Unless they changed it for the 08's, ford doesn't offer 3.83's...they are 3.73's.  Thats what I'm running in my truck (2004 F-250 6.0 diesel crew cab 6' bed with 38" tires) and I can still pull 20+mpg on the highway if I stay under 70.  But as far as gearing goes...it all depends on the speed you want to run.  If you want to run 70+ down the highway, then 4.30's will have your RPM's screaming and you mileage will be bad.  If you keep it around 55mph, you will still get good mileage and it will help out while towing a big load.  If you want to run a little quicker, 3.73's are good.

The DPF on the 08's is what is killing the mileage, if you get rid of that...you can expect much better mileage.  Also, if you do something like a SCT tuner, or a Spartan, you can get better mileage plus a ton more power.  But you would want to get some gauges to go with the tuner to keep the EGT's and everything in check.
+1 on the tuner, i good one should get you increased mpg along with more power :grin_nod:

I have been with the AF for 30 years as a civilian, started when I was 18, it has been a great place to work.  Bought me a lot of toys over the years.

+1  To ditch the DPF, you have to get a tuner or the computer will throw you into "Regen" mode all the time.  If you really want to tow the big fiver, get the 450.  You will be happier while towing for sure.  My '05 F350 with 3.73 gears is not all that great of a tow rig even with my little toy hauler.  I get 9-10 mpg on the highway.  So if I could still get that mileage with 4.10 gears and have the extra power for the long hills and such, I'd go for it.  The new tuner I got from Elite Diesel helped, but still not what I expected for power or mileage.
