Title: need advice on engine mod order
Post by: davetheslave on November 07, 2008, 11:23:13 AM
So I just traded my LTR with a guy for a raptor 700
Im new to raptors, so I just want to know what the best order for doing the popular mods would be.  It already has a GYTR intake, and PCIII.  I know duals are my next item to get.  I'm planning on doing cam, TB bore, piston, P&P, and a stroker crank.  And it's going to be a work in progress, so I'm wondering in what order should I do these mods to get the best benefit if I'm doing these one at a time.

IMO, I would get you exhaust. then Cam, then during the off season do the P&P, piston and stroker all at once (Since you got to take it all the way down anyway.)  The TB can be anytime.

The only Caveat I have to my suggestion is that if you install a cam before your stroker build, you may end up getting a diffrent cam when your completely done.

+1 on Colorado's advice.

and +1 on your screen name. Welcome to the site.

What year is the rappy? Might sneak new front suspension in there before major motor mods.

Pretty much lol.  I just need to get it to be faster than my buddies.  I just put a 12.5:1 and HC2 in his and that made a huge difference!  Seems like every mod you do to these is good for 3+ HP

A cheap mod, that will give you a little more top end is a 15 tooth front sprocket. $25 bucks at the most.

+1, but IMO it's more than just more top end.  It makes the lower gears more usuable in tight areas too.  The 15T is a very good mod for trail riding

I would recommend trying this combination.
Dual exhaust( barkers)
bored throttle body(kds)
11:1 stock bore piston (barkers)
CNC ported head (barkers)
our designed cam (barkers)

This will give you low to mid 70s on pump gas if you need more then go into the bottom end.

Tim, are you able to CNC off an already ported head? ???

There should be no issues doing CNC porting on top of existing porting.

But I would think you could do a swap plus cash with someone who has a stock head and make everyone happy.  Someone gets a good deal on a Bo ported head, and you get a stock head for Tim to work his magic on.  Win-win.

Krandall, I'm in the market right now for a head. Let me know if you wanna do stock plus cash for yours.  I'll be tearing down this week so that will be a decision maker for me.  I'm deploying to Afghanistan in a few weeks so gotta get this done before then.

I have brand new heads that are already done also. I just do an exchange or will sell them outright. The core charge is 450.

how much of a gain did u see with that port job? I would be very interested in doing a straight up trade (plus some cash of course) with you for my stock head with HC2 cam if the gain is worth it and if u are serious about getting the CNC head.

The duals first are a good move. The rest will depend on your abilities to do the work yourself, and your final goals. I see that you mention a stroker crank. You must consider compression ratio when going to a stroker motor. A 5 or 6 mil stroker will increase compression .7-.8, so if you are building it for a specific fuel you will need to take that into consideration. There are a couple more decisions you will have to make. The Hotcam will make a terrific gain on a stock motor, but will not be able to fully exploit a CNC head. A larger cam will not see full potential without a ported head. ::) The best thing would be to come up with some solid goals so you don't end up spending your money twice. The guys have given you good info so far...... Just kinda try to nail down some details so we can save you some money by only having to buy the parts once.

DL700 will be doing a complete KDS Racing build including;
+1 CNC head
Ferrea valves
"RJ" series cam
Beehive springs
12.5:1 piston
+3 TB.
If you like what you see in that test, the components will be available separately or in kit form. The Dynatek adjustable ignition will be an option on the kit. This will get you into matched parts with the proper ignition curve. Good luck on your build. The Raptor 700 is the best quad ever to mod, everything makes power on it. If you have any questions feel free to call

Any ballpark pricing for that combo Kenny?
Title: Re: need advice on engine mod order
Post by: Kenny on November 11, 2008, 09:48:37 PM
The price breakdown is like this:
CNC head $500
valves     $160
springs    $205
cam        $295
piston     $270
cut rocker$ 60 (for cam lobe clearance)
+3TB      $209
Total individual $1699
Kit price          $1550

The parts details are as follows:
Head- CNC ported for 1mm OS valves with 5-angle intake seat and radius exhaust seat. Assembled heads will have new seals.

Valves- Oversize Ferrea 1 pc stainless with custom tulip angle on intakes

Springs- Beehive springs with new titanium retainers and new spring seats

Cam- All new A2 tool steel billet (no core required), .517"int/.477"exh lift, custom decompression pin

Piston- corrected deck height piston made with superior 2618 material. Total Seal Maxseal gapless top ring set. Thin .043" top and second ring. 2mm Gold low tension oil rings. New ring coating to make compatible with any cylinder material.

+3 TB- Stock TB bored to 47mm (44mm is stock). Thinned throttle shaft and plate. Button head screws

This kit is available with 11:1 or 12.5:1 (your choice). You can add a Hotrods +5 stroker crank for an additional $300 over the kit price. I can supply a Barker crank as well. There are many options available for bigger motors.
