YZ450F clutch
« on: August 02, 2009, 07:42:22 PM »
Hey guys,
I have been looking for a clutch kit for my Raptor. I think I found some good info for guys who are looking to replace their clutch at a low price. I asked preddy08 if his Tusk kit for the Raptor came with the full or half size plate and it came with the half size. He told me it was holding just fine in his build and I'm sure it is. I'm sure it would hold just fine in my build but I like the idea of all full size plates in the clutch. I think all the after market clutch kits for the 700 and YFZ comes with the half plate. I wanted to try a Tusk kit because of the price and the guys that run that kit like it, but did not want the half plate. So I started looking around.

This is what I have found so far, the 07 and newer YZ450f has the same clutch as the 06 and newer Raptor. Only difference is the YZ clutch has the full size plate not the half size plate found in the YFZ and 700r.  So I'm thinking any after market kit for a 07 and newer YZ450f will work in the Raptor and have all full size plate. Rocky Mountain ATV has the Tusk clutch kit for the 07-09 YZ450f for $40 and I'm sure TQS could get them also. Now this is exactly what I was looking for!

Then I found that we can also use the 9 plate clutch from the 03-06 YZ450f. The 03-04 YZ has a different part # on the springs but the same plates as the 05-06 YZ.
03-06 YZF uses the same fiber plate as the YFZ/700r but uses skinner steel plates so we can get one more fiber and steel plate in the mix.

The part #'s for 03-06 YZ 9 plate set up.
03-06 YZ450f fiber plates 5TA-16321-00-00 =9
03-06 YZ450F steel plates 5JG-16325-00-00 =8

The part #'s for 07-09 8 plate set up.
YZ/YFZ/700r fiber plates 5TA-16321-00-00 =8
YZ/YFZ/700r steel plates 4X7-16325-00-00 =7

Case cover gasket for the Raptor is # 1S3-15462-00-00

I have had no experience with a 9 plate clutch. There is a few guys that are running the 9 plate set up on the YFZ boards and love it. They say they will never go back to a 8 plate clutch. What is the scoop on the 9 plate clutch, anyone running this set up? I'm thinking about ordering a Tusk 9 plate kit for a 06 YZ450F and some HD clutch springs to try in my Raptor. Any thoughts on this is appreciated. Thank you DL700, preddy08 and Steve at TQS for the help!
