I have been riding my raptor and in 5th gear i have noticed that  it is skipping gear. It changes all gears perfect up and down. Its like at 85 kays in 5th gear that this seems to happen. All other gears are fine. Its like it changes down gear but i know it isnt cause it isnt reving. Its a jumping or skipping. I changed oil to a Maxima SynBlend 4 10w40w. It seems to have started after i did this. Gradually getting worse after 2 rides with new oil in it. Has anyone else had this problem with 5th gear in the raptors before. Raptor has done 900 kays according to dash. Any help would be much appreciated.

check your oil filter for any metal shavings, ig present, you have a problem as you assumed.

Yet, what you are describing could be a clutch slippage, or could be not

I agree, sounds like slippage. If it was a gear, I would think you would hear at crunch at that speed, if it jumped down a gear. Check clutch cable tension too.

Ranger

It's probably rev limiter...Sounds about right where it is on a stock ignition.

85 kays....................................... is this speed unit?

next time use mph as it is the common language here

85 KAYS  is about 53 mph  (Not the rev limiter by the way)

I thought that was shortspeak for 8500 rpms which is close to the rev limiter on 5th right?

PROXT

If clutch was slipping it would be revving wouldnt it. It dont do that at all. Where abouts is the speed limiter plug situated. Might try and disconnect that and plug it back in.

Ranger

Do you have any electrical mods (PCIII or V, Dobeck, Trinity, whatever)? It could be a bad map somewhere. As for speed sensor plug, it's at the bottom of the motor next to the shifter I thought? I haven't really messed with mine...

PROXT

No mods at all. Everything is stock.

Ranger

It might be that you're in too high of a gear, it actually sounds like when I used to short shift on tight trails and I'd end up in 4th or 5th gear while at 15 mph...It'd feel like something was banging on the side of the quad ("skipping").

PROXT

Its never happened before though. Just drained the oil and checked filter. Everything just like brand new. No metal shaving or anything in there. Its got me beat.

Ranger

Yeah, it didn't happen a lot at first either but it depends on throttle really, if I let off the throttle enough it would go away just wouldn't pull as hard. After I got my tach on I was able to read the engine speed better and the sweet spot is around 3rd gear.

PROXT

I have just noticed after giving it another oil change that it says with filter that they tale 1.85 litres. After adding this much it is only just regestering on the dipstick. This could be the problem. Not enough oil.

Ranger

The Raptor has an oil sump system so not all of the oil is always in the crankcase...You have to run it for a minute...And I always just put 2 qts in- 1 in oil tank and 1 in crank. Never had a problem and it's always at least 3/4 up

Kamakazi

was the oil you put in JASO MA certified?  sound like the stuff you put in wasnt wet clutch friendly.  when diagnosing a problem, always go back to the last thing you did which in this case was the oil, and i know there can definately be a problem with some synthetic oil and the clutch disks.
