So it looks like I need to change the seal behind my front sprocket and need to know how difficult it is going to be. Has anybody got any pics? What tools will I need?

Peelz

not sure...is that a case splitter? :help:

Do you have the service manual?

If not, we have it here: http://www.raptorsource.com/forum/index.php?topic=126.0

Why yes we gots teh pics!  I did this a while back.  The only hard part is digging out the old seal.  It's recessed so deep you can't grab it.  I forgot how I got it out.  I think I used a tiny allen wrench to dig it out.

Yes, it's dirty.  And my chain guard is long gone courtesy of cheap sprockets and chain.  This one is Renthal and D.I.D. I think.  X-ring chain, that's all I remember.  It's taking the new chain a lot longer to stretch.

If you remove this nut before the chain, you can use your brakes to keep the sprocket from spinning.  You need to bend the little tabs out of the way to get the socket on.  I don't know what size this is.  It's big.  Don't know what I used last time.  My metrics don't go that high and it's larger than 1 1/4"

This is more for show, it will probably be easier to remove the master link closer to the back of the bike due to better access.

Chain off, nut is on finger tight.

Remove nut to expose tab.

Remove tab thing, whatever you call it.  Sprocket will basically fall into your hand at this point.

Sprocket off exposing retainer.

Retainer off, dirty old seal exposed.

D.O.S. removed.  Nice and clean inside.  Whew!  This part was a pain.  I had to dig the seal out with makeshift stuff.  Be careful not to gouge any metal surfaces.

New seal installed

Retainer reinstalled.

My shiny new sprocket.

New vs. old.

And for some reason I quit taking pictures at this point.  Too bad I didn't get the PN from the seal.  I did this a while back.

You had a visit from the karma fairy disco! Great pics.

Yes, thank you! Can anybody else help this man out with some karma? That looks much easier to do than I thought. I had a oil spot show up in my garage and couldn't find out where it came from. I looked under my truck and nothing, looked under the quad and nothing. So I continued to get the quad ready and moving it around and such and kept finding oil spots all over. I thought if I had a leak it would have been leaking down onto the skid plate and dripping from there. So I stood it on it's ass and looked all over and nothing. After I put it down found another spot. I ended up finding it leaking from the sprocket over to where the rev limiter use to be, on that little rod sticking out and dripping through the 1x2 hole in the skid for oil changes. It was leaking just slow enough I didn't see the oil build up on that little prong when checking the drain plug. I thought I was going crazy. I also took off a piece of the case where the chain guard screws into it from a bad chain. I bought a case saver and screwed it into the one place I still could and haven't had any problems. So I'm still kinda worried it might be a crack that I didn't see.  I haven't moved the case saver or sprocket yet so hopefully it's just this seal and not a crack.

   Karma!  Thanks everybody.

I know this isn't a sprocket and chain topic but I figure as long as you are replacing the seal, why not?

I advise spending the extra dough on a quality chain.  The cheap chain I put on initially was adjusted before the ride and by the end of the day it had stretched enough that when it skipped over the sprocket, it bunched up and took out the chain guard.  I wasn't too pleased with myself after that.

Current chain is still going strong and has stretched very little.

+1 on chain.  I had a cheapo on the 660, it worked fine but I was adjusting it constantly.
