when i head back up to work tomorrow i will be saying goodbye for the last time to my best friend of the last 13 years.

Trigger was a stray dog that showed up at the cabin 13 years ago, she adopted our family that summer and my sister and i convinced my mom and dad that we should take her home.

she has always been able to put a smile on my face, and was always there to greet me at the door when i came to my parents house.

over the past year she has been slowly showing her age more and more (now 14) she has been going blind and deaf, not totally, yet she still plays and acts like a pup.  she now has cancer and is having a hard time breathing, she has a fever and a tumor on her foot about the size of a baseball, yet she still met me at the door when i got to my parents today.  unfortunately she is not doing too well, and to save her from suffering my parents will be putting her down on Friday. I head back up to work 300 miles away Tuesday afternoon.  I am not sure what will be harder, saying goodbye tomorrow or not having her greet me when i come here next week... ( i am man enough to admit that even typing this up has turned me into a wreck)

I am going to miss her more than i can imagine.

sorry to Oprah this place up but i needed to at least type this up as a bit of closure.

Been there bro :(

But 14 years of giving a dog a good life is something to be proud of, not sad about.

That really sucks! I love animals and this kind of thing really gets to me. Like Aaron said, be proud you gave him a nice home for 14 years...

By the looks of it it seems Trigger had a GOOD life. I love seeing a dog on a boat  No better way to come home, than to a loving, excited dog. I can't immagine the day when mine wont be there.

Stand tall, be strong and know you gave her a great 14 years.
Just a little 81hp trail bike.

Thanks Everyone.... Preddy... she loved the boat... she was always the first one in it... its gonna be weird next year not having her in there.... whenever i look at that picture it always seems like shes saying "hey guys.... this is my boat"

i am happy for her since she had a great 14 years compared to what it could have been as a stray but its still tough.

Never easy man :(

My dog showed up the same exact way. Stray, ended up being the best dog I've had. He died on my birthday 2 years ago. :( Never easy. But  knowing he had a good home and had a good life helps.

I know exactly how you feel and can relate to what your going thru.
Our family had to do the same thing with our blue merrle (sp) sheltie named Blue many years ago. She lived longer that the bread standard but started having seizures at the end. We had a big party with family and friends with her as the center of attention. We played and she had all her favourite food and treats. It was brutally hard taking her in to put down. Brings a tear to my eye now typing this.
Swore we'd never get another dog, but the wife took a liking to the Pug bread and after many years of looking we finally have another dog. Her name is Kona and she has quite the personaility.

sprinter, We have always had shelties. We had one for 17 years, it was really hard watching her go. That dog was always by my side. Even pulled me outta the water when I was little and fell off the dock.

The last 2 dogs we had were terrible, and I won't have another dog for a long time now.

Min Pincher, and a mini dachsund. CUte dogs but :bslap: little barking food to shit converters is all they are.

That sucks, I've had to put 4 of my dogs down in my life (all from old age) and every time I swear I won't get another dog because it's so hard to put them down. But I always break down and end up getting another one. I only get dogs from shelters though, feel so bad for them. I just got a 2 year old shorkie about three months ago and she's been awesome. The wife loves her, and it's nice not having to go through the chewing stage and starting with a dog that already goes outside to do her business.

But again sorry to hear about your dog, the picture on the boat is priceless!
