Ok, I'm replacing my Razor 2's up front, and realized something. The treads on the tiresd can be mounted to either turn in or turn out while going forward. In the pic below (from Maxxis) You will notice that if this tire is rolling forward, the side treads are facing outward

When i was flipping through a dirtwheels magazine i noticed an ad for Bill Balance endorsing Maxxis Razors. In the picture of him racing the treads are facing towards the center line, but then the picture of him standing by his quad towards the bottom of the ad has the treads facing towards the outer section of the wheel.
Which is the correct way?
I would say if it muddy, you want them pointing out, as to clean out the treads as they spin.
Dryer cond. Face them in for more grab. This is layman's advice though.
My thought would be that the front ttracks straighter with the side treads aimed towards the center. Which is the way I had it before...but now that i saw that ad, I'm second guessing. My guess would also be that if the treads pointed towards the outside this wold help with steering quicker...but then why would Balance have them pointing in during a XC race in the ad....things that make you go hmmmmmm.....
Treads facing in definitely. Just imagine turning the bars, that piece of tread will be exactly paralell to the ground its pushing against. If that makes any sence
So you're saying that the picture of the tire above should be rolling away from you to be correct?

Yes
I would mount them that way anyways. Truer tracking in a straight line.....
Thats what i thought too....I think Mr Balance needs to have a chat with his people that set up that Maxxiz ad for him to do, and stuck his tires on backwards!
I wonder if Bill or Maxxis even noticed their intern works fast with mistakes

I doubt it was a mistake. Tire direction is feel, style, and terrain based.

So it may have been intentional ???

I'm not seeing the benefit of having the tread face outwards Colorado
Wish I had some to Maxxis tires to test

Looks logical, and riders choice rarely cross paths.
just keep the front end up and you will not have to worry about it ;)

that is my strategy. The only reason I can see to change is between Mud and hard pack. For front, don't think it matters much, though. other than to "clean out" the treads

I'd be surprised if Maxxis really put that much R&D into their tires, that if you just flip them around the are miracuosly made for mud, and if you flip them again they are great for hard packed. I think I might call Maxxis and find out their take on how they should be mounted. I'm hoping that they say it should only be one way , so then I can let them know that their million dollar man has them on backwards in their Ad...hahahah

Maybe you should ask them if there's advantages for certain riding types having it flipped one way or another as well. :)
Ok...I just got off the phone with a tech at Maxxis...and he said that they were actually designed to have the treads pointing in. This helps with keeping it tracking better and not wandering when going through ruts.
He also mentioned that some people prefer to run them with the treads popinting out if the conditions are softer or muddier. Running it this way will cause the tires to track more in ruts and throw up a little more mud, but will help in quicker steering also
Hope this helps people
Also...Balance runs them both ways depending on the situation...sounds a little .... :fruity: to me...but to each their own..hahaha
Well you can't really argue with a guy who has been the only GNCC champion since the turn of the century :grin_nod:

You got lucky :loser: hahaha
haha  Only figured out by accident. Buddy mounted his 23" razr2 that way by mistake. Threw mud everywhere. Switched and it was better. Not a huge difference in handling.

Good to know
Ok, just wanted to add a little something to this. I put on the new razr2's and noticed that there was a Rotation arrow on the tires...and get this...it made the treads point towards the outside when following the rotation direction....go figure ???
 That's interesting
Never noticed that one ???
