So I was about to put a new chain on and I grabbed my rear sprocket and there is play front to back.  It's not a lot, but im sure this isnt good?  Do these hubs wear out?  Or is it possible the splines on my axle are shot?  Blah, sometimes i hate this thing.

can't say I've had play in my sprocket. when you wiggle it, do you see the sprocket hub moving and not the axle?

If so. I'd go to the sprocket hub before I point at the axle.

So ive got the axle out, and there is definitely play in the sprocket hub.  But how the hell do you get the sprocket hub off the axle?!? Service manual says theres a circlip, but i sure dont see one.  The microfiche doesnt even list one.  what am I missing?  The picture below shows the difference.  Any help would be appreciated!

Theres one in there. You have to slide the axle out part way to the left (looking from the back,a nd then hit the sprocket hub to move it to the right. There should be a brass colored circlip in there.

that #19 in the bottom pic is actually an oring that seals between the bearing carrier and the sprocket hub.

thanks, yeah, that circlip wasnt on any microfiche and it didnt come with the new hub, so i just reused the old one, it still went in tight, so should be ok...

Oh yeah, several times.  I was thinking of getting longer bolts and lockwashers, but i dont know if thats a good idea....  Red loctite has been holding well for the last couple rides though...

I've got the same problem, I think it's due to water and dirt corroding the splines.  I'm gonna try loctite 660 which should take up the play, otherwise it's a new axle and hubs $$$ :'(  The only thing I'm worried about is whether It'll come apart if required.

you totally sure it isn't the whole axle wiggling right? I thought this once too, and it was my carrier bearings.

I put the axle in a vice and put the hubs back on to check, and yup, there's play :(

I bought a new hub and there's still a little bit of play, so either my axle is worn or i'm just wondering if there is a little from teh factory and i didnt notice it before....

Can someone with a nice newish Rappy check for us please, just put the park brake on and grab hold of the sproket and see if it moves on the axle.  Would be very greatful if someone could do this.

Thanks,
Pete

I'm 99% sure that there's no play in my sprocket hub. But I'll check when I get home.
