Title: Alkire's Practice Bike................In The Works
Post by: preddy08 on October 20, 2011, 09:31:59 PM
First off I'd like to thank Chris for trusting me with his new practice bike.

I got the bike Wednesday and on first impressions its a little rough!!!! Pretty much every bearing and bushing is shot. It has some good parts to get a good XC bike going. With a little love it will be a stong runner that should be able to hold its own on any XC course. I did Gunny's bike and thought it turned out great, but this one is with in my realm of XC riding and will have some time to get some seat time on it. I'm really pretty excited to do a XC build. I plan on taking it out for a couple of rides to see how the bike does, then totally take it down and hang some good parts on it. Chris expressed some intrest in doing a motor build on this one. I'm going to get on the horn to see what everyone thinks a good XC motor should be. I think a good port, a mega cycle cam, single exhaust, MAYBE a FCI intake. I'd really like to build a motor that will mellow in the low end, but will scream on the top when needed. My first build of a 105 bore venom 14.1 piston, x-2 cam, Bo's tack head, FCI, single exhaust, and stock stroke. I thought it was PERFECT for the trails and owned everyone in the open fields.

I plan on keeping it simple, hanging the right parts, keeping the weight down, to make a good bike that Chris can hop on and beat on for years!

Few pictues of what I have to work with.

So what's coming off of that and being replaced? Other than the obvious wear and tear items

I've given Preddy a free pass to do whatever he thinks is right to this one. I only gave him an idea of what I want and let him go with it. So far it's kind of like he is reading my mind. Bo Port, X-cam. I'm liking it all so far. Shawn knows whats up.

Plastics were already going to be sold the second I bought the thing. Nerfs, suspension, grab bar, steering stem, wheels, a-arms, seat, handlebars FC, intake, exhaust, stock head, etc etc etc.......all gone in due time.

I'm lovin this!

I love that piece. Similar to the BRAAP TEC piece that they are still working on. They don't think they make it for the 700 though. I know the 450 sprocket guards fit the 700, but I don't know if that will.

There's this one, made for the 700, almost identical. http://www.lsracing.com/yamaha-raptor-700-stainless-steel-skid-plate-yamaha-raptor-700.309.13.atv-utv-racing

So what's wrong with the stock rear skid again? It's light, doesn't hang low, and takes a beating
Title: Re: Alkire's Practice Bike................In The Works
Post by: funyun on November 01, 2011, 07:32:35 AM
It takes a beating along with your rotor and sprockets
Title: Re: Alkire's Practice Bike................In The Works
Post by: Spartan on November 01, 2011, 07:38:59 AM
It takes the impact away from the rotor and sprockets...if you bend a plastic skid, you can bend it back easy on the trails. Bend an aluminum skid and you're kinda fucked.
Title: Re: Alkire's Practice Bike................In The Works
Post by: Alkire193 on November 01, 2011, 10:13:55 AM
There is no plastic rear skid out there. I still like the Blingstar rotor guard and LSR outer sprocket guard for simplicity. Check them out on HSDRacing.com

Ya thats not going to happen, if you actually get some speed and hit a rock that flimsy plastic skid is as good as nothing there at all. If you are at a slow cruise it might help though.

Run taller tires and you won't have a problem  Don't most XC guys run like a 23/22 anyways?
Title: Re: Alkire's Practice Bike................In The Works
Post by: funyun on November 01, 2011, 01:47:47 PM
I dont think anyone runs 23/22, but either way your going to hit some rocks.
Title: Re: Alkire's Practice Bike................In The Works

23/22 = :puke:

Raptors look so bad like that.  Look like a 350, or a blaster... And those tires vibrate like a SOB at high speed
Title: Re: Alkire's Practice Bike................In The Works
Post by: Alkire193 on November 01, 2011, 04:31:24 PM
20/22. It will add height but the rear linkage, rotor and sprocket all need protection. But some races more than others. Snowshoe and Mountain Ridge will be the races to add the protection. But the things I will never need is aluminum frame guards, coolant tank guard and a-arm guards, those are just added weight. swinger, sprocket and belly guard are good enough

and that's 20" rear 22" front for your folks that were in the middle of creating a post to ask if I meant to set my quad up like a dragster.

