What do you do for a living?

I was just thinking about all the jobs I've had in my life and was wondering what you guys are currently doing for a job and if you like it. I've had a few odd and in jobs when I was younger in high school  like I worked at Target, BlockBuster Music (when they where still around), a couple of grocery stores, and a cook (when I was 15). After high school I became a Fiber Optic Engineer leading to having my own contracts with Cox cable, Multimedia Cable, Prime Cable, Comcast Cable, and a few others I can't think of. That career took me all over the country. I lived in Santa Monica, Las Vegas (my favorite), Westminister Co., Vale Co., Lewisville Tx., Woodstock Ga., and Daytona Beach. I really loved it. I was 20 back then and did that for a few years till I got burnt out. Made lotsa money, but was young and blew it all. I sold all my equipment (11 bucket trucks, tools, and my contracts), and moved back to Oklahoma. I sat around a year and played playstation while I was thinking of what to do. I ended up going to truck driving school and got my CDL. That was about 10 years ago. I now own a small trucking company. It does well for me even though trucking is one of the hardest bull$hit jobs out there. I'm also a co-owner of a small paintless dent repair business. I was in a wicked wreck back in 2003 in California. I was down for better part of a year and instead of sitting around I figured I would learn something new. Thats when I took up paintless dent repair. Since then I've drove one of my trucks in the winter and fixed hail damaged vehicles in the summer. Its been a good year in the paintless dent repair business this year so I haven't jumped into a truck yet, hopefully I won't. I still don't know what I wanna be when I grow up, but I do know that I would love to go back to college.

Which leads to my question, what do you do for a living? Do you like it? If you could choose any career you wanted what would it be? I always wanted to be a gun for hire, but I'm silly like that.

I am a SAN(Storage Area Network) Architect.  Translation: Computer geek!

Unfortunately, there is no "direct" training for it.  A good network background would help.  Knowledge of the storage frames all depends on the vendor specific training provided.

Do I like it?  Hell yeah!  The money is REAL good.  The downside is I am stuck having to be near the big cities.

Hey gunz, I used to do paintless dent removal. Contracted with 6 different dealers. Hailstorms= $ That, and detailing, rock chips, gold plating close to 5 years.

Then

Went to work for Wal Mart Distribution as Quality Assurance for double that. (number cruncher)Did that for 5 years until 2003. That job is now done by computer. Lost it the day we found out we were having our first child.  My own laziness. "I am the weakest link, goodbye" Kind of like "here is your 5 year service award, now GTFOML!" And a  few in between until:

Which leads me to my current job. Not the most prestigious of careers, but I make a great living for my family. (and my hobbies)
I work for Direct Mail Marketing company...better known as Junk Mail. If  you got a Note pad with your name personalized on each sheet, and address labels in the mail, chances are, my people produced it. I started on the floor, regular production. I am naturally meachanically inclined, so the job was/is a snap. My bad Grammar, bad spelling OCD helps as well. Within three months,  I was running a shift of 15 people, 30 high speed b&w printers. 150 sheets per minute. Your home printer is around 15-20) I now run all shifts with help, on whole new format printers. But, most of the time you can find me surfing over at my High Res digitsl 4color printer. Nexpress, now owned by Kodak. Those people I ignored as youth were right when they would tell me I needed to apply myself.

In High School 88-92 I worked as a dishwasher, moving hay and moving water pipes. Two weeks after I got out of High School I joined the Air Force as a Munitions Systems Specialist and I would not change a thing. We build every bomb that falls off of the planes you see.

You're a SAN architect? SAN is the SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!  8)  but spendy ::)

I started out when I was 16. Worked at a Pamida (for you east/west coasters its like a Wal-Mart) for nearly 3 years. I graduated and I went and worked @ menards for another 3 years while I was going to school. (home improvement store). After that, I graduated college, I did my internship for a local Wireless Internet Company Genesis Wireless. Probably one of the sweetest jobs in IT I've had.. I got to do everything. We took tech support style calls, I had to call vendors for product information, schedule stuff w/ vendors to see their products, order product, We got to go out in the field to do support for customers. We would do the wireless installs. an antenna on the roof basically pointed to the tower where the broadcast signal was coming from. And the best part was climbing the multiple towers we were on top of... Most were water towers. ranged from 110' to 150' for the water towers way cool. The tallest tower we had to climb was for a local radio station. The tower was 350' our equipment was at the 300' mark. you could see for MILES!!!!!!! nothin like climbing up a tower w/ all your gear (30-50lbs worth) strapped to your back climbing straight up. clamping off just hanging letting your feet dangle, trusting your equipment and just soaking in the view.
I currently work (friday was my 3 year!) @ a company in St. Paul Minn called Securian. They do Group Life Insurance plans for larger companies (Pepsi, Oscar Meyer, and Good Year are 3 off the top of my head we have) We're a private based company so the stock market doesn't affect us all to much. Another Record Profit year we found out 2 weeks ago. I work in their information security department. We do quite a bit from, helping implement new applications, setting up the user ID's of new employees to locking down the network as in.. we have multiple areas, and we need to make sure people can see data that they need to see and not stuff that they aren't supposed to see. It was rather boring at first. But The more I've got to see, it's just been getting better and better, I'm the pup there, the next person closest to me is 47 years old.... I'm ranked #2 on my team right under my boss.  I've worked hard to out shine my team I'm on to hopefully step up to a management position. Lovin every minute of it.

Krandall, your computer geek history sounds as bad as mine.  I have nearly 18 years in it and have done pretty much everything except database engineering.

I was an IT Manager (my schooling was business management).  I got out of management because of drama, not allowed to dig into technology anymore and the money was not there.

JMO, with your security backgound, you might want to look into SAN security which is currently an emerging part of the SAN world.

Yeah, I have been a geek for a long time, tore apart/fixed my first PC when I was 12. Processor fan on our 386 burnt out. Causing the dust bunny infested pc to over heat and take out the motherboard and processor.  :batman:

been hooked ever since!
