Title: Yet another money pit!
Post by: preddy08 on March 24, 2012, 07:11:36 PM
Just picked up a slightly used Jato 3.3 the other day for 250. I knew RC stuff would nickle and dime you to death but good GERD!! The day I bought it I took it home did a lap up the street and headed back. Went the other way and turned around/cookied it. Mid turn it hit some gravel then pavement and launched it right into a light pole ripping off the front right a-arms, turn buckles, and drag link. 50 bucks later I got it running again. Went out with a buddy and went through glow plugs like its going out of style. 8 bucks a pop. The next day I went out again and had a pretty decent day, crashed a couple of times but not to bad. Came home for a little clean up and found a broke rear shock mount, broke antenna, fried spur gear. It never ends! I've spent about 250 bucks on this thing since I got it a week ago! I guess I did get some tires and other misc shit too, but GERD damn. If this keeps up momma's gonna get pissed!

I bought a T-Maxx and started to spend a bunch of money on it.  Sold it before I got too deep into it.

I got a Venom Creeper instead.  Hard to break stuff at 3 mph.  :)

bad plan Peels..
stay away from Nitro...
not a good kids toy..
constant tuning and messing with it all the time..
Traxxas is making some great electric stuff now
goes faster than Nitro and much more fun...
look in to the Traxxas brushless stuff, very impressive and cost effective
some of them are now doing over 100 mph right off the shelf

what is battery life like vs being able to carry fuel out to the park with us and play (theoretically forever)?

Lookin for 4x4. and Have to be able to play with them in the snow. Not necessarily into speed for the kids, just fast enough to jump stuff.

and purchase price for each, is it comparable?

I am really interested.

some of the new Batteries are amazing!
the new LiPO Batteries are lasting 30-60 minutes no problem
and the electronics are waterproof (like drive it under water!)

love the new slash!!
and the 4x4 slash is CRAZY!!

go to the local Hobby shop and ask them about the new products

you will hate nitro

yeah I was thinking I would hate it a little less than electric. I was only looking at it like my boys could learn about engines and have a good time at the same time...

But I am rethinking...

and...we have no local hobby shop :(

If I had the money to drop on a new car it would be a brushless system. From what I've read its alot less hassle. Gas and glow plugs get really expensive. You can burn 15 bucks of fuel in one day if it runs long enough.

It is really fun playing with the motor, but starters going out, having to keep your starter wand charged, its just a big hassle. It would be nice to have a couple LiPo batterys and swap them out when you need to.

meh, as long as they can go fast in grass and dirt, and go off some sweet jumps...and last for more than 5 minutes without breaking or running out of juice... I want one. lol

not really picky here. just something fun to do with the kids, outside the house.

How high of grass are you planning on running in?  Short grass isn't a problem but anything longer will be harder to push through.  I have a Tamiya Dark Impact using NiMh batteries and regular brushed motor and grass is pretty hard on it.  It's pretty slow in general.  Kind of got bored with it.  Brushless is where it's at.

Not mine btw, but this what I got.  I bet that Revo will run circles around it.

Just trying to prepair you for the worst. I know I got one of the fastest truck out there and I had a HUGE learning curve. Please do keep in mind everytime I take this thing out I have a TOTAL BLAST! Its simply one of the best ways to get out with some friends and have a good ole time! If I would of bought a Tmax with a 2.5 engine I would not be having all these issues. This truck is so fast and combine that with my agressive nature it equals a recipe for disaster  Totally worth all the hassle.

Crystal's uncles little boy are begging for me to take them out to a park and drive their cars. I'm thinking this week I'll pick them up and head to a park. I showed them the car today and they were litterly jumping up and down begging for me to go faster. They have some cheaper electric cars, I hope their uncle wont be pissed cause they're gonna want some big nitro cars.

No rings on that piston.  Those 2 strokes (IIRC) have tapered bores.  Basically zero tolerance at TDC.  I've never seen a split rod before, ever.  Bent and broken, sure.

I think well be getting electric 4wd...

got my wife on board too.... Then, if the kids really get into it, I can get higher power batteries, make em quicker. Then if they REALLY REALLY get into it, well get some nitro cars. If i get those right now, it would be ME working on them all the time, and kids playing lol

I am wondering if I can limit the speed on them though....maybe on the transmitter? Keep the kids from destroying them on day one.

yes, you can limit most of the new Traxxas models
its called training mode, it limits the speed to around 50%
one thing you have wrong...
you will not step down to nitro after electric, slower and more work and more money... bad move
Title: Re: Yet another money pit!

I was going to post earlier but my computer crashed.