Again, sorry for the delay. My life has finally settled down.

Made a bit of progress on the bike tonight. Thought I'd chronical the "fails" along the way

Few pics of what I've found.

Well.....that sucks.

If it's damaged, replace it entirely. Already have the radiators (PRM and Fluidyne) with Kev so the stocker is scrap. If im seeing this right, that's water intrusion on the thumb throttle? no bueno :( Good thing it was getting changed anyway

I can order a whole new harness and frame, just say the word. No electrical or duct tape repairs on this thing.

Its getting a new axle anyway, but that doesn't make me smile. AND you were riding it that way! Haha

Thanks for the pics Shawn!

What does Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation have to do with it?

I'm sure Shawn doesn't want to deal with RE either so that would be out anyways if he is taking care of the motor work also. So how about Barker? They can get the same kind of parts and do good work as any of them

Ok, I think I have the motor hammered out. This is what I'm thinking. Chris, if you have anythoughts please chime in.

105 bore 10.75 CP piston.
Cylinder bored, and sleeved by Bo and cut down to get you back to about 11.1ish. (Still pump gas friendly)
Bo's megladon head.
50/50 cam that will be about -3 degrees to spread out the power.
Bottom end completely gone though. Can add a +5HR for almost nothing.

I can do a FCI kit with a box and double and tripple check that the mounting is 100% solid. Or do a CFM air box, of stick with a adapter style intake. Up to you.

Exahust, is still up in the air. Leaning twards a sparks, but would like to see what Monster is up to.

Also, Chris. If your board (and I know your are) please feel free to start buying any parts you want and have them shipped to my house. I'm about to that point were I can start hanging parts. The bottem end is hanging in the the frame with one loose bolt and the swing arm is just hangin there waiting for me to take it off.

Also, if you see a bumper for another type of quad that you really like I can make a custom mount to fit it.

Shawn has been busy

What do you mean "bottom end completely gone"? Like, the crank is toast? If we +5 the crank then we are talking 771. I loved my 771 in the trails, but do you really want to go that high? We can also just send the OEM to Falicon and have them do some nastiness to it. Maybe lighten it and replace the bearings. New Falicon rod and a cryo treatment or something  like that depending on what their say is on it.

Lets do an OEM airbox with an EHS airbox lid. Does anyone make an aluminum intake hose that feeds into the OEM aribox?

Monsters new single exhaust is great. Lets do it!

If we are extending the stock swinger +1 or +2, that needs to be shipped off.

Please ask Bo to ring the cylinder, it just prevents the all to common HG issues everyone experiences. CP piston sounds great. Pump gas OK. Lets order the x-2 and the 50/50 and compare on a dyno. id like to see which has the power delivery for this build.

Shawn has been bouncing from Elka to Fox to Elka to Fox. I think we settled at Elka Stage 5's because $1000 more for Factory Shox wasn't worth it. Whatever he decides ill order them up

Those will be good for dry conditions. I already wanted the front quadcross tires, so id have to say yes. What about Holeshot HD's in dry conditions?

Semi-muddy ~ RAZR rears with RAZR 2 fronts

Mud ~ GBC afterburns (or similar) and RAZR 2's

Did you get a chance to talk to Kenz about the throttle body?

Kenneth can probably get us a Blue Houser stem, but its going to have to be built from scratch. The black ones are drop ship.

you remove the set screws before you thread it onto the axle, and there's a groove at the end of the threads that the set screw bites into.

Wheel hub nut wise, I haven't really seen any alternatives other than what comes on the aftermarket axles. that's what the hitch pin is for...

Do you want to do some fancy pro bolt stuff or just the TUSK kits? If just the TUSK, ill order them after you respond to this.

What about the twin row carrier? Are you going to punch out the bearings or do you want me to just pick up a new carrier? Those bearings must be shot by now.

I'll also send a 34T honda rear today

Would you believe that lump of parts is gonna F***in FLY!?

