I have an 03 rappy 660 jetted, bored, high compression piston but have a small problem. It is running ok but seems to be burning some oil and there is some fuel in the oil tank. What do I do?
-
start with a compression test, follow up with a leakdown test, and you may end up finding it's time to replace the piston rings.
-
 compression test
-
Okay so low compression... what's next? Get top end re done?
yeah bummer youll need new piston rings, hopefully not a new piston too :(...but have a look at the cylinder and the valves.
this is the point where many people would say:
f**k it, lets build it bigger and better. Higher compression piston, bigger bore etc...
-
wont know til you're in there. BUt bad rings is usually the culprit for low compression.
-
How low was the compression?

& Peelz is an expert on "bad rings"
-
It was 165psi
I assume then that you disabled the stock decompression mechanism? About 182 is the expected psi for a disabled decomp, 130 or so if the decomp is left alone.

You think that oil coudve got in the oil from a 2 hour car drive without turning the gas off? Or a bad spark plug? Or even sitting for about 3-4months?
-
Gas you mean? You could get gas in the oil if your floats are stuck or your needle valves are bad and your bowl drain tubes are clogged. After setting for that long you should have changed the oil before you ran it anyway. I suggest you change the oil, run a few extra quarts through to flush it, and then refill with a new filter. Run it for a bit and see if the issue returns. I'd also clean those carbs well after setting that long.
-
Yeah sorry I did mean gas. And I am getting new oil filter, spark plug, and changing the oil on Wednesday and will let you know if it returns
-
Drain the gas tank too
-
How do you get the spark plug out?
-
like any other spark plug. pull off boot, remove by turning counter clockwise.
need a deep socket.
-
they make specific sockets for spark plugs, the inside has a rubber boot so you don't crack the ceramic.
-
I put in new oil, oil filter, spark plug and gas. Took it for a spin. It would run full power for 2 seconds then no power on and off. I came back to my house and it had fuel in the oil AGAIN. This is really making me mad. The rites of spring is in a few weeks and I wanna go. Someone help please
-
float stuck open? was there alot of smoke when it ran?
-
Not a whole lot of smoke. Just the first revs. It seemed to get quite hot for a 1/2 mile drive
-
Do you think I need to clean my carb?
-
Guess I don't know what type of compression test you did, because when I do them the fitting for the compression tester goes where the spark plug is.

Yes, I do think you should clean the carbs.
-
Thanks man. Should they get new needles? When I gun it, it bogs down and backfires.

+1 hmmmmmm
I agree. clean carbs first. nah on the needles, just clean em really good. Unless you open it up, and they are all grungy
.
-
Well... now the engines not even running
-
Got engine running. It runs okay but if your at idle and gun it, it bogs down and backfires. If u ease it up its not bad
-
Parking Brake and Reverse rev limiter check time.
-
I would seriously try running some Seafoam through it. Pour the right amount in the gas tank and go hammer on it. I'm almost certain it will clear its self out.
I've told three people at work to try this and it worked for everyone of them.
Has the bike been sitting for a while?

+1 parking brake sensor unplug that sucka. follow the wire from the left handlebar down to behind left headlight. youll find the plug there. easy one to check.
-
just unplug it?
-
Sorry for the many dumb questions and excessive posts... anyway thanks to all of you my raptoe is running strong. But one last question, is it normal for the exhaust pipes to glow orange after a little but of driving? Again, thanks
-
Aftermarket pipes are typically made with thinner walled material than the stock pipes, and glowing is not uncommon when left at idle for a time or riding slowly.
But you could probably use some more fuel on the bottom, try richening up the fuel screws.
-
just unplug it?
yep. But if you are going to leave it unplugged, I suggest sealing it somehow. As water/mud may splash into the connector and short out, causing it retard timing. All that sensor does is keep you from revving the motor with brake on.