Pretty sure you could jury rig a throttle stop on the transmitter if it doesn't already have an electronic limiter built it.

Can't you put low milliamp NiMh batteries in till they get the hang of it?  Not sure it that limits only runtime or speed/power as well.  I wouldn't even bother with NiCd if you even have the option.

You DO own a helmet cam right?

Electric isn't always the right choice. It has its place just like nitro.

I prefer my nitro in the sand. Electric for everything else.

I have an ERCM modded Picco28 in an FLM LCG Chassis, great setup for nitro.
I like the Savage Flux for electric.

thanks for the replies guys. Love how preddy's showoff thread turned into my own personal RC forum

HEffer: not looking at nitro as step up. Looking at it as boys learning gas engines. WHich in my book is a good skillto have as a grownup, and to have fun doing it. Also....more run time, as far as never having to recharge. just fill the tank and go.
Pretty sure Ill go electric. They've come a LONG way since I was into this. Late 80's, early 90's lol RC10's were the big thing. I remember only 1 4x4 buggy back then. name started with a Y and was blue. Batteries sucked....

DIsco: yeah you can get batteries with different MaH ratings....looked into that too.

Geo: No sand anywhere nearby. :(

yes.. I am good for that

for the most part mAH translates into run time, not speed. lower amp hours, less run time
http://www.fusionteq.com/html/battery_101_-_the_basics.html

one thing that seems to be taking off is actual Gas powered RC (not nitro)
something worth looking into
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jgpd3lsF9Aw

but honestly Peels, I would think a couple cheap go karts would be more fun and much more educational
do your kids really need to learn 2 stroke nitro-methane engines?

Geo is right on..
Nitro is awesome in the sand!
but electric is no slouch either!

side note:
I was watching x01 videos on youtube
that thing flat out hauls ass!
search traxxas x01

just playing the other side...

I like Nitro, I really do...
but with the technology in Batteries lately, Nitro RC is dying
plus there is mess and Nitro fuel is expensive (the last quart I bought was 15 bucks)

my recommendation...

get 3 Traxxas Slash Ford Raptor editions
they come in a few colors, so you caold all have your own color
I thin the Raptor only comes in 2wd....
but if you stay out of deep grass, 2wd is good enough
the 4x4 is insane... it will rip thru anything!

For your kids at least, as Hefe said, you can't beat Traxxas electric stuff. http://traxxas.com/ (http://traxxas.com/)  Waterproof, come with a halfway decent battery and charger(stupid slow though), brushed or brushless that can be turned down to 50% with the push of a button. Bought my stepson the original 2wd slash 3 years ago, he is still literally beating on it. Till I upgraded it to brushless, and took him to the track, didn't break anything but the body, and what did break was cheap and easy to fix. Preddy if you haven't heard of them, RPM http://www.rpmrcproducts.com/core.htm (http://www.rpmrcproducts.com/core.htm) makes great replacement parts wtih a lifetime guarantee. I have one with a 2.5 in it and that's plenty fast. I also have a 2wd Stampede, Slash 4x4, Revo 3.3, and an original nitro Rustler that I bought new in 97, and it's still running, and all original except the front arms and shocks due to an incident like your last.

getting away from the nitro?

I dont mind nito so much but my buddy has had terrible luck with them. More than likely due to lack of tuning and the forever dirty air filter. My nitro's alway ran like a top, but the brushless systems are flat out NUTS! This truck weighs 12lbs and will do a standing backflip on 4s. I can go up to 6s and get 2/3rds more power but that will be totally useless! Will do a mid throttle wheelie no problem what so ever.

Electric is so simple! charge and go. I've got a stock pile of 6 batteries which will lasts well past when I get bored.

I'm not shitting you, the Savage is hands down the tuffest truck out there. My old boss came out to see the new truck in action and about shat his pants when he say 20' (high) backflip jumps onto flat land and driving away.

that depends on what your doin? The savage is a freeking beast. VERY durable and crazy fast. Awesome to goof off with.

By Traxas 4x4 do you mean the slash or my Jato (not a 4x4)?

the slash is what I meant. I would just mess around with it not trying to race or anything just something to bring outside and mess around with for an hour or two.

You sir are in luck!!!! I'm actually looking to get rid of both my R/C's if your interested. Its been fun, but I just dont have the time to do it anymore.

Hands down the Savage is a better goof off truck. The slash is better if you have a nice groomed surface. I have my Savage setup now to be a little more sportier.

Well the surface by the house is pretty "groomed" it's a gravel driveway and an asphalt street. the grass isn't long either... how much are you looking to sell your savage for?