I am so envious of your Shawn! That is the sexiest trailer loading ramp I have ever laid eyes on  :nana:

Looks like starting with a clean slate. Anything you need, anything at all, I'll get it on the way. ANY little thing that doesn't measure up i'd be glad to get it new and fresh.

Im going to contact Houser about whether or not their kits come with those parts. Did Jason order the a-arms WITH tric trac? That might determine if I will get new hardware with the arms.

Still need the following:

Block off
Case saver
brake line clamps
grab bar shipped to my buddy Ryan for fabrication
Tether kill switch

Just ordered (in addition to everything else that is still coming in) :

+2" clutch and throttle cables (ATV Galaxy)
Braided Rear Brake cable ATV Galaxy

Love it Preddy, thanks for the photos!

Houser sends everything with their arms except the main bolts that go through the frame ( one long ass and two short lower). Hope that helps Chris. I just went with Slicast and not Tric Trac, hear you have to replace Tric Trac setup quite often.

They are all Tool Steel. It's a racer package. Each sprocket is different to modify gearing based on conditions. I think I got 13-15 and 36-38. I'll have to double check. If they don't fit i'll have to contact them because they were made to order.  Aside from the Frisbee and Christmas CD, that's what comes with every Krause Racing order. I love my cheap lil Krause keychain!

Also, those rears are for a Honda sprocket hub, that's why the bolt holes are countersunk.

Update!!

According to sources (Preddy), the suspension has been worked on by Wiigy and is en route to Nebraska. PC'ing will start once all components arrive as we are awaiting some stragglers; Seat, intake, exhaust....to name a few. TB goes out this week or next to be bored to +3 for easier starting and the fact that WK's 54 tends to fall off for a lot of people.

Everything is looking up! Pictures coming soon as  the suspension arrives.

Well if he fiddles with it enough, it will definately cycle between hard & soft. Best he don't tie a string around it unless he really wants it to go black!

Preddy is afraid to go into his garage due to excessive stank from the homosexual orgy last week. The KY got all over the quad and parts then the heat baked it on so he is waiting for it to cool so he can get the man jam and KY off all my stuff and continue working.  :nana:

No blue accents? Remember we have quite a bit of blue PCing.

If you can trade the red for blue that would be pretty sweet. Right no it doesn't tie together

I'm just going to through this out there, if you don’t like it, just send it right back....

Keep those graphics as is, red uppers arms, blue front hiper rings, and red rears ???

Once you through in a third semi dominant color, it gets hard to coordinate.

I'm just thinking out loud...

Think away. I agree with you 100% I was trying to offset the overload of blue plastics, nerfs, bars, rings, stem and give it some more gunmetal with a dash of red to tie in the ELKA suspension that has red anodized pieces on it. I'd have to see a side shot of the quad with the suspension to render it properly. I am feeling your blue and red rings thing. It isnt too late to ask Mike to toss out the red and give it some Yama-blue either.

I was thinking of not using it because it will block the gunmetal, trimming it up to cover only the under thigh portion behind the fuel tank and leaving the area heading down to the sprocket just frame

Well, as predicted, I have my 3 plugger running, including making my own in-frame duals, & yours is still a large collection of bits!
Come on, lets get this puppy mobile!

A-Arms, I made my own.
Made my own mounting for a CCP Steering damper
Duals, made em,
etc,etc.

& I work 60+ hours per week, & am away from home for 3-4 weeks at a time for work (will work out at 8+ months total for this year away)

I'm not superman mind you (I'll leave wearing the underpants over the trousers to Aaron) but my point is that if you set your mind to it, you can achieve a lot, even given limited time & resources

Well, I prefer my Axis Pro-Air front end more, especially as I built it myself!

Anyway, I have a new challenge for you.
Can you get this bike completed before I get my Yamma-Gamma hybrid built?
This is an RG500 (square 4 2 stroke gp replica motor) that will make 110hp approx
into a YFZ450 chassis.
I still have to:
- fully strip & rebuild the motor
- fabricate the 4 expansion chambers
- fabricate engine mounts
- assemble engine & chassis, & then lobsterback the expansion chambers to fit onto the bike
- make air intakes
- custom nerf bars
- etc

You have a huge headstart, this should be a fair contest. I aim to be running at christmas!

