So i had my exhaust powder coated a few weeks ago, and it flaked off the pipe where it comes outta the head. So i took it up to the guy who powder coated it. he said the powder coat was good to a 1000 degrees,so he checked the pipes with infrared heat gun. It was almost a 1000 degrees at idle . Is this normal for a quad's exhaust to be that hot? and also anyone else with powder coated exhaust have any trouble like this? :help:

I am thinking the dude is a major idiot. That is 200 degrees away from being able to melt aluminum. But I could be completely wrong but I sure as hell hope.  ???

i would think so. 1000 degrees would melt the plastic nearby. I hope it is wrong

The exhaust near the head will reach well over 1000 degrees.
Just a little 81hp trail bike.

wow, wasn't aware of that. I guess that is the point at where it is the most restricted.

I am no expert but a header in a normal car can only reach 1000 if there is something wrong with the car. I would think that it would apply to a quad as well unless it is burning hotter with more compression like a racing quad or there is just something wrong with it.

Mad Dog

Nope, nothing wrong with 1k degree temps near the head.  I've seen guys tune their bikes using EGT's higher than that.

Krandall

I don't know if I'd trust Powder Coating on a header ???

I guess.. I didn't know there was such a thing as "high temp pc'ing" either though..

i dont know the whole ordeal but the guy said the pcing was good up to 1000 degrees, and devan got ahold of him today and talked to him and he said to bring it up and he'd figure out what temp it was running. so he brought it up before we went riding and he shot the headers, he said it was almost 1000 degrees right out of the tube and i think 200 at the point where it meets the frame, and around 80 at the cans.

russ-russ

That sounds about right.  That is why they use ceramic coating on the header and only use powder coat on the cans.

exentix

i think the guy told him that the ceramic coating is only good to 1100 degrees, and those temps i posted were all on idle. if you ride for a few hours id imagine they were getting way over that.

the guy told me if he would have known they got that hot he wouldnt have powder coated the headers. I thought i seen other people that had the headers powder coated on here. my bad  how will hight temp paint hold up on the headers?

Plasti-Kote HI-TEMP Paint

I did 3 coats and cured in the oven per instructions. It seems to be holding up pretty good, I have 2 solid rides on it so far.. I think the test will come this summer once it starts seeing mud/water.

If you get the VHT header paint, and follow the instructions (which includes baking the painted parts in an oven 3 times at 3 different temperatures), I've heard it works really well.  If you aren't able to bake it, it is only so-so.

edit: Krandall beat me to it...
