Captain I'll be no more;/ But I will eat and drink, and sleep as soft/ As captain shall: simply the thing I am/ Shall make me live."

This line comes from The Father, his 1887 play about the tension between ex-military protagonist The Captain and his wife Laura. The play appeared in Strindberg: Five Plays alongside Miss Julie, another Strindberg rumination on the sexes which contains the line: "Love is a game we play when we get time off from work."
