First experience with the new nitrous kit

Not a good weekend for me and nitrous to say the least...(sorry, long story below)  :jaw:

To start things off, I leave my parents place in Gladwin and head to the dunes around 8:30...and pull into Appletree around 10:45 am on Saturday (I went to their place the night before because the dunes are about 4 hours from my house and only about 2 or so from theirs). I grab my bottles and walk up the hill into Appletree and the guys behind the counter says they don't fill nitrous there.  So no big deal, I know that DAR/duneland does.  So I walk across the street and the girl at the counter asks if my bottles are for "NOS" and she started laughing (no, they are for me to piss in you dumb whore) then she tells me they are out....I asked if any other local shops sell it, and she told me to go talk to the owner.  He tells me that Port City Racing in Muskegon is the next closest place.
So I go out to my truck and give them a call, they fill nitrous but they aren't in Muskegon, they are all the way down in Coopersville (exit 16 off of I-96) .  So after going back and forth for a few minutes, I decided to make the drive...my whole point of making the trip to the dunes on Saturday was to test the nitrous, so what is another few hours on the road.

130 miles and 2.5 hours later (and $32 lighter for having both of my 2.5 lb bottles filled)...I pull back into the dunes parking lot.  Air down the tires, throw my flags on and drive out to the drag strip.  I grabbed my gas tank that I just filled up with 110 octane ($6 per gallon), and throw in my little hand pump (need that so I can fill up the little fuel bottle mounted next to the coolant bottle).  After about 10 minutes, I gave up...the pump was cracked, so I couldn't get it to pump at all.  So I undo the bracket on the fuel bottle, and spill about 2 gallons of the 110 while trying to fill that little bitch up and burn the piss out of my knuckles on the hot header pipes in the process.

So now I'm all set , put the nitrous bottle in the brackets, hook up the hoses, open the valves and remove the air filter and give it a few quick shots (with the quad turned off) to pull fuel up to the NPFI.  Everything looks good, but I hear a little hissing coming from the air intake tube...sounds like nitrous is bleeding by the solenoid in the smart box a little bit.  Not a big deal, very faint sound so can't be much gas.  So I put everything back together, and head out to the flats to make my first run.

First pass (just running by myself, just wanted to see how it felt/acted), I find out how big of a pain in the ass that spray button is.  It is mounted on my grip so it basically sits right where the pad of my index finger normally sits...sounds like it will be easy just to hit the spray button when you want, but it is a PITA.

Second pass, line up with a few banshees...dump the clutch in second at WOT like normal and hit the spray button, and the quad stands straight up.  So I have to back out and let it come back down, I threw it in third and hit the button...the front end floated up a little, but with my big ass leaning forward...I didn't have to let up, just rode the wheelie out.  I beat the one banshee, but the second one had a few lengths on me.

Second race, Same banshees plus a YFZ, Ds650, outlaw 525 and a few dirt bikes...guy on the bike looks over, shakes his head and called me a cheater while pointing at the bottle ..what a dickhead.  Had the same standing up issue in second gear, but was able to feather it a little and keep my momentum...ended up pulling past both banshees and all of the quads/bikes.  The guy on the banshee pulled up to ask me what I had done, then saw the bottle and asked how big of a shot that was because he smoked me the first race and I had 4-5 lengths on the second.

After those two races, I headed back to my truck just to see how everything looked.  Everything looked good.  So I head back over to the strip, and give it another go...good launch, front stays down, but both banshees pull past me, and so did the outlaw 525 and it didn't pop while I was shifting like it had on the previous runs.  Hmm...maybe I closed the bottle and forgot to open it back up before heading back out.  Reach down, try to open up the bottle...and hear a little "pop".   ???  Get off the quad, and try to close the bottle...and the valve just spins, try to open it up...just spins.

So I pulled back over to the truck and took everything back apart...pulled the filter off and hit the button, no spray.  Hmm, must have F'ed the valve up somehow...annoyed, but whatever  ::).  So I threw the other bottle in, hooked all the hoses up and went back to the strip.

First race, lifted in second right off the line, and floated a bit in third...beat all the quads besides one of the guys from Silver Lake Forum with a crazy fast YFZ (yfzduner).  Go back to the line and the guy on the Outlaw comes up to talk because I raced him a few times a few months back, and wanted to BS.  He wanted to run me without the spray because we were close earlier in the summer when he was stock and now he had the big 3.  So we ran once, and he beat me by a few lengths (me 240lbs, him 150 or so).  Next race, he wants me to run his buddy with a built 450r...good launch, good run, beat everybody besides yfzduner again, but my quad kind of fell on its face at the end of the run.  On the way back, I hit the button...nothing.

