new to the atv world need question answered

I live in Colorado and just bought a 01 raptor 660. I have been reading on upgrades and found lots of info on jetting and air cleaners. I just looked at mine and found that it has a K&N air filter but no pre filter Do I need to rush out and get one. I am an old jeep off road guy so I know  K&N filters. I also want to know what jetting to use for our altitude and if anything works.

Last at this time what is a good muffler out there to use. Can I buy one and not need the jetting. The guy I bought it from took one off it and put on his new Raptor he bought. said it opens the quad up real nice.

any info at this time would be great.

i dont no much about jetting, bu the most common exhausts on here are LTE, looney tuned, dmc, barkers and monsters but i dont know if they make those for the 660. also you dont HAVE to have the prefilter, but it will help keep extra gunk out.

btw it sounds like we got the exact same quad. i got the 01 660 with a k&n. but i also got a wider axle and mines the black and white one. he did have the o1 660 blue one, but this one had the wider axle so it handles better, it  just had the clutch replaced and a tune up so for a couple hundred more i got this one.

WOW we do have the same raptor. The one I have is also the black and white one. I just tuned it up and it runs great. was running it the other day over some rough trail and it kicked me hard left into a tree. found that its a great work out.

Pro-circuit, HMF, and Yoshi make great systems for the 660.  Where you at in Colorado?  I'm in the springs.

I'll check and see what I had mine jetted at with stock internals, and also with piston and cam.  As far as pipes go, I bought a clearance White Bros. pipe from Motosport.com for dirt cheap and it hauled pretty good.  I'd go with at least a 12.5:1 piston and a stage 1 cam with a pipe and intake and it will run right with most decent bikes around here easily.

Jetting will depend on what mods you go with.  Do you have a stock replacement K&N or a clamp on kit with a billet adapter?  Are you running with the airbox lid on or off?  I strongly recommend getting a good jet kit, either the GYT-R or a DynoJet.  Both of these kits come with instructions for what jetting to start with based on your elevation and mods.

On the jetting, there is no single right answer. Everyone's mods and altitude is different and raptors are touchy so everyone will need to be running something different. Base your starting point off of what others in your area are running. Be sure to remember as you go up in altitude, you go down in jet sizes as thinner air means you need less fuel per air.

Mods: You should definitely get a good exhaust. For the 660s, Yoshimura, White Bros and Pro-Circuit make the best mid-range singles. The highest performance singles are made by CT Racing or Sparks. If you want dual exhaust, Barkers and LTE are your only options. LTE has "in frame" midpipes, whereas the Barkers are outside the frame. If you plan on modding the motor at all, don't bother with a single exhaust. You'll get more out of the duals and they look and sound really good. Another thing to consider when breaking into the motor is that if you do a larger stroke and bore, you'll most likely want bigger carbs. If you are going to get bigger carbs, the LTEs won't work and your only option will be Barkers.

Monster now makes a set of in-frame duals for the 660 that clear bigger carbs.  And the newer LTE's clear FCR39's with the right mid-pipes.  And FMF and HMF both make good singles for mid-range performance.

I still think the yoshi is the best bang for the buck single system, FMF and HMF are great too.  I prefer the HMF over the FMF just because I had some durability issues with an FMF pipe I had but I picked it up used.  Both the FMF and HMF provide a little more low and midrange power when compared to the yoshi but the yosh is a good compromise b/w top and and midrange IMO.  I really liked my CT exhaust and I'd recommend it to anyone and sparks is great too, albiet a little loud.  Problem with those is that they're quite expensive and it's only a little bith more to get a set of duals.

I'd love to see some numbers on the monster inframes but I'm optimistic that they at least are on par with the LTE's so far as power goes.  If I had the cash and some dyno numbers to say the monsters outperformed my barkers I'd be very tempted...but then again for the cost of a new set of pipes you can get a stroker crank :)

I just installed a set of the inframe dual monsters on my rappy.  I love the sound and there is definetly more power there.  If I had a dyno around me I would get it ran just to see what kinda power I was making with just the big 3. The monsters will clear FCR 39's too.  So they should be a pipe that would last for a long time with different builds.

I also used the FMF jet kit(made by dynojet) and a K&N filter.
