Honestly if you have the coin I would get a liter bike from the get go. I had teh CBR for 6 months and upgraded.


FYI I had to get rid of the R1 before I killed my self.....seriously! I hit 192MPH the week before I sold it. Wheelies were no problem at over 100MPH. You better have good self controll!

DON'T GET THE 600!!  Here is why, the 600's are fast as shit and super nimble but you are a big guy.  All of the bikes to include the 750 and 1000 are smaller these days.  You on that 6 would kinda feel like you are riding a pocket bike.  The 750 and the 1000 use just about the same frame so either of those bikes will pretty much feel the same.  I'd recommend the 750 if this was your first bike ever riding.  The 600 would be super fun for about 30 days and then you'd get used to it.  Since you aren't a true beginner I'd recommend either the 750 or Grand.  I'd really be leaning toward the grand depending on how agressive a rider you are.  If you ride the piss outa your raptor and you know that is the kind of blood you have then get the Grand.  That way, you will never have to upgrade.  I'd even go to say that since you are comfortable with ATVs/motorcycles in general, you wouldn't have any problems with your throttle hand getting you in trouble.  GO for the GRAND!  :thumbs:

after reading some of the comments im starting to lean toward the 750, because i dont want to be hassled with buying a 600 then a month later want to upgrade so i think i will get the 750 since hopefully it will fit me better and i dont want the 1000 because all it does is give more top end and i dont plan on going over 200(but maybe that will change with time haha) also i heard the kawasaki bikes are heavier and probably wouldnt handle as good....is this true? thanks

The 750 would be a good choice, but I would be very careful.

Forgot to tell you my bike experience.

Started with a ZX-9R.. Totaled it in KY. (My fault, owned by a curve with gravel in it)  
Next was Gixxer 750.. Learned all of the cool tricks etc on it. I was in Germany with it.
Next was a Gixxer 1000.. Best ever!  Had to sell it when I got back to the states lest kill myself. (similar to Preddy's story)
Next KX 250- Crashed and burned several times...
And now Raptor 700- Thought the 4 wheels would help but I've crashed and burned more on this than the 2fitty!  4wheels= false sense of security!  :thumbs:

R1...Or if you are worried about going with a liter bike from the get go.... Suzuki SV650 is great little v-twin sportbike. But not too fast on top end.  :thumbs:  Though, It is not top speed that kills. It is a corrupt right hand. ;)

I had the FZ1 old man version R1. Sport standard, Tuned for low end, not speed. Great wheelie bike, I bet I miss it a little this spring.  You could also check out it's little brother, Yamaha fz6. Great little bike for less cash.

i know, i had a bad crash when i was younger and had to get plastic surgery on my nose because the bottom part (skin on nostrels....how ever you spell it) got ripped and my nose was loose haha so im not the type of guy to just give her shit the first time i ride something. so i take the time to get use to it.

The GSXR is about the only bike I have'nt ridden. But I do have a 03 636 and the handeling is second to none! I can wip this little thing around like its my job. But that comes at a price of comfort. I did like the larger tire and overall larger bike "feel" of the R1. That bike was just flat out stable.


If you plan on riding two peeps, get a big bike. I use to take me and the old lady on a hour or two ride in the county when I had my R1, but now that I have a 636 20-30 minutes is about all I can do. Just not fun. But you cant beat tittys in your back...lol....i'll take a sore back for that anyday.

the is a reason that the GSX-R 750 is the only bike left in that class (especially since it's an AMA race division).  It has dominated that market since it was introduced.  perfect balance of power and control IMO.  If I went back to street bikes, I'd go get one instantly.  And Honestly I hate suzuki offroad products, so that's how much they impress me.

Based off experience:

The bikes above I spent a lot of time on. Out of those 10 bikes 4 of those were wrecked and 2 of my closest friends passed away. Riding a bike is a dangerous sport on the streets.

I think everyone should have the pleasure of knowing what it feels like going 165+mph, and knowing what it feels like to dive in and out of corners at deals gap... It can be fun when no one gets hurt.

I would get 07+' Yamaha R1 , 03+' Gixxer 1000, CBR 954 , or the Kawasaki zx10.. Don't get me wrong i liked the 600rr and the r6 but I feel if your going to make the investment you might as well spend an extra 1000-2000 more on a larger bike. No matter what size you get your going to be in control of the throttle. Just be careful and ride within your limits!

State Farm insurance is dirt cheap on bike coverage. It should be around 60-130 for a one liter bike a month (depending on your driving record) for full coverage.

Are you totally set on a SS bike?  I just got back on a street bike after 10 years and I'm on a Kawasaki Z1000.  It's a "naked" bike, like the FZ1 or Bandit, but with even less plastic.  Maybe I'm just getting old, but I think the Z is dead sexy.  Plus it has a more upright seating position and uses regular handlebars, so you can easily change the riding position to suit you.  The naked bikes are usually cheaper all the way around, I picked up my '04 from a dealer this past October with 2900 miles on it for only $4500, and insurance is only like $240/year!  Of course I'm 37 and have a spotless driving record.  No matter what bike you choose, I highly recommend taking a rider safety course, even if you think it's gay or just for squids, there is a lot of valuable information to be picked up there.  Around here, they offer three levels: beginner they provide the bikes and teach fundamentals, intermediate builds on the basics and adds some advanced techniques, and of course advanced works on high level riding skills.

I have had some two-wheeled toy ever since I was about 12 years old.  Mostly dirt bikes but I bought my first street bike at 21, it was a 93 ZX7.  Rode it for 3 years and sold it (biggest mistake ever) and went without a street bike for a few months and then bought a 93 CBR900RR.  Fun bike but the ZX would handle circles around it.  Sold it when I bought my house and haven't had a street bike since then.  Then I saw one of the members here post about his Z1000 and it really caught my eye.  I started looking for one and found this a few months later.

I've done a few things here and there with a few more to come, but here it is now.
