The Carlisle tires on my buddy's Raptor toyhauler blew out this weekend. He called to warn me.
I already know Carlisle are universally renown for being crap but it got me to thinking about the tires on my hauler. They are Highwaymaster brand - a brand that, apparently, doesn't exist on the Internet.
How concerned should I be about that?

As long as you have trailer rated tires and they aren't dry rotted, your in good shape. Do a pretrip inspesction and make sure you have the right tire pressure in them too. A tire with low tire pressure on a long distance pull equals busted belts and blow outs.

A good rule of thumb but not always the case, and somewhat dangerous to suggest - especially when it comes to Carlisle brand trailer tires.

Dang which part did I mess up on? I usually spend around $15,000-20,000 a year on freak'n tires.

I think the 2 spares for my little enclosed carhauler are Highwaymaster's and they are new. Never used Carlisle tires.

I might just be lucky but the Carisle tires on my trailer have never blown up...We wore out the original factory tires and I had to replace one with a Denman tire one time and that exploded later, so now it's back to all Carisles...Only time they go flat is when it picks up a damn screw.

Every brand of tyre can have failures, especially as the mileage or age starts getting high.
The rubber is aged by a combination of heat, cold, & time, as well as wear due to improper alignment, under or over inflation, & the kind of roads they are driven on.

Whatever your tyres, the lesson is pretty simple.
1/ Get your vehicle wheel alignment & ballancing done on a regular basis
2/ When this is done, get the tyre technician to check the tyres for any structural weakness or flaws (bulges in sidewalls or miss-shapen or  uneven tread patterns are a dead give-away)
3/ Check tyre inflation & look for wear patterns that would indicate under/over inflation & correct the tyre pressure to suit
(under inflated tyres wear on the edges, over inflated wear the centre)
Should be checked before every trip, & look for any possible flaws as per 2/ at the same time
4/ Try to plan your route to avoid rough roads or driving where you know there will be a high likelyhood of driving over kerbs, large rocks or uneven ground.

Tyres are a major cost for any truck or large vehicle, just as much as for a fast car or even your quad.

Look after what you have, it will save you plenty in the long run
