How do I jump?

3rd is a better jumping gear than 4th. 3rd gets the front end in the air easier and u wont bog if its a bigger hill. Like you said, 4th doesnt have as much pull. If your not 1/2-3/4 of the way through 4th when u jump, you will nose dive. If you are towards the bottom of 4th, just shorten your approach a little and gas it hard in 3rd.

If you're preloading the suspension sitting down, make sure you stand up as your rear tires leave the ramp. It you stand up too late, the rear spring will unload late and buck the quad forward.

"Blip" the throttle on small to medium jumps. For bigger air/hill jumps, its important to carry alot of momentum. You want to leave the jump with as much speed as possible, without bogging at all. Kinda like a drag race, and the finsh line is past the lip of the ramp!

these fellow riders have great ideas on how you should jump..

For me its the jump,i mostly stand when im on the track. But depending on the size of the jump will depend on what gear and speed you need to carry. This is funny but even some jumps can be made in 1st gear.

To be honest telling you how to jump wont do you any good, you need to see it.May i suggest finding a mx track and find some pro or intermediate riders and watch them. Then ask questions..Im not gonna lie to you there are some out there that will be A HOLES to ya ,but theres some good riders out there that would be happy to help...GOODLUCK!

For the most part it seems like there are a lot of factors associated with my long jump failures. I have a stock rear that I havent serviced in 2 years and hasnt been set up for my weight, possible problem there. I do agree that I may be releasing my preload early ( im just waiting for the sex jokes )  and that may be why my quad seems to "buck" me. Also im low in 4th making this jump. Screwing up in high 4th on my quad will lead to some big boo boos so maybe I just have to suck it up and go for broke.

But the slightly off putting thing is I watched a man die a few weeks back jumping an area ive jumped many times. Veeeeerrrrrry long downhill landing, youre in air long enough to do next years taxes. He landed back tires first nose way high and when it rolled end over end blunt force trauma did the rest. So im a bit nervous now that I see how lethal the jumps im getting into are.

I also wanted to show, this is a third gear "blip" jump, but I dont have the speed to clear the 25-35 ft (roughly) that I was aiming for. ( the downhill is just out of frame ) As you can see all is well as im coming down even, so im thinking the preload and low 4th gear are large factors in the longer jump.

Thank you everyone for your input, its much appreciated!

Any time we do riding.. ANY TIME!!!! you're putting yourself at risk. There's always a chance of dieing, Freak accidents happen. The only thing you can do, is wear propper protection/equipment to help avoid some of them (Helmet, chest protector, boots ect..)

I highly recommend a Leatt Brace too, if your gonning to be doing BIG jumps.  You definatley still can end up in the ER, but hopefully your neck and head are still pointed in the right direction

Krandall and colorado...ever the optimists....  They are right though. Trial and error is how you learn. Just don't let the errors make you a vegetable, or worse...
