actually I was talking FOR the average user (I personally would NEVER run that junk)

Dell, HP, etc use bottom line parts in their "average" machines

Dell makes some good stuff too (XPS aint bad, Poweredge servers are decent)

they keep the price down by using shit quality parts, plain and simple
cheap stuff, and HORRIBLE service!

I didn't experience anything bad. Hmmm.  Maybe because I upgraded just about everything you can get on it. that might be.

Eric, this place is just across town from me and I've had zero issues with any of the refurbished products.

Probably not "Top of the Line" equipment, but perhaps suitable for your needs at a good price.  And if you want me to get "eyes on" any of their laptops, let me know

Nope, thank you though. This was E's thread, I was just adding my 2 cents on my experience with Dell. Hefe disagrees. No biggie.

You didn't recommend anything Hefe...?  ???

XPS isn't made for your average home user. All people like my wife, mom, sis-inlaw ect is browse the internet and use microsoft word, you don't need anything fancy, nothing high end processing or the such.

My wife has run an HP for 4 years. Solid. Her sis has an HP, been a very good computer as well..

i used to love hp, but both my mothers and brother HP screens starting fading out and sometimes gets really blurry and u have to keep messing with it to get it right. I want something more quality.

My mom only uses her cpu for email so i want the best bang for the buck. Ive had toshiba before and it was just a bulkier heavier laptop so i was never fond of it (had a shitty grahpics card too)
hmmmmm

I can recommend this one
I have bought over 20 of them so far..
I mark em up and resell them..
haven't has a single one come back yet!

LOVE THE SONY!

I really like the sony..
just feel more stout
ya know

Hefe

all decent "throw aways"

but there are reasons that another computer with the same "specs" costs twice as much
better quality parts

most companies make a cheap model and a good model

a $500 laptop will never be a great computer, but if it does what you need it to do, get it..
just don't trust your important data to it
back up your stuff on a thumb (or external) drive
and wait for the big crash

the subject of this post is "what is a good brand"
as a rule, I like Sony (the ones in the 800 to 1000 price range have been good to me)
I have purchased quite a few of them 20-30 or so
no major failure yet

but again...
if it will do what you want.. get it

I am more than satisfied with our Leapster. No problems other than Dora having a spanglish issue.

I don't need a gaming pc so I think I can keep it under 1k.  I've seen some great deals for around 500-700 for a good running pc.

This is a smokin laptop.