GNCC turbo kit, before rule changes, etc. Then it was a beefy 727 build. I might still go 727, stock bore with a +1 head and a +3 tb. Im just talking cause I haven't really thought about it. But the Pro Armor box is likely my nerfs, the rest is...well....the rest. Motor is coming soon, he had to break it down and ship the pieces one at a time for it.

There should be some studs, a PC5 or two and some Fluidyne radiators in there. Those are the key items I wanted to get to Shawn's house.

Chris, you sir have managed to fill up a 1700 sq ft garage!

I've opened a few boxes and its they're full of SHIT! Just random raptor parts. If you dont mind I'm gonna head to lowes and buy some big ass totes and get some of this shit sorted out.

On a side note the UPS guy that droped the stuff certinly had fun. He took one pallet of shit in the garage and  saw what was going on with the raptors and the mustang and struck up a conversation. He didnt leave for 20 minutes

I'm afraid to open some of the boxes. I roll some of them over and I hear nothing but loose nuts and bolts rattleing around  :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:

Also, when I droped the last batch of parts at the PC'er the owner told me about some guy that droped some other parts off  that there was some guy that build ATV's out of his garuage and does some really nice work. We figured it out to be me 8) Some how the word around town is getting around Omaha :woot:

FYI the poly skids that TAG makes are the SHIT!!!!! I went to Arkansas this last weekend and beat the ole raptor on some extreemly rocky trails and it held up very well! The trail management people built tons of berms across the trails to slow people down. They ended up being jumps. I would jump 4'ish feet off them and bottom out on some 1-2' rocks and thought this skid would be TRASHED! I got home sunday and checked it out and it held up PERFECT!

Yeah, but its Omaha, so, there's that......

Did you also tell them that the atv garage build has been going on for a year? I am sure that will be great for business

Sorry for all of the random parts, I had no idea what to expect. To be honest, the crank, the piston, the head, the radiators, the studs, the nerfs and the PC5 is my focus because they are all brand new parts, fresh in the boxes. Everything else was scrap when I was riding it at LS. Enjoy hell!

Frame was trash before LS. Twisted really bad and too many re-welds. I agreed to let that go to scrap. The motor is coming, in pieces, so it will take awhile. Everything on the old one is pretty much not worth having, but it is good for spare parts.

Sorry about the packaging, I told Kev you needed some nuts and he just went with it

So, whats the plans for the radiator? I have two Spal junk ass fans here. I'd MUCH rather use a OEM unit.

Same with the clutch. I have two slingshot clutches and I'd MUCH rather use a OEM with stiffer springs. I'll have about 10ish more HP than you and I'm still rocking springs and no type of lock up. I FLAT OUT dont like the idea of the slingshot. If you want it I'll do it, but me and several others suggest against it at your HP level.

Do you have the alternate radiator? Should be a used PRM and a new FLuidyne there. FLuidyne would be fine. OEM fan is fine. SPrings on the clutch vs the slingshots is fine

i am so happy somebody else has decided to try the GPR3 stabilizer with the remote.  I am sure you will be as happy with it as i am (even tho shawna will say that it was nothing but a huge PITA!)  one thing i found when i went to the remote was that by time i installed remote, clutch lever and grips, i didnt have any room for the stock control cluster (starter/headlights).  i added a fly starter switch and was able to run the longer grip (130mm iirc).  I happen to have a pingel dual button slimline switch for your starter button and acessory (nos or maybe a horn  ) ( http://pingelonline.com/slimline_controls.htm ) that i want to sell that would look pretty good on those bars, its chrome, anodizing it may be an option if you wanted to change colors.  Another thing that you may want to look into is the Renthal Intelilever with the hot start like i have.  I liked the feel of the renthal, and you can use the hot start for the reverse button, just buy the Dr D cable for it.  Then you can move the key to the reverse lever location.  if this is going to be an mx bike, id imagine you will want a handle bar setup free of clutter.

