Title: Carbon Fiber Hoods
Post by: Krandall on August 28, 2008, 08:21:09 AM
Hey guys, I'm posting this up for 2 reasons...
1. How many would be interested in a Carbon Fiber hood.
2. Do you like this hood if you're interested in a CF hood?    (If not.. What style/kind are you looking for?)

I have been real close to buying that for my rappy, but its hard to justify the cost! That and my rappy is pretty ugly as shit and that would stick out like a sore thumb.

I like the idea.  But I'm not a fan of the open style grill.  I like the fins that the raptor grill has.

not sure, but they may just be an outer shell whereas you could use a the stock or custom grill gaurd underneath.

I really want that hood, but no way in hell am I gonna take off my blue CF hood and put on a black one, especially when my tank cover matches my hood. Now if some one would make a blue one for my bike I'd buy it in a heart beat.

I was sourcing material for this project last week, here's my version

I like the Raptor stock hood fins
I would like to keep my hood & insert  guards in between each hood fin
I would like the guard be mounted flush with the outside of the fins.

Does that make sense?
Title: Re: Carbon Fiber Hoods
Post by: Bert on August 29, 2008, 06:28:52 PM
Excuse my art work but this is what I mean
It would be nice if the guard had holes small enough to stop ice racing screws, similiar to 1/4 self tap sheet metal screws

I've got a stocker coming for mockup.  If you guys are serious about wanting something like this, I can make it up.  Price will be around $170 in 2x2 twill 3k carbon fiber.  ( A lot nicer quality than the one pictured which is standard weave )

THanks, Jay

I am in no way trying to harpoon anyone's idea.
But if you can find a hood for an '06 SE Raptor you'll have both the stock fins and the carbon fiber look. And it holds up to anything regular plastic would.
I wish Yamaha would make all the black plastic out of the same stuff. After 2 years and hundreds of miles in just about every type of weather it still looks new.

I would much rather see an open hood!!

i will work on one for the 06-08 style

Jay, do you guys offer that CF 700 hood in any other colors?  I like the CF look, but I think the greyish silver may not match up on my blue raptor with high gloss black accents.

Its gonna be pretty close to a stock look, maybe with a mesh grill though. From what I gathered, it sounds like alot of guys want the original look.  We'll see, I've still got it here to make changes.  The hood might get pushed back a little since this week is shot for me to work on it, but I'm gonna get rockin' on it next week and get it in for molding.

I'm a fan of the Alba one. But I think it'd be cool to see something similar to the 250r hoods. full shield basically, w a nice intake spot?
don't know how it'd look on the rappy because the 250r is more flat vs the rappy being more verticle.

If you was asking me this peels then it is hard to tell with a photo I have seen some things from a distance that look like carbon but when you get close to them they are just a sticker, the problem with printing now days is that resolution can be set so high and with 10 colour shades being printed into one area you can almost make anything look like the real thing.

I dont mind putting some things together as long as I am not going to be treading on someone's toe's.... But and this is a big BUT I don't know if my designs would be good enough to keep the balance of airflow right for the radiator.... If you guy's want me to put together something design wise what I will do is change the venting slots at the front but I I need a basic shell to work with so I would need someone to post a full frontal picture that I could then start to work with.

ok you guys are gonna have to try and picture the way this is going to look when it is on the hood as I can't do 3D stuff, with each of these you would obviously have the grill guard behind it so that it would continue to protect the rad.
Also some of the design on the 1st image would have to be changed slightly.
If these are nothing like what you was hoping for then I am sorry that I couldn't do something more creative but I wasn't 100% sure what was being asked of me.

Alright maybe I'm losing it, but I guess I'll just toss this out there.  FourWerx makes REAL carbon fiber products.  We do not use "carbon fiber coatings' or anything of that matter.  We are one of the few companies out there who believe that there is an actual use for carbon fiber/ titanium / and other lightweight products.  If you are just wanting the "carbon fiber Look" ( even though it looks nothing like carbon fiber when printed ) then go with Maier or Quadtech who are just making fake looking parts.

Now if you actually care about running the real thing, come to me as I can do that.  Quality is huge with FourWerx and you'll get nothing but that from us.  I know there is a concern with $ being spent on certain parts, but you DO get what you pay for and you can't expect to pay for mild steel and get GOLD.

My main point was just to tell you guys that I do not do the "look" thing.. I do the real thing.  There were a couple guys that were talking about carbon fiber coatings, and I just do not go that route.

Basically with a carbon fiber hood, your looking at a few ounces of savings over plastic.  Weight is weight though, and between the look and weight savings its worth the $.

Not to mention that Carbon Fibre looks the nutts too, my buddy had a Ducati that had Carbon Fibre panels all over it and the thing looked really sweet.
Only other thing I like the look of more then Carbon Fibre is Kevlar.
I know you wasn't getting on my case Fourwerx I was just pointing out that you know what has to be done with Carbon Fibre when it comes down to manufacturing as where I don't  ;)

I was a bit excited when I pm'd Busby about throwing out some design ideas.  I didn't mean to step on your toes Jay.  With the 700 being a high sales quad I beleive the market is waiting for FourWerx to raise the bar  :)

I just want to thank those of you who understand the meaning of quality and functionality in a part.  I myself do not own a raptor, but I do take great passion for the sport and installing a quality part onto my machines and those of my customers is the highest satisfaction I could recieve.  When planning out my builds I'm always taking into consideration the factors that come into play throughout my entire machine.  If I'm running a high quality exhaust, i do not want to mix in cheap other parts to take away from my build.  This is why I use only the best available products, and let me tell you.. there is nothing more eye catching than a  real carbon fiber product.

Bugsby, what kind of Duc does you friend have? I have an 08 Ducati 848 and its going thru the entire CF treatment right now.  It'll be 99% full carbon fiber bodywork, along with a full Carbon fiber/Kevlar fuel tank. :) Can't wait!!!

 Check the name
He had a Duc 916 if i remember right, he spent loads on it then sold it and went over to super moto now he just rides a naked kawa as his normal means of getting to and from work.
Your 848 should look sweet when it has been done. It is amazing how just a few carbon fibre parts make a massive change in just looks.

How much would it be for a set (Engine and swinger Skid) for a 700?

I'm gonna stay out of the line of skidplates for the time being with all of these other things going on.  If you can make me a template I can cut something out for ya as long as its flat, otherwise I'm sorry right now I just can't take that project on.

pm'd you Krandall.....

Hoods coming soon.  Only making two to start, and Krandall has first dibs.

If you guys would like to make a special group order, I can do that. With the amount of work I've got for the KTM stuff right now, Its looking like a 30 day window for any new orders unless I have openings.

I do not have any pics, but they are basically going to be factory shaped 07 style hoods made from CarbonFiber...

Pricing is set at $162.00 per hood.

Thanks, Jay @ FourWerx

Yea i know who that is, but you have to understand by you comparing my work to that of "dipped" CF coating, its an insult to me.  I do REAL stuff, not fake carbon.

I've built show quality machines time and time again, and would never get to that point with having FAKE carbon fiber.  Only real stuff here, sorry....

Sorry, I did not mean to sound like I was trying to compair you to him!!!

Was just currious if ya new him???

Please don't get me wrong I do think the stuff you are showing is awsome as well, and am still looking at all avenues.

I am not going back to cf on my rappy due to the chipping factor, so I am indeed looking hard at the product you are offering.

WAS NOT TRYING TO INSULT YOU  :(
