Title: How to modify your Raptor on a budget......stock to 6 mod graphs inside
Post by: KBR on August 18, 2008, 04:28:45 PM
This is meant to help the new or experienced 700R owner spend the least amount of cash on performance and get the largest bang for their buck. This is all work that can be performed by a backyard mechanic with some basic skills and tools. We have spent enormous amounts of time and money testing all this stuff out in an attempt to make Raptors faster for less dollars. We pride ourselves in being fastest for cheapest!

This first graph is for a completely stock 700R vs a 3 mod 700R.
3 mods being:
Ron Wood Exhaust
Dynatek Fuel Controller
Pro Design Intake (the original and best, all the rest are copies of Pro Design).

This is a "good" 700R. This one showed about 5% more power bone stock than most I have tested, and since I am not the guy who shows bs dyno graphs or inflates the numbers by showing a low baseline, drags the brake, or runs it with low tires, I wanted to use the best stock graph I had to show the gains. This bike is a "Wednesday Bike" for sure. Most baresly crack 40 if they even do.

Its easy for people to forget about the power under the curve and look at the peak numbers. I use a "scoring" system for my dyno work. What I do is I take the horsepower or torque at every 500 rpms, and and take that value and divide it by how many 500rpm readings there are in the run. it gives me an "Average HP or TQ gain per 500 RPM"

I will attach a Excel Spread sheet I created to show the differences of all these builds at the bottom of this post.

The Average HP gain per 500 RPM from stock to 3 mod is 8
The Averate TQ gain per 500 RPM is 8.57

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next is a Big 5 700R compared to the 3 Mod 700R
Big 5 meaning:
Ron Wood Pipe
Dynatek Fuel Controller
Prodesign Intake
Dynatek Ignition (non programmable)
Hot Cam Stage 3
Again I have figured out the average hp and tq gains per 500 RPM. This is where it gets fun, since the power levels at 7500 on a stock cammed and stock ignition 700r is zero.
Average HP per 500 RPM 16.6
Average TQ per 500 RPM 10

Next is Stock to Big 5.
Big Five consists of:
Ron Wood Pipe
Dynatek Fuel Controller
Prodesign Intake
Dynatek Ignition (non programmable)
Hot Cam Stage 3
Again here the average HP and TQ numbers are crazy since we are now making power beyond 7500 RPM.
Average HP gain per 500 RPM = 22.2
Average TQ gain per 500 RPM = 16

Next is 3 mod to Super 6
Super 6 consists of:
Ron Wood Pipe
Dynatek Fuel Controller
Prodesign Intake
Dynatek Ignition (non programmable)
Hot Cam Stage 3
KDS Bored Throttle Body (46mm)
Again we are making power above 7500 RPM.
This is the only run (the super 6) that is not the exact same bike as the rest. Its almost identical and the numbers all add up so I am calling it legit.
Average HP gain per 500 RPM = 17.7
Average TQ gain per 500 RPM = 11.3

Next is Big 5 to Super 6
So basically the addition of a bored throttle body.
Average HP per 500 RPM = 1.1
Average TQ per 500 RPM = 1.3

Last but not least is boner stock to Super 6.
This shows almost limit for the 700R with out cracking the head bolts.
The reason I say almost is that we are testing KDS crankcase valve and if it goes as planned we hope to see a over 60 HP on this build.
Next week I will be testing a "Super 6" with Barkers instead of Ron Wood to show that difference.
The cost of doing the "Super 6" is less than $1,375.00.
You can not beat that combo period.
I have tuned quite a few 700R with engine work that do not come close to these numbers (not our engine work of course...lol).
Average HP gain per 500 RPM = 23.3
Average TQ gain per 500 RPM = 17.3

We did not get much more than this with the Barker equipped machine.
We did however break 60 and 46 with a DMC equipped 6 mod Raptor.
Thanks for looking!

Kam,
Thanks for the write up.  I am one of KBR's Super 6.   But I have one thing that is different on mine. (Not for the better).  I am running the GYTR intake and I will say this.   It is coming off just as soon as Kam and Marty get done testing on the intake situation.  When they decide what is best for this setup, that is what I am going to buy.  I will have a GYTR set up for sale soon..   I ended up with just below 58 HP and 45 TQ.   We are thinking that the new intake will let it push the 60 HP mark..
I would recommend this setup for anyone that dont want to break the bank on mods.   Its less than $70 per HP gain.   Not to shabby.
Thanks again Kam and Marty for all your time and effort.

Nice write up!

How easy is a cam install?  I'm sure I could manage, but how many hours for the beginner to complete?

Less than $1400 for the Super 6 sounds like a pretty good deal.  And I do need some performance mods.

On a related note, I'm going to call it the "Sick 6".  I think it sounds cooler!

My mods are FCI with box
                   DMC Fource 4's
                   PC5
                   HotCams Stage 3
                   Dynatek from DL700

So I got a 5 mod quad? What do y'all think my hp is there's no Dyno with in 5 hrs so never been. And after piston p and p tb bore it'll be a 8 mod quad?

My guess is you'd be pushing @ or around mid-upper 40's.

bump up the compression and you can get yourself into the mid 50's easy.

Damn that's it,lol. I thought 37 from factory. My next mods when I crack head bolts is a P&P,tech 11.5:1 piston, and maybe a +3 TB idk if I need I'm keeping stock bore stroke.  Don't know if I should just add better springs vale float scares me don't think I need bigger valves since it's not a full drag quad.

MAAAAAYBE Looooow 50's but I honestly think that'd be pushing it.

With a port and polish / Piston / TB  she'll really wake up.

It's a lot stronger than when I first got it now. It's just a trail quad so after the mods to come I'm done. May move to DL700's HDD5050 cam thinking may stay hc3 I'm keeping stock swinger and wheel base so don't wanna go to strong.

I Have a 6mod Rappy and from what the results ive seen have been mid to upper 50's and ive heard of a few hitting 60hp but i'd set my expectations at around 55hp anything more for bolt on parts would be a bonus  My mods barker duals,+2 tb,hc3,cfm intake, dynatek prog. and pcV and ive noticed a big diffrence in power on my hillclimbs and higher rpms

So when I get the head job I should get TB bored? Then I'd have a seven mod bike right? My big 3 + cam + piston + dynatek + TB bore = 7 or am I counting wrong

Definetly let that thing breath +3 tb all the way and you will pick up some hp by changing cams when you do the head. I did all that i could before going into the motor. Next is the head, piston and better cam for me

That's how I was doing it that's why I got the HC3 it was a true slide in no rocker mods. But when head comes off it'll be DL's HDD5050 or is that to strong for a 90/10 trail/drag quad. Or should I stay HC3

I would say the HDD5050 cam will be fine for trail riding.I have the RJ cam which is very similiar to the HDD and i do all trail riding and roads and it great.I also have the big3 with BO's updated track P&P,CP11:1 piston,+3TB  :) Thats all on a stock swingarm

The 5050 cam is probably the best option better power from the bottom to redline over the hc3 but the hc3 puts out good numbers too check out Dl's dyno test under the post $600 upgrade from 4 mod 8)

this dyno looks like the kinda power you get from duals in the higher rpms...

do you think its more from the Dynatek Ignition or cam...

i have the big 3 now (full muzzy exhaust, velocity intake and pc5/autotune) i want to do a high compression piston and bigger cam but not for a while.. but i don't mind getting a Dynatek Ignition  thing if you think i will gain alot in the over rev like that dyno shows...