I had GPR on my previous build. It really is great to adjust dampening on the fly. Sometimes the knob can get a bit stiff, but once the damper warms up its easy to adjust.

I hate to tell ya this but its either the GPR OR Fluidyne

I've spent all weekend on this thing and cant get it to work. I think the radiator mounting is different enough to make not work.

I spoke with Kami two weeks ago and he gave his best pointers. IMO its not gonna work. It rubs pretty bad on the radiator mounted like I have it. Flip it the other way and its even worse.

What exactly is hitting the radiator?

The pivot arm on the base of the GPR cannot be uninstalled and flipped to the other side?

What exactly is hitting the radiator?

The way pictured the connecting rod rubs the lower radiator hose and brake line. Also when turned all the way to the right it hits the lower frame rail. I think its hitting the frame rail because I had to mount the connecting arm upside down to even come close to clearing the raidator hose.

If I flip the puck to the other side then actual puck hits the lower radiator "neck".

Kinda hard to put into words, I can get a little video tomorrow.

First off, let me say that this was a masterpiece of cinematography. I laughed, I cried, I really wanted the quad to come together at the end, but I understand the need for drama. The audience needs to keep wanting.

Second, where can I buy the soundtrack for this movie?

Third:

We have three options:

1) keep it with the stocker (where is the fun in that?)

2) remove the rad hose lower tube, weld in a cover, bore another hole on further right, or much further left and try again

3) shift the radiator up using strips of metal for the left and right attachment points and thread the lower alignment "peg", screw on a spacer, bolt, peg of some sort so it can sit up higher but still be in the hole and the rad hose will be up out of the way. Then comes the million dollar question.....how will the plastics fit?

ooo.....I have a "4"

4) plumb around the problem. we are using the stock rad hose, we could try creating a frankenstein hose that goes under or over the stab/ brake line area altogether. Use a union, an S-shaped metal tube or hose that will come off the radiator and go up, then attache the stocker to that. Ill do some absolutely horrible sketches for you today.

One more thing, is there any way to flip the control arm? The one attached directly to the puck. If you can get that to the opposite side without having to flip the entire puck you have something to work with

I circled the arm I am talking about in this photo. Leave the puck where it is and flip this arm so it comes out the backside, see what happens.

The block has to be that tall to match the angle of the steering stem :(

the height shouldn't matter, as long as the puck keeps the angle it has.. It would still match the stem.

I thought alos your other suggestion of moving the radiator tube on the actual radiator, but I wonder if you'd lose some cooling properties if you move it.

ooo.....I have a "4"

4) plumb around the problem. we are using the stock rad hose, we could try creating a frankenstein hose that goes under or over the stab/ brake line area altogether. Use a union, an S-shaped metal tube or hose that will come off the radiator and go up, then attache the stocker to that. Ill do some absolutely horrible sketches for you today.

I think you already know my answers here. Every time you modify anything to the extent of cutting/welding or using unions and rerouting line you open up a big window for failure.

I dont think moving the radiator up will work either. If I remember right people using larger radiators already have issues mounting the plastic. Moving it will amplify the problem.

Tonight I'll try flipping the arm to the other side. Just looking at it it should work, but I think I'll have to dismantle the puck to move the arm. I'll give it a shot.

Few progress pictures. I got the GPR all mounted up. I had to make a trip to the hardware store because I didnt like the length of bolt. Stem clamp bolts were way too short. Maybe 4-6 threads catching.

Wiring harness starting to make its way home.

Rear axle in with the honda sprocket! 15 front and 34 rear.

Handle bar lines routed. Tons of crap up there

How aboooot the graphics? Kinda waiting on those to put them on in the living room. Cold graphics/plastic = no bueno.

Also, the ASV kit you got was for a 2006 MC. This bike has the 2008+. I have the old one on there right now.

What did you want to do about lights? The bike didnt come with any.

We'll need a kill switch and a light switch. Not sure if anyone makes something like that.

Reuse the old brake block off?

Ill order a new brake block off. What is "MC"? Can you point out a kit that will fit better? I think stockers with no bulbs will be just fine. Thing looks funny without lights IMO. Kill switch has to be a tether kill switch, that can mount on the bar clamp. The light switch won't be necessary

Whats your thoughts on the main battery? and IMO the 24v system is a waste of time with a lower compression motor. Even on my bike it will start on the first or second revolution.