So again, go back to the truck and hit the button with the air filter off to see if it is spraying.  I hear a little hiss, but no fog, and no cold fittings like there should be.  Check all of the connections, check all of the fittings, check that I have fuel, check to make sure the bottle is on and the solenoid is opening...and hit the button again.  A hiss, but no fog.  So I pulled the bottle back out (Eric aka yfzduner pulls up to see whats going on) and we both look it over for a few...he grabs the bottle and said it feels awfully light (he runs a 2.5 lb bottle on his quad too).  So I opened up the valve to see if anything sprays out...it hisses for about 15 seconds then tapers off to nothing.

We both come to the conclusion that I drove 130 miles, wasted 2.5 hours, burned 1/4 tank of fuel in my truck, and paid $32 for a few ounces of nitrous and some compressed air.  The guy at Port city said that they had a new bottle, only sold 9 lbs so far...so they had plenty.     So either they intentionally F-ed me, the guy didn't know how to fill the bottles, or their bottle was basically empty when they filled mine, causing me to get a bunch of air and very little nitrous.

Eric offered to let me use his bottle for the rest of the day because his bottle bracket cracked earlier, but I was too damn frustrated at that point to even mess with it anymore.  So I did a few laps around the dunes, and almost rolled my quad off of the last hill in the directionals because it was so peaked and I was driving too fast because I was pissed.  I raced a few more times with no spray, and wanted to choke a kid on a YFZ because he didn't understand the concept of "waiting for the flag to drop before you leave"...he tried getting the jump by a second or so every time, but I still was able to run him down.  As I'm sitting there, some turd on a ragged ass banshee takes off near me and douches me and my truck with sand...  At that point, I said screw it...loaded my truck up and drove back to my parents place before I shot somebody or blew my quad up.

So overall...one of the most annoying weekends I have ever had at Silver Lake.  And I have a list of things I need to do this week:

-Move my fuel bottle under the front right fender....trying to fill it up where it is now isn't going to work (next to the coolant bottle, tucked up into the frame).
-get rid of the "spray button" and switch to a WOT switch.
-call boss noss and see what needs to be done with the bottle with the bad valve
-talk to them about the hissing sound coming from the smart box/intake tube
-find a good place to get my bottles filled or just buy a filling station for myself
-sign the guys at Port City Racing up for all kinds of gay or farm animal porn spam emails
-find a +6 swingarm because the +3 I have now (which I bought from somebody on modded raptor who said it was a +4 and I only realized it wasn't last weekend) isn't going to cut it with the nitrous.
-drink a bunch of beer and forget last weekend

Sorry for writing a book here, just wanted to share my "awesome experience" with the nitrous

TWISTER

Yep that sucked but its a good weekend if your stuffs not broke. Had me worried for a second that something bad happened.

Sorry to hear that...

But believe me, i know exactly how you felt. Sounded like my last 3 trips to the track and my last trip to Hatfield and Mccoy. Minus the nitrous and all the banshees

Sounds like you own a monster though

That sucks Kyle :( Atleast you know that you need a arm now instead of finding out in the spring.  I bet its a wild ride when you hit the button huh?

Should have called or PM me i was in Grand Rapids and thought and heading up that way to check out the racing and try new tires(Truck) in sand..

Dang, that sucks it was such a crappy weekend. I hven't dealt TO much with Boss Noss, but what I have. They have been stand up guys. So, I'm more than certain they'll get you figured out ;)

What shot were you running? (sorry if I missed that in the story)

Does it require a velcro seat now?

Hopefully by next spring, I will be at the point of just switching bottles and trying to hang on...we shall see.

Livingmylife93, definitely not a monster...just a 3 mod with a little spray to help keep up until I tear into the motor.

Krandall, I'm running a 20 shot for now...that is what Jeremy recommended on the stock piston.  I didn't have enough juice to make enough passes to really figure out what I'm doing...it was definitely a lot faster, but I learned really quick that I can't launch and race like I used to, gotta learn a new style now.

Ryan, I would love to be able to stick with the +3, but I will probably have to go to a +6...especially if I tear into the motor.  I'm going to work on my launch a lot next spring and see if I can keep the swingarm I have now for the time being, maybe with some rear shock adjustment and some straps on the front I will be able to keep it down a little better.  It just sucks that I have to wait until April to get back out there to try.

I'm going to give Boss a call tomorrow to see what the deal is with my bottle and the small leak, they seemed like a good company so far...so I'm sure they will stand behind their products.

Well that sounded like a blast.... :tonto:

Out of curiousity, who made the +3 and is it tube or ladder style?

Its a Ladder Style from SLC

That's the one...it was great for a 3 mod, but maybe a little short for the spray.  I'm going to try to make it work with a little more throttle control and different seating position, but I have a feeling I will need to upgrade.

Sorry for my tardiness in checking the board lately. Been real busy here getting snowmobile seats out. Kyle, give me a call tomorrow and we'll get you taken care of. We test every system that we send out, pressure test and bottles, so I'm surprised at the problems you've had. None-the-less, I'll get you taken care of, no problem.

Fix the leak where ever it is....your bottle will last much longer

you should have never attempted to run the system with a leak of any kind
