GPS map updates?

My wife's GPS came up with a message telling her the map was out of date. So I looked into downloading an updated map...$70 from Garmin. Download or DVD.
Just wondering if anyone else here has had this experience. $70 seemed a bit steep to me. I have no trouble paying it, just checking to see if there are other options out there.

Her model is Garmin Street pilot c340

Does it still work? out of date could just be a few minor changes and no big deal.