Also LiPO batteries can be a TOTAL pain, usless they are maintained EXACTLY per the manufactures instructions. GT Thunder says it a good idea for you to buy their 250 dollar charger to maintain proper voltage to the LiPo

Do they even make Lipo batterys for atvs? $250 charger? Whats wrong with the ballistic type batterys? I still got mine 8 cell ebay one, holds a charge like a boss doesn't drain when it sits forever and only cost me just under $100 with quick connectors.

forget the 24v, a 12v 8-cell ballistic or antigravity is fine, that way it can charge as I race

Graphics looks great, can't wait to see them on the new plastics! so sexy!

You did send a (2) 4 cells batteries but I've always seen the 4 cell wired up in parallel with a standard battery. Never saw two packs together with out a standard battery.

Did you get the 8-cell ballistic battery? If I bought two 4-cells then there has to be a special trickle charger from the stator to they don't overheat. They have to be charged slowly.

It's the CCA I was focused on when I purchased them. The CCA was much higher on the ballistics than the lead batteries, lighter too.

Got the MSD mounted up and wiring sorted out. The MSD is a VERY nice piece!!! really clean compaired to the PCV and Dyna! Just mount the CDI in the tool tray and be done with it!

I am just fucking around. I jumped on the band wagon to give preddy a hard time, nothing more. I am sure if Chris wasn't happy with the time frame he would be saying something. The bike looks good and is coming together really well though. If Preddy had a time frame of when Chris wanted it back I wouldn't doubt he would get it done.

Finally worked up the nerve to work on the bike Saturday night. Thought I'd toss on the exhaust and chain, nice simple hour or two of work. NOOOOOO!!! Sparks changed their design a little and its just enough to screw me. Header hit the oil tank by a good 1/4". Take it back off, shim & shave the tank. Up to a whopping 1/8" clearance now  :woot:

Broke the chain to length, got the masterlink put in and for some stupid reason the carrier doesnt like to rotate in the swingarm. I threw some tools, drank a beer and said FERK it for the night!!!

I'm sorry its taking this long, but everything I put on here is screwing me 9 ways from Sunday.

Hope to start putting my 727 back together this weekend.
Finally got shot of the crap that has been going on since the crank broke.
Bet my quad runs before this one!

Actually that should really scare you.
I will have done 2 builds in less time than it has taken to build this quad, & mine is probably faster.
Oh, & I have made good progress on another quad I'm building as well.

& I'm hardly ever here to work on it.....................

Sorry Shawn. They were supposed to be full fender decals so the blue was just a highlight. Maybe something was lost in translation. Decals never look good until the finished product. I love it!  Check out that SPARKS pipe, I am gonna f*** that thing up!!

Clear 2-pot is the way to go to protect the decals.
I add plasticiser (same as if I was painting the plastics) as it makes the clear very tough & chip resistant

Sorry, the quad made 65/56 on the dynomite dyno. Runs great on pump gas with no hiccups. The suspension is soft for the MX track I rode, but it was smooth off each jump. The torque is unreal! There was a sand MX track that got me right back into the rhythm.

Needs a little bit of work, OEM parts and minor stuff but it is a runner for sure!

Title: Re: Alkire's Practice Bike................In The Works
Post by: Alkire193 on August 29, 2013, 03:19:47 PM
770cc

5050 cam
FCI intake
CS XX6 exhaust
105 CP piston 11:1
+5mm HR crank
Velohead "Bo port" Stage 2
OEM clutch w/ HD springs

Does a great job, but the MSD Blaster was waaaaaaayyyyyy off according to the tuner. It idles perfect, and power takes off at 4500

keep in mind its a dynomite dyno, they read very low. I'd say 12-18% low

it must read WAY low..

my stock bore, stock stroke YFZ 700r made 67HP with a Barker stage 2 head, and 10.5:1 piston (No MSD, just PC5)
way more TQ than mine if I remember right though!
