To answer your question, Louis XIV, king of France, who preferred IIII over IV, ordered his clockmakers to produce clocks with IIII and not IV, and thus it has remained that way even today with several watchmakers.

I think I remember reading that now.......Isn't there a theory that the king was possibly dyslexic and therefore confused 4 and six (IV and VI)??
