceramic the headers (depending on where its done...). So I will have the same look (not quite the same advantages of the true ceramic...but o well) all for about 250 dollars less.
Now I just pray it holds up! I Think after the heat cycles it should harden the paint and it will work. But again..worst case scenario I will take the headers off, clean them up and spray them with the VHT stuff which I KNOW will not burn off.
Here is a pic of the sand pig...my old DS730. I used the VHT header paint on the entire exhaust and never had a single problem with it. I actually didnt heat treat the DS stuff...but I did start/stop once it got up to temps a few times.

And hey...I would like to think im better at painting than I am baking cookies *STUPID COOKIES*
keep trying Mike, you'll make a fine wife someday.
And you better bring that SE to silver lake this year.
There is another pic so you can see the slip-on. Definitely a true Matte black, but never had a problem with flaking.
When is the rally this year? I have an internship in the spring (time will be hard to get off) but once I am done with that (end of april) I should be pretty available.
And about getting done with school..we are done after next thursday (last final). We are in our apartment down here till Dec 31st (but will probably head home a week before that date). We are heading back to our hometown Dekalb/Sycamore.
lol @ the wife comment... are you trying to convince me who wears the pants? ;)
we all know its not you that wears the pants.
So are you done for good with school?
And the rally should be in late June (I hope for my sake) We are voting on dates and late June needs all the help it can get. I can't go in early June due to my wife having baby this spring. I want more time before I take a weekend away.
http://www.raptorsource.com/forum/index.php?topic=2331.0
Well academically yes we are done. We have our internship (which counts for 12 credit hours) this spring (jan-first week of may) then we graduate may 9th. DONE AND DONE.
I should be able to make late june work. Our dunes trip (which I may or may not be going on..) is scheduled for 2nd week of june, so I will for sure vote for late june.
The guys I usually go with are not going, so unless I can hook a ride with some of the other guys the Utah-trip is out (which sucks). O well better silver lake than nothing!
So I guess no would not be the time to tell you I'll be at glamis for new years.
im up for a utah trip mid summer
my only two far trips will be silver lake next summer. Everything else will be up on my parents land.

Ya sorry I created a new thread. This thread had so many damn pictures in it.
Now to get this beast 100% back together. Pretty much its just the plastics and going over some bolts on the suspension/axle with locktite.
I also hooked up a trailtech vapor which conveniently is not working..so need to figure that one out (I hate electrical stuff...).
I have a few more things coming for xmas from the GF that should add too the SE's stunning good looks too. :)
didn't matter anyway. I couldn't see the picks. And I heard here were tit pictures too. :(
There ya go! :)
